Proposed cuts target teachers, school employees, librarians, media assistants...

The Long Beach Unified School District (LBUSD) is proposing layoffs impacting hundreds of its employees. Proposed cuts target teachers, school employees, librarians, media assistants, and various central office and site-level support roles. These actions are a response to an estimated $100 million budget deficit and a need to reduce expenses. The deficit is attributed to a 20% decline in student enrollment, reduced state and federal funding, and increased operating costs. Teachers and union members are actively protesting these potential layoffs, urging the district to consider alternative cuts.

Lay offs in Europe ?

It seems that there was a meeting yesterday between European Human Resources and the unions.
I imagine that the layoffs were discussed. Do you know if they have been announced in certain countries?
I haven't received any feedback in Austria.
Has anyone heard anything?

ConocoPhillips confirms up to 12.5% North Slope layoffs as workers seek union

ConocoPhillips has laid off 10 to 12.5% of its North Slope workforce, the company confirmed Tuesday, as employees at three oil fields move to form a union.

Two hundred forty-three ConocoPhillips employees at the Kuparuk, Alpine and Willow fields have petitioned the National Labor Relations Board to join United Steelworkers, citing recent staffing changes that organizers say threaten employee safety and reduced pay.

According to the organizers’ website a confidential organizing campaign has been underway for months.

Union for Technicians?

After thinking long on how I might convince any readers that this post is legit and that I wasn’t representing HR I concluded that I can’t - so I’ll just ask.

If you are a technician at F8, are you interested in joining a union (CWA to be specific)?

There are pros and cons that you should absolutely be aware of but the topic has come up several times at GF and its happening in some other key 24/7 firms in the state.

I don’t intend for this thread to become a running list of the cons presented by people who have no dog in the fight (non-technician employees) just seeking input from technicians that would be for or against this. Please do a little research prior to engaging, ensure you understand the whole union picture. Thanks!

Plan in the works to save hundreds of Algoma jobs, union says

Plans are in the works to save hundreds of the roughly 1,000 jobs slated to be lost at Algoma Steel Inc.

Bill Slater, president of United Steelworkers local 2724 that represents some of the affected employees, says as many as 500 people could be back at work by the end of next year.

Hoping JUST ONE SD/VP looks at the package and says “nah, I’m good” and goes full scorched earth

I swear, if even one of them — ideally some crypto-rich ba----d who’s already set for life — just quietly refuses the package, keeps vesting, and then unleashes he-l…Organizes the PSRs, starts a union drive, dumps every single Slack thread, every off-record call, every “alignment” deck, every real comp band doc, every actual burn numbers, every lie they told the board, every threat they made behind closed doors…Then spends the next three months or 3 years doing every single podcast that’ll have them — Bartlett, 20VC, Dwarkesh, Cerebral Valley, Piratul, the works — no fear, no filter, just pure napalm truth. Stock’s down $25+ before the first episode even drops. VCs panic-selling. Recruiting becomes radioactive. Customers start calling asking wtf is going on. All because one person decided the truth was worth more than another few million. I’m begging the universe: let there be one. Just one who doesn’t cash out and shut up. Please. Someone be that guy.

Call to avoid layoffs at Tufts

Concerned Tufts staff members have distributed a petition in conjunction with Tufts Labor Coalition demanding that no workers be laid off as part of Tufts’ Operating Model Transformation, an initiative restructuring the university’s administrative functions.

Inside / Outside Split. Is it all for show?

In FL, (IBEW) VZB techs are being split up between two different management chains. Inside and Outside. Management has spent the last 5 years trying to get us to perform ALL job tasks (without training or tools), and now they've done a complete 180. So far we have been divided up at random, and not given any information except for, "now you are an Inside tech" or "outside tech". In areas where there are only 1 or 2 techs covering a huge geographical area, how would that work? Tech's will have to turn away work because its not a responsibility of his manager? How does that better serve our customers? Who comes up with this cr-p? Who's going to work Fiber cuts if there are no Outside techs in the area? Who's going to work CCR builds if there's no Inside techs in that area? Throw it at the wall and see what sticks.

How does format work in other Union areas?

Rumor is the company will be declaring a surplus to IBEW in Jan. Not surprised.

mangers think it’s bad union associates think it’s terrible company will never recover so poorly run

So seeing all the disorganized reorganization going on in management.Wondering just what’s in store for us at the bottom of the pole .We are in a contract year yet have heard nothing more then there was no early agreement.I mean as I sit looking at the cost to live in northeast I realize that everyone is acting like we make so much but in reality just surviving!!Difference is we don’t get some huge golden parachute. The pension is peanuts m.Maybe it was worth something years ago currently with gatt rate it’s not worth more then few years salary if that .The company has already spent years sc rew I g Us .Now th y really wanna deal us the death blow .So anyone thinking this is just a management dilemma.Think Again. Were next .So stop kiss A$$ and start asking so what’s going on with our contract coming up

✊ Key Reasons for Tech Unionization
Tech workers are increasingly turning to collective action to address several core issues:
• Job Security and Layoffs: Despite being highly profitable, the tech industry is prone to volatile labor markets, resulting in large-scale and often sudden layoffs. Unions are sought after as a safeguard for fairness, transparency, and long-term stability in a capricious industry.
• Burnout and Work-Life Balance: The "move fast" ethos of many tech companies often leads to extended work hours and burnout. Workers are unionizing to advocate for better work-life balance and reasonable working hours, challenging exploitative work conditions.
• Wages, Benefits, and Transparency: While some tech salaries are high, the industry features significant pay disparities and occupational segregation (e.g., between core employees and contractors). Unions work to improve compensation, ensure equal pay for equal work, and establish open and fair processes for promotions and pay decisions.
• Ethical and Social Issues: Unlike traditional labor movements focused solely on working conditions, 21st-century tech unionization is often driven by a desire for a voice in company decisions regarding ethics and the societal impact of their technology, such as the use of AI in surveillance, military projects, or other contracts.
*
• Workplace Democracy and Accountability: Unions provide a mechanism for workers to democratize the workplace, giving them a meaningful say in decisions that affect their daily work, and holding management accountable for issues like discrimination, harassment, and lack of diversity.
• Impact of AI and Automation: As companies deploy increasingly sophisticated AI-enhanced technologies for monitoring, evaluating, and potentially displacing workers, unions are seen as a powerful tool to ensure workers are included in the design and implementation of AI to protect their job quality and rights.
📈 Changing Perceptions
The old narrative of the "pampered tech worker" is eroding, leading many, including mid-career engineers, to reevaluate unions not as a hindrance to innovation, but as a necessary tool to establish fairness, transparency, and a sustainable work environment. Tech workers are realizing that their collective power is necessary to secure their rights and ensure their expertise is used for equitable and beneficial purposes.

News Summary: Algoma Steel Layoffs (December 2025)

  • Title: Ontario-based Algoma Steel makes difficult decision to issue 1,000 layoff notices *
  • Description: Algoma Steel in Sault Ste Marie Ontario is issuing about 1,000 layoff notices after being hit by 50 percent U.S. steel tariffs. The company says the tariffs have fundamentally altered the competitive landscape and forced it to close its blast furnace and coke making operations in early 2026. Algoma is accelerating its transition to electric arc furnace steelmaking by a full year in order to remain viable. Federal and provincial governments have announced 500 million dollars in loan assistance to help the company navigate the tariffs and reorient its business. Union leaders and Ontario officials say the decision is devastating for workers and the community and are working on action centres, retraining and other supports ahead of the March 23 2026 layoff date.

  • Title: Algoma Steel to lay off more than 1,000 workers *
  • Description: Algoma Steel Group Inc is laying off more than a third of its workforce with some 1,050 layoff notices as it accelerates a transition away from blast furnace and coke oven operations. Union leaders say about 900 of the affected workers are members of USW Local 2251 and roughly 150 are salaried staff in Local 2724 and describe widespread anxiety as the notices arrive just before the holidays. The company has been pushed to move faster on its electric arc furnace project after 50 percent U.S. tariffs on Canadian steel effectively shut it out of its main export market and contributed to almost half a billion dollars in recent quarterly losses. Algoma plans to focus more on steel plate and other products for the Canadian market while relying on 500 million dollars in federal and provincial financing to get through the transition. The article places the layoffs in a broader context of global steel overcapacity noting similar restructuring and job cuts at German producer ThyssenKrupp Steel.

  • Title: Canadian steel company Algoma to lay off 40 per cent of workers, blames Trump tariffs *
  • Description: Algoma Steel Group says it will lay off about 1,000 workers or roughly 40 percent of its 2,500 person workforce and close its blast furnace in Sault Ste Marie in response to severe financial pressure from U.S. tariffs. The company is shutting its blast furnace and coke making operations in early 2026 as part of an accelerated shift to electric arc furnace steelmaking. Management cites 50 percent tariffs on Canadian steel for weak demand, a 13 percent drop in third quarter sales and nearly 90 million dollars in direct tariff costs. Ottawa and Ontario have together provided a 500 million dollar low interest loan through the Large Enterprise Tariff Loan program to help Algoma weather the trade war and complete its transition. Algoma says the restructuring is necessary to secure its long term future while acknowledging the heavy toll on employees and promising to work with governments and unions to support affected families.

  • Title: Algoma Steel to lay off 1,000 employees, blames Donald Trump's tariffs *
  • Description: Algoma Steel in Sault Ste Marie has issued 1,000 layoff notices just two weeks after securing 500 million dollars in combined federal and provincial financing. The company attributes the cuts and the closure of its blast furnace and coke making operations in early 2026 to its conversion to electric arc furnace steelmaking and to U.S. tariffs that have effectively closed off its largest market. About 40 percent of the 2,500 person workforce will be eliminated and the news immediately knocked almost 8 percent off Algoma Steel's share price. Union leaders say roughly 1,050 positions including both unionized and non unionized roles are being eliminated and warn that the community of roughly 78,000 residents cannot easily absorb such losses. The article notes that the layoffs come despite government aid and highlights ongoing struggles across Canadian manufacturing under Donald Trump tariffs and weaker steel demand.

  • Title: Algoma Steel issues 1,000 layoff notices, closing blast furnace and coke-making operations *
  • Description: Algoma Steel has sent 1,000 layoff notices effective March 23 2026 as part of an accelerated plan to fire up its electric arc furnace and shut down its blast furnace and coke making facilities. The company says 50 percent U.S. tariffs have effectively closed the American market to its steel and forced it to speed up its nearly one billion dollar transition to electric arc furnace production. Union presidents estimate the true number of affected employees at about 1,050 including salaried, hourly and non union staff and expect job losses across coke, iron, steelmaking and other departments. Local unions are reviewing bumping rights and working with partners to establish an action centre that will offer resume help, skills development and retraining while income security programs and possible severance options are detailed under collective agreements. The article also covers political reaction including Sault Ste Marie's mayor and local MP pushing federal and provincial governments for tariff relief, infrastructure projects like a new port and other economic supports to soften the blow to the community.

  • Title: Algoma layoffs shine a light on need for a deal with Trump: Shoemaker *
  • Description: Northern Ontario Business reports that more than 1,000 of Algoma Steel's roughly 2,516 positions will be furloughed by March 2026 and Sault Ste Marie mayor Matthew Shoemaker calls the cuts an obvious consequence of six months of 50 percent U.S. steel tariffs. Shoemaker argues that while Algoma always expected some job losses as it transitioned to electric arc furnace production the tariffs accelerated the timeline and show why Ottawa must urgently secure a tariff deal with Washington. He urges federal and provincial governments to turn existing plans into immediate orders for Canadian steel and to move ahead quickly on the proposed Port of Algoma multimodal project which could create construction and long term operational jobs. The mayor also calls for relocating more Ontario Lottery and Gaming jobs to Sault Ste Marie as a short term stabilizer and says city council will work to keep municipal tax increases low as residents face income uncertainty. He warns of wider ripple effects on social services, real estate and local businesses but emphasizes that the community will support affected workers as part of what he calls a big family in the Sault.

  • Title: Algoma Steel to lay off 1,000 workers over unprecedented tariffs *
  • Description: Global News reports that Algoma Steel plans to lay off about 1,000 workers in Sault Ste Marie because U.S. tariffs have fundamentally altered the market and sharply limited its access to the United States. The layoffs are tied to the closure of the company’s blast furnace and coke making operations as it adapts its plant and business model to a new reality. Algoma says the decision is necessary given extraordinary external market forces even though it recently completed a 500 million dollar government financing transaction meant to help it manage tariff impacts and pivot away from U.S. dependence. In the House of Commons Industry Minister Melanie Joly expressed sympathy for workers, pledged support for Algoma as it develops new products and markets and promised the government would fight for these jobs. Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre criticized the government response as empty promises that will not put food on the table for out of work steelworkers underscoring the political stakes of the layoffs.

DON'T BEND AN INCH

Go Colts and Hoosiers! Now that I have that out, time to get serious. REAL SERIOUS! iI was one that was going to try to tell our leaders to give and take because of our hard times. Not after reading these words! The insistence on not listening to what matters to us will help us not bend either in our contract talks. Hold firm union leaders and brothers and sisters.

What's stopping us from unionizing?

Kroger is nothing without technology. The technology we design, build, and maintain is the reason this company can operate and make money.

It has been made obvious to us that our feedback means nothing. I don't know if anyone remembers when we used that "Slido" tool for anonymous feedback and by far the largest concern was that we do not support RTO.

Leadership is laying off our co-workers because of their own mistakes, pushing current employees further and further, and actively lying to us about the reason for these unpopular changes.

Tech unions are legal, and have happened before. And right now it is obvious that many of us have common ground at the same time and for the same reasons.

What, realistically, is stopping us from doing something about this? If they won't listen to our feedback, why shouldn't we force them to listen to our demands?

Any NFO/VZB Techs Here?

Im in the vzt world. I was just wondering what you guys do? Do you work in a CO or in the field? Are you union or non union? What sort of thing does a vzb tech handle that a regular I&M or SST wouldn’t?

Excuse my ignorance, I’m relatively new and genuinely curious.

Bloomington Layoff

I first asked my supervisor here in Bloomington Minnesota and learned that on December 15th we shall be informed that our office is closing. Most of us are very happy to be laid off because we are all so done with this $chitt-hole place and are looking forward to the awesome termination package we get per our union contract. We get up to 2 years pay for those of us with over 31 years service. We're already celebrating! Sorry to the managers who only get a tiny fraction of what we union members get. Funny how we've all watched as all of our work, piece by piece, has become automated or off-shored - and we can only laugh about it.

Don’t Expect Me to Strike

Don’t expect me to strike for a contract that fu--s over new members at every turn. I will continue to work BAU. I couldn’t care less about retiree benefits. Meritocracy is the only fair system, seniority doesn’t mean sh-t to me. Take the package and enjoy your pension.

Good times

I’m just sitting here reminiscing about the past 37 years working for Nynex/NYTel, Bell Atlantic/Verizon. The union, while certainly far from perfect, got me enough to get married, buy a house and raise 4 kids into adults while allowing my wife to stay home and raise them. Did they blow it with the tiered compensation/benefits for new hires? Yup. Did they bone over retirees with crushing health insurance costs starting in January? Yup. Could they have done better with pensions and lump sums? Yup. Did they spend way too much time and effort defending slug members who should have been fired? Yup. But overall It’s been a good ride with a good group of coworkers. Not sure if I’m gonna bail before August or hang for a bit longer, but either way it’s gonna be on my terms. As for the recently layed off folks, I feel for y’all - this company is as ruthless as it’s ever been and this guy Dan ain’t gonna be a bag of laughs for any of us. Cheers and good luck. AGB

Building engineers

If any higher ups that are still employed and have access to Dan, just a thought. I was curious, I heard 50% of building engineers were let go in new England. 1 person to cover a entire state. I hope you realize we are heading into winter. A lot of the sites are remote. Expectations are they can get to a site within two hours. Please try and understand the logistics of this and thier jobs and everything that is involved in the regular maintenance, the preventive maintenance and say nothing about the emergencies. Getting there how far is the nearest help? What happens when a site goes down? What happens if multiple sites are on generator and they are required to be on-site? Also if they store fuel in large amounts ad most do there had to me a person certified in proper fuel and tank issues on site! They are also required to be on call 24/7 and within 2 hours from site. Please explain how that is going to work? Also what happens when someone needs PTO? is sick? Death in the family? Just curious what is the average cost for a sire going black? This is not sustainable! It will end badly, trust me! If you think you are going to hire outside contractor you definitely should not be in the position you are in.They bring nothing to the table and good luck finding anyone that is reliable. This also will end badly. Keep the union ,make it stronger. I have never seen a more dedicated group then I have seen in the Verizon union building engineers. They are fully dedicated and loyal to a fault and will do anything that is asked of them. You have tried Cushman and Wakefied has been a disaster to say the least! Building engineers are responsible for multiple properties and are responsible for facilities worth millions of dollars and keep them functional and keeping the customers and thier equipment running and thier services up.You really need to rethink this! Warned in advance.

No Union is not being laid off next maybe some buyouts but stop being bitter toward the union folks we didn’t it

Repost this guy is right Ha ha no they are offering a nice severance package to a small few union with Many decades under their belts .Its targeted their ready. But over all they are hiring field techs like crazy .Most areas that didn’t have fios are being built out it’s a decade long project. The 5g for the cell sites along with the new focus on business fiber will keep field techs very busy.I would say if anything the only union side that they maybe look to offer reduce head count that will not get replaced would be inside people like clerks and such.Unfortunately for any desk paper person they will consider you management at will .They will always look for ways to faze that out ,but hands on jobs may not make millions but are very dependable in the need .Most of the new generation do not want to do anything hands on .Especially with work from home being dangled in front of them for clerical work.So replacement of our extremely Aged work force with years and years of background will not be as easy as you think
