Thread regarding Kroger Co. layoffs

What's stopping us from unionizing?

Kroger is nothing without technology. The technology we design, build, and maintain is the reason this company can operate and make money.

It has been made obvious to us that our feedback means nothing. I don't know if anyone remembers when we used that "Slido" tool for anonymous feedback and by far the largest concern was that we do not support RTO.

Leadership is laying off our co-workers because of their own mistakes, pushing current employees further and further, and actively lying to us about the reason for these unpopular changes.

Tech unions are legal, and have happened before. And right now it is obvious that many of us have common ground at the same time and for the same reasons.

What, realistically, is stopping us from doing something about this? If they won't listen to our feedback, why shouldn't we force them to listen to our demands?

You're no better off without a union and just finding a new job, I know that is easy to say, but it's the truth as I know it. To further qualify that statement, it's only based on my experience. The only thing good that came out of one of the (two) unions I belonged to was improved health insurance, BUT we also got a hike in dues. Once established, you get the same type of people running the head office in the union that run other corporations. They begin to look at union dues over union fulfillment and the only reason strikes happen is to make sure the employees get paid enough to shovel money back into the union. Strikes are no fun, at least that much you can trust me on. Also, the employers find ways to take it out on the employees anyway or they raise prices to handle the union demands and end up closing or laying off, so you're back to where you started.

Unions work when the worker pool is exclusively local. If they can hire a guy in Bangalore or Hyderabad to connect over VPN and do it, they will.
