Thread regarding Cargill layoffs

Take severance or apply for different positions

I was informed last week that my job was impacted by the layoffs and offered a severance package. Another job came up in the company I could apply for. It is a step down but I’d keep my benefits. Not sure if I should take the severance and run or try for the position…. Any feedback?

A bird in the hand is worth 2 in the bush. There is no gte you will get that other job, I mean isn't it odd that they haven't suggested it to you? I hate that Cargill just wants to nix people without trying to place them in other roles first.

Anyway, if you apply for the inhouse job, do it AFTER you accept the severance OR ask them can you be given time to apply, interview for the other job BEFORE you have to sign for the severance

My assumption is they will tell you to go kick rocks....

No Job, no severance you may as well go live in your car...

If you have an offer outside get it and cash severance. If not, check if 3 months consideration period still valid, like in EU. But it depends on how looks the package and what’s your level. Market isn’t good, be ready for minimum 6months to get something lateral, up to 1year. I would stay if have something inside, the severance will be there in next waves.

I'm not sure exactly how it works, but if you are going to consider the other job, you need to be very sure that if you do not get it, you still get your severance package.

And also that you know exactly what youd be getting into - my understanding from someone is that if they offer you that role and you turn it down, you have given up severance eligibility.

Same situation. Applying and looking for something long term while still working at Cargill. I would rather have a good long term job lined up than severance but the severance would be a nice thing to fall back on if needed.

I was in the same situation in December last year, best decision for me was taking severance. I took a few months off to reflect and decide about my future. In the meantime I found a new job which I enjoy . Staying just because of benefits will not make you happy long term. There are much better companies than Cargill. Especially since we have those new leaders without vision.

The job market is really tough so unless you have a good cushion of savings and severance I would look at any opportunities to hold you over while looking for something more long term on the outside.
