Advice for the new folks
If you are full of ideas and energy, this might not be the place for you. The system here slows everything down with endless layers of approval. Unless you have friends in high spots, your voice will never reach the right people. You are better off taking that drive somewhere that lets you actually build something. Exxon is not it.
Stop telling people to just leave!
Do you have a job you can offer me??? Trust me, a lot of us are trying to get out just so we don’t end up jobless. The job market is absolute trash right now. I’ve been actively looking for a new job for a year with zero luck. In my 15 years in the corporate world, it’s never been this hard to find something better.

Looking for a change
I’ve given my department too many chances and it’s starting to be foolish for me to stay and expect different.
Are there departments at the firm where if you ask a manager for help, they will actually be there to help not just blab on about the nonsense “I want to make sure you get the support you need” then being the biggest waste of time.
I thought about it and at first it made me mad that managers would always try to “put that back on you” but now i understand they just don’t know how to find the answers and aren’t willing to do any actual work.
Are there team out there where a manager will actually benefit the team and be there to offer guidance not just the fluff “support” that is a filler word for just ignoring you
Finding a new role
I wanted to create a thread so we can help each other with some advice on finding new roles. I’m in tech, and obviously the job market is worst it’s ever been. I stay up on certifications, education, and all that. Doesn’t seem to help a lot. Even did nano degrees here. Been trying to do LinkedIn and network, been applying to jobs for about 2 years now and only had a handful of interviews, got passed up for internal candidates on the final rounds. Anyone having luck getting interviews coming from ATT and if so, what methods are you using (mainly networking, job boards, etc…). Any particular companies you find folks getting jobs at coming out of here?

After 6 years, my first pay rise last year at 1% i'm out. I found a better offer on the table elsewhere with more money, yearly pay rise, bonus and way more better benefit.
What made me move, I started to think about my pension pot with that being maxed out at 12% with no salary increase the amount going into the pot will remain the same.
At least with the new company i contribute 5% they will add in 10%, which will grow with a annual pay rise.

Have a offer. How risky is to accept? They are paying way beyond their standard offering for the role. In Nike , placed fine but loosing my relevance and experience and grossly underutilized(Very high workload but low expertise/support role)

Leaving was the hardest decision I’ve ever made, but it ended up being the right one. The first few months were rough, with anxiety, second guessing, and sleepless nights, but once the dust settled, I realized how much lighter life felt. For anyone stuck in that same place, know that leaving doesn’t make you reckless.
Encouragement from someone who kept at it
After about ten months, I finally landed an offer. I sent roughly 130 applications, had about 20 recruiter chats, and survived three long final rounds before I got the coveted yes. I can’t even begin to explain how much of a burden off my chest that is. It wasn’t fast, but it happened.

If you make 2 or 3x the average household income in the USA, then you should be saving and index investing that extra 50 or 66 percent. If you don't, you are living a risky existence for stupid material things that mean nothing in the long run. Look at all of these posts here on the layoff forum. Realize that you are only 1 bad management decision away from earning a goose egg for a living. I retired at age 52. Because I earned several millions in about 20 years of working as a software developer at Fidelity Investments, by investing in index funds. I didn't want to retire but my stupid boss wanted to PIP me. And I had enough money. And I had enough of his BS. And I had an option to get out of the working world entirely. Because of simple decisions like driving a 20 year old car. And working on it myself. And investing in index funds. So simple. The future is never guaranteed. The present is your zone to make the most of, in the best interest of your future self. Layoff forum is just a wake up call to make your future financially secure.

There’s still hope even if you reach those dreaded late 50s
I keep seeing people panic after being let go in their late 50s, but I’ve watched a few land solid roles through headhunters who actually care. It’s not easy, but there are still companies willing to take experience over flash. I manage a mixed-age team, and the older folks are often the ones I rely on most. Keep your skills sharp, stay flexible, and don’t let anyone convince you you’re done.

Waiting for Avaya to get acquired by some big tech giant so I can proudly write in my resume, “Avaya now acquired by XYZ.” Because right now, no recruiter seems to recognize the brand, and my phone’s been awfully quiet.🥹😅

I could never take her seriously because of her silly name when I first met her as an FA. If she wanted to be taken more seriously she should take Mike's last name. Her parents did not do her any favorites. I think her parents may have been first cousins. She is from Tennessee, right?

I simply can’t find any other job
I’ve been trying for months, just to be on the safe side since I expected layoffs to happen. I thought job hunting would at least give me some peace of mind, but it’s done the opposite - I’ve started to panic. It’s so bad out there that I’m now even more terrified of losing this job. I feel cornered and paralyzed. I just hope the current job market slump is temporary, even though all signs point to it getting worse.
Dead end tech
Honeywell is a direct road to career obsolescence. Five years as an engineer and the most modern thing I have seen is a windows 7 controlled robot.. that doesn’t work.
AI… forget about it. You think you’re going to get a modern video card on that six hundred dollar laptop budget?
Meanwhile you hear rumors and stories of gleaming buildings in Asia where everyone has a phd and works for lunch money. All the best tools and a bus ride home.
Thinking of taking that offer? There is a reason Honeywell is the only one hiring. Tech job equivalent of a garbage picker.
Run and leave Honeywell off your resume if you can.
Internal Transfer to a different team
Does TIAA favor internal transfers versus external applicants? Looking to do a lateral move, I don't see any openings for the position I want, but figured I'd want to network with the manager to let them know I'm interested. Has anyone transferred internally that can provide any recommendation/tips on what they did? Worried that if I apply and don't get the role, then my boss would know that I'm looking to transition out of my current role.

What’s the REAL difference?
What’s the real difference between us giving a company notice and them giving us notice? We choose to work there, and either side decides how long it lasts. When you look at it that way, and realize nothing’s really owed beyond that choice, the frustration and anger kind of lose their grip. Just trying to help!
I know it’s not great to be let go or be told to be in office for X hours, but at the end of the day they are paying you for your time! Not the other way around!

How to job search out of the training institute?
I still have my job at TI, but this layoff makes me really understand the revolving door rumors I've heard about TI forever now. I got hired into TI straight out of school and have been here for a few years now. Is my job experience at TI normal to expect from other companies? I'm on the test/validation team of a product line, so I feel pigeon-holed into semiconductor places with lack of design experience.

I’m surviving all this only because I already treat my job as gone
I invest very little in what’s happening here and focus my energy on looking ahead. I’ve been building contingency plans and even started a small business initiative in case I can’t land another job. I can’t spend all my time being anxious about prospects here - it just whips you into a frenzy and paralyzes you. Better to save your energy for what truly matters and serves your interests. Everything else is a waste of time.
Don’t waste your best years
If you’re young and ambitious, take this as a warning: don’t spend your energy here. This place will grind you down until you’re too tired to care. Go build your skills somewhere that actually sees your worth.
