Contractor

I was let go yesterday, was told that my contract will not be renewed. I know others who were also affected and I know some employees are being let go too. It's been though for a long time and I was afraid this will happen but now there is no more uncertainty but there is no more paycheck too. Husband is also unemployed right now and with two kids it will be hard to go through the holiday season as I am sure nobody is hiring before January. Good luck to all and I hope this madness stops with me.

Blaming AI is a copout

How AI became the scapegoat for the current wave of mass layoffs

Labor experts reveal the truth behind AI job disruption, and why companies are so willing to cite AI as the excuse for slashing jobs.

Is it always like this?

I joined Verizon two years ago right out of college, and I can’t remember a single stretch of time when layoffs weren’t hanging over everyone’s head. Was it always like this in the past, or is this just how things are now? Is it the same everywhere? Is this what I have to look forward to for the rest of my working life?

Show your next employer no more loyalty than they show you

The days of mutual respect and loyalty between management and staff at IBM are long past. IBM’s one-time core principle of trust and personal responsibility in all relationships no longer applies to its executive ranks (nor do the IBM Business Conduct Guidelines.) Don’t overly invest in your career because it’s guaranteed that your employer at most makes extremely short-term investments in you.

Know that your 1st or 2nd line manager may have been coerced to sign a justification for laying you off written by higher ups and certify it as their own assessment. The documented decision making process and paper trail scrupulously follow the law. The actual decision process is a different matter. IBM’s no longer squeaky clean in this century; it just presents the outward appearance of being so.

In IBM even band 10 and band D employees are disposable interchangeable parts now. The situation has become similar at other major tech employers. Show your next employer no more loyalty than they show you. Beware of loyalty to your local team. Big businesses get a free piggyback ride from that loyalty to your local team. They count on it!

Even if you’re the best in your country or geo, they can always find 2 or 3 lesser talents in a far cheaper developing country to replace you. They won’t think twice before doing so … even to someone who walks on water.

Exyte Layoffs

200 folks were recently laid off in Boise. Severance was OK. Not good time to lose job in Idaho, now you'll have 200 people chasing 2 open job positions. I am kidding, but really not, I am exaggerating, but really I am not.

Heads up: NVWs are next

If you’re still classified as a virtual worker, you’re in the crosshairs. Notices are starting to go out that NVWs will be required to “follow the work” and RTO full-time in Dallas, Atlanta, or New Jersey depending on org. My source says the plan is to eliminate all remaining virtual roles before year-end with any remaining to move and RTO by June 2026 or terminate.

Don’t assume you’re safe, they’ve already pushed out some of the best and most experienced people here. Titles and “essential” status won’t save anyone. This is your warning since the company won’t give you one.

Global Workforce Strategy Manager

ExxonMobil has a person who specifically works with functions to help identify opportunity areas (GBC, MSP) and develop execution plan. So there you have it, a chief leading a team whose sole job is to find opportunities to ship out your jobs. The company is looking out for its interest and so should we.

Contract service manager R.I.F

The district manager told my boss (area manager) that he is going to have to cut 1/4 of the 1st level managers. Does anyone know if this is true? I recently switched from a local manager in construction because I thought contractor services would be safer and I wouldn't have to deal with OPT's. Now I am worried because at least before I had people that reported directly to me. Has anyone heard anything concrete? I'm seriously considering volunteering because I cannot handle the stress. My new job is so much better than when I had to babysit union OPT's but I'm afraid I made the wrong move going to "supervising" contractors.

For those that have been through this before - how do they typically decide who to lay off?

I have never been through a massive layoff before. For those that have been through this before - is there specific criteria that they typically use? Is it always the lowest performers? Do they target people that have been with the company a long time and are making a higher salary? I am not new to my department, but they moved me to a different team within my department with the first wave of VSP last year (which I wasn't happy about). While I am definitely not considered a low performer, I am however the least experienced on my team with the particular work that we do. As we get closer to the November 20th date, I am starting to really worry that I will be selected.

Over 1 million layoffs in a year

Layoffs in the United States exceeded 1 million in a single year during several periods, notably during the following years leading to a recession, except for 2020 due to Covid. US companies see the storm coming next year and are preparing for it by tightening the belt.

  1. 2001: The dot-com bubble burst and a subsequent recession led to significant layoffs, with over 1 million jobs lost.
  2. 2008: The financial crisis resulted in widespread layoffs as the economy entered a deep recession. Job losses exceeded 1 million during this year.
  3. 2020: The COVID-19 pandemic triggered mass layoffs, with more than 20 million jobs lost in the early months.
  4. 2025: October marked the 1 million mark and the year is not even over.

Were some people asked to re-interview for their own positions in the last round?

An acquaintance said he was asked to interview for his own position, but he already had something lined up and refused. He was one of the lucky ones who actually wanted to be cut. But is this something that happens? I don’t understand the point of it. I don’t see why he’d lie to me, but I honestly can’t figure out why they’d do that.

worst job market

The economy is worse than it was in 2009, and there are very few jobs available in the market. Yet, the current administration does not send H-1B workers back or prioritize American citizens in hiring decisions. President Obama handled the 2009 recession more effectively; he ensured that H-1B workers remained in India by denying visa approvals.

Take severance or apply for different positions

I was informed last week that my job was impacted by the layoffs and offered a severance package. Another job came up in the company I could apply for. It is a step down but I’d keep my benefits. Not sure if I should take the severance and run or try for the position…. Any feedback?

What should I do in this situation?

I have an offer in hand (been in the interview process for 3 months now, casually applying and interviewing) and they're asking me to accept the offer by TODAY. The pay isn't that great (not a lot than what I'm making now) but the role is quite interesting.
I am a top performer in my team. Should I take my chances and stay in Verizon? Or do I accept the offer? I DO prefer Verizon but I'm also skpectical about my future here. What would you do?

Integration Lemmings working hard to layoff themselves

Integration meetings between HPE and Juniper are in full steam and it is interesting to see the human psyche there. All lemmings working day and night, knowing that as soon as integration is complete, they will the first one to be let go. Toiling hard to eventually ki-l their own jobs!

Agentic AI has a 98-99.5% failure rate.

Agentic AI has a 98-99.5% failure rate.

But business leaders are still pretending (lying) AI is taking peoples jobs.

https://arxiv.org/html/2510.26787v1

The best-performing current AI agents achieve an automation rate of 2.5%, failing to complete most projects at a level that would be accepted as commissioned work in a realistic freelancing environment. This demonstrates that despite rapid progress on knowledge and reasoning benchmarks, contemporary AI systems are far from capable of autonomously performing the diverse demands of remote labor.

The race to offshore America!

Job offshoring in the country is gaining momentum at an unprecedented pace. Major companies are making headlines that show it’s no longer confined to lower-level positions — middle and upper management roles are now being transferred to India as well. A striking irony: those who once designed and championed the offshoring strategy may soon find themselves among its casualties. (Some may feel gleeful at that thought.)

How do you stop it? A lot would need to change, but one thing is certain, the leadership that implements this will go down in history as saving society.

Swimming pool

Q is like swimming pool. There is an implicit honor system in a large company that people should behave professionally and with integrity and respect for each other. Instead, at Q, everyone, especially the shameful middle managers and VPs, just sh!t in the pool every chance they get. It's disgraceful. They'll do anything for a buck and job security. People who stick around get what they deserve. Its one big cessp00l.

Is there talk of shutting down the Ravinia office in Atlanta?

I have this feeling I’m not long for my current position anymore if that happens. I work under John Blanchards org and we just had a layoff in August. I think I’m being paranoid but since Srini is taking over soon… I just don’t know. The market is brutal now and I’m job hugging like a motherf----r, I’m not ready to leave yet.

Has any C-Level exec ever been to the Atlanta office?
