Education Department wipes out special ed office in shutdown layoffs

The U.S. Department of Education fired nearly everyone in the Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services in a wave of new layoffs that began Friday, according to the union representing the agency's employees.

I was laid off in March

I was laid off on March 5th of this year. At the skip-level meeting, my Director and HR said I could apply for any position within six months. Once I hit the six-month mark, I applied for three jobs and was rejected for all of them. Is it possible that HR lied, even though the layoff document clearly states I can reapply to any position after six months? I am afraid that my manager blocked me from getting rehired. How can I find out? Because if she did, I want to sue. I can not trust that woman, she smiles in your face and stabs you in the back.

Whatever happened to the mid-October layoffs rumor?

If it turns out to be true, that means we’re sc--wed this coming week. I really hope the part about only managers being affected is accurate. But given the current state of affairs, and all those inspiring news headlines, I’m afraid it may end up hitting everyone. However, the only reason I’d be upset about losing this job is because there’s literally nothing out there to fall back on.

Layoff details from media

Its Thursday, Oct. 9, announcement indicated that most of the cuts will occur at the company’s New York offices but that there also will be layoffs at its offices in Des Moines; Birmingham, Alabama; Chicago; Stamford, Connecticut; Seattle; and Los Angeles. Some employees who work remotely also will be let go.

The company did not disclose how many would be cut at each location, including Des Moines, and a layoff notice had not been posted on the Iowa Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification, or WARN, site as of Thursday morning.

It’s a new era

It has taken awhile to get my mind around this, but the old model of Optum being able to hire a set of onshore engineers or analysts and throw millions at that is permanently over. Wall Street no longer trusts UNH, and for a long time despite very opaque reports on how money was made we plowed through with various revenue claims that any normal company would have been called out on. That’s over-no more moving money from UNH to Optum and calling it revenue, no more selling off groups then buying them back, no more projects that may be profitable someday. There are no more games to play. If a group isn’t profitable now, there’s zero chance it’s going to be added to, and will probably be cut. Bonuses are going to go towards zero, whatever was left of the country club is going away. If you hear you will hire more people someday, don’t count on it. The layers of managers who spend days building PowerPoint for other managers are next for the cut-if you’re not delivering to bottom line, find a way to.

Colonial Pipeline to Cut Jobs after Brookfield Takover, Sources Say

The scope of the job cuts could not be learned immediately. Colonial Pipeline declined to say how many jobs would be cut.

The changes come just months after New York-based asset manager Brookfield Infrastructure Partners Colonial in a deal valued at about $9 billion, becoming the first sole owner of the over 5,500-mile pipeline network since its construction in the 1960s.

Spirit bankruptcy funding approved, but what happens to us now?

I work at Spirit and I don’t know what to think anymore. The company just got court approval for $475 million in financing to keep things running during bankruptcy, but everyone here knows what that really means. Chapter 11 sounds like a plan to reorganize, but for the people doing the day-to-day work, it usually means job cuts, unpaid overtime, and endless waiting for answers that never come.

Management keeps saying operations will continue as normal, but that's not helping morale. Some teams are already being told to cut spending and delay projects, and everyone’s whispering about more potential furloughs. I’ve seen this kind of thing before in other airlines, and it always starts with a few quiet layoffs before the bigger rounds hit. I really hope they handle this the right way, but most of us are just bracing ourselves and hoping to survive the next few months.

Expect cuts, especially in corporate

Lowe’s has completed its $8.8 billion acquisition of Foundation Building Materials, a leading distributor of interior building products such as hardware, drywall, insulation, ceiling systems, etc., for residential and commercial professionals.

Siena College layoffs

Siena is apparently facing financial problems. They are offering early retirement to employees and the physical plant workers are being replaced by a firm to do that job. They just built a new building that was supposed to be paid by a huge gift. Did that gift ever come in? Would hate to see it got the way of Saint Roae.

Helix - Update Your Resumes

Not trying to sound alarmist, but after the recent RIF, it’s fair to say things feel uncertain right now. Seeing cuts happen after H1 is definitely out of the ordinary, and if performance targets don’t hit the mark, this could become a pattern. Even if that’s not the case, April isn’t as far away as it seems.

The reality is that nobody ever thinks it’ll happen to them until it does. Staying ready — keeping your resume and LinkedIn current — is just smart practice. It’s not about doom and gloom; it’s about being prepared in case the winds shift again.

Burnout isn’t a badge of honor

Younger folks, seriously, don’t fall into the trap of doing two people’s jobs because the company refuses to hire enough staff. Work at your normal pace, take your breaks, and use your time off. If they keep cutting people, they’ll eventually realize they have no one left to fire.

I don't mind layoffs

If the new CEO decides to actually get rid of the real fat, and we all know there’s plenty of it here, that’ll be one move I’ll applaud. You know exactly who I’m talking about, the unnecessary layers of management, the slackers who do nothing but stay protected because they’re tight with someone a few levels up, and so on.

TCS accused of hiding 8,000 layoffs

Adding fuel to the fire, the Nascent Information Technology Employees Senate (NITES) has accused TCS of not being transparent about the scale of the layoffs. In a statement cited by PTI, NITES said, “This is not a minor difference. Nearly 8,000 employees, more than what TCS admitted, have disappeared from the rolls… It points to a deliberate attempt to downplay the scale of retrenchments and mislead regulators, policymakers, and the public.”

New ceo new contract settlement new changes new layoffs

I’m hearing rumors the first thing the new ceo did was to see about a contract extension. But not in way most would like .Sounds like in exchange for some kinda cap on medical the union would agree to the movement of work force needed to bring the people to the work along with cross training for techs .Which means less hiring of new union field techs .This also plays in the company favor because they can also move ahead with the management headcount reductions this new ceo is looking for with layoffs .Not really sure if anyone on either side union and management realizes what this new ceo is looking to do reduce headcount at any cost .Not sure anyone is safe

Don't think you're safe

Please don’t get lulled into a false sense of security thinking this is over. The sad fact is that we no longer have job security. It doesn’t matter how long any of us have been here or how much value we bring every day. All that matters is that they want to keep cutting costs, and if the numbers fit, you’re gone.

Because this will end well for sure...

Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. moved one step closer to his goal of dismantling the nation’s premier public-health agency by dismissing more than 1,000 scientists, doctors and public health officials from the Department of Health and Human Services late Friday night.

Hiring

With all the layoffs, why is there hiring happening? I’m not even talking about hiring cheaper folks abroad, but right here. How do layoffs and hiring at the same time make even a lick of sense? Inquiring minds want to know.

LA office to close

I heard from an AVP and SVP that T is exiting out of the LA buildings by early next year. It seems with the DirecTV sell off being completed, the company has no need to maintain office space or further operations there.

Anyone else located in LA hear anything? Are they being laid off and offered severance or told to relocate to Dallas first before that becomes an option? Does it make sense to relocate to Dallas in such an event?

Upcoming US reorg is just another addition to the creative attrition box

The goal is to cut people or make them quit. Every tactic that pushes employees out is cheaper than paying them to leave. Exxon has turned into an intricate matrix of exploitation and attrition pressures coming from every direction. No wonder it’s now the king of toxicity. And it’s not as if the job is worth going through the wringer for. A couple of years and done seems like the only reasonable way to deal with this hellhole of a company.

A Sad State of Affairs

So... imagine a team that's been cut, cut, cut. In half. Down to the bone. There's a hiring freeze. Alas, the manager has an employee who's a poor performer but can't do anything because a) the person can't be replaced (hiring freeze) and b) a layoff is coming and there needs to be a lamb to go.

Meanwhile, those who remain must work even harder to accomplish their tasks. Otherwise, those in charge crack the whip and say, "Why can't you deliver 'on time' to the arbitrary delivery date we dreamed up?"

What's really messed up is the leadership that thinks this makes any sort of sense. Ultimately, at the rate this company is going, the train will run off the cliff and crash at the bottom of the canyon because the only ones that remain either don't care or don't know how to put on the brakes.
