What Microsoft’s layoff denial reveals about viral rumors

Microsoft‘s communications chief did something unusual this month. He publicly shot down layoff rumors before they could metastasize. When anonymous posts on Reddit and Blind claimed the company planned to cut up to 22,000 jobs in January, Frank Shaw took to X with an unequivocal response, calling the reports “100 percent made up/speculative/wrong.”

Word On The Street: Lumen Arizona Techs Now Fired For Not Taking ATT Offers?

Any details if they got any severance / layoff / unemployment packages. Or where they outright fired since they were warned by Lumen that not taking their "similar job offers" with ATT would end this way. Will they have any recourse, has there been more than just AZ.

I dream of the day

I’m leaving. Too many days wondering if this is the life I’d have built for myself, no one to blame but me & my hope of brighter days that get increasingly dimmer.

Reorg. is helping. I don’t have bad news yet, but I know it’s coming. I’ve seen too many of the wrong types of people slither ahead, theyre now the next generation of decision makers. No visionaries, just folks who impressed the current and prior generation of bad decision makers.

I dream of the day I’m working at a company that buys up all of Shell’s valuable assets but none of their leadership.

Vimeo is gone

Most of us just got laid off. We knew Bending Spoons acquisition would be bad, we just didn't realize how bad it'll be. I'm not worried about my team. They're amazing engineers, everybody should be lucky to have them join their team. But that doesn't make this sting any less. And all for AI everybody hates.

What am I going to do?!

I've lost my voice from p!$$!ng and moaning about losing my job. My fingers are raw and cramped from posting here and on other forums. My extended family won't have anything to do with me. My wife is threatening to leave me! I haven't been able to find another job. What do I do????

How can Americans save themselves from getting laid off.

The world has changed and Americans now have to compete with global workforce. Now, the global workforce (workforce in India, etc. and H1-Bs in USA) work for much less than what Americans want.

Now, the companies of USA want to increase their profits so they will use cheap labour. They actually don't care about Americans, they only care about their profits and revenues. It is quite evident that the companies want profits even if they have to layoff Americans.

By the way, these all are the side-effects of capitalism.

So, now the only way for Americans to not get laid off is to ask the management to reduce their salary but let them keep their jobs.

Questions ahead of tomorrow

I'm new here, I'm stressing and unable to sleep, so please humor me. How are people notified? I know there's an email notification, but is it then a meeting just with your manager, HR, or somebody else? Is it a whole group at once or one by one? Are people terminated immediately or do you have to stay on for a few weeks? I'm just trying to figure out what to expect.

Winter is coming: A tale of Snow and PIPs

The first flakes drifted down over the city, soft and silent, promising a weekend of snowdrifts, frozen driveways, and the kind of cold that makes you grateful for firewood and LED candles. Neighbors huddled indoors, swapping soup recipes and checking weather apps like fortune tellers.

But inside the office buildings, another kind of storm brewed. HR invites fell like icy pellets: “We regret to inform you…” As those words echoed, the blizzard outside was matched by a blizzard of layoffs and PIPs inside. Cubicles emptied of cheer faster than sidewalks, and the chill wasn’t just in the air — it was in the morale.

Employees joked darkly: “Winter is coming.”Some meant the snowstorm barreling toward the city. Others meant the quarterly layoffs and PIPs barreling toward their careers. Both were inevitable, both demanded preparation.

So, just as families stocked up on groceries and salt for the driveway, workers stocked up on résumés and LinkedIn updates. The fireplace crackled at home, while leadership churned out performance metrics and “action plans.”

And in the end, everyone learned the same lesson: whether it’s snowflakes or layoffs and PIPs, winter always comes — and the only way through is to be prepared, keep warm, and remember that spring eventually follows.

Optum Layoffs

There is a layoff coming across Optum Health on 1/23. Unsure of size, but believe it to be significant.

All this while M&R “leadership” is at an offsite meeting in Scottsdale staying at the Grand Hyatt ($1K/night). Each attendee received a pair of air pods as an attendee gift, all while merit increased of 1% was announced earlier in the week.

The UGH/OPTUM "Ghost" Layoff- Avoiding WARN ... How 30,000+ People Disappear in One Day

The Reality for 2025-2026: As of 2025, UnitedHealth Group (UHG/Optum) owns and operates nearly 2,700 separate sub-companies (legal entities). When an employee hears that 30,000 coworkers are being cut, they expect to see a massive legal alarm or a national news headline. But UHG/Optum rarely triggers one, hence no WARN Act notices, or very rare.

They know the loopholes for unreportable numbers to keep the public, the government, and us employees in the dark.

And this doesn't even include the thousands of remote workers. UHG/Optums 'legal' argument is basically there cannot be a 'mass' firing in a single living room.... even if 100 are on a Teams call.

Inconsistently Meets

I got Inconsistently Meets at my most recent performance review.

Can I expect to get fired for cause within the next few days/weeks? Laid off at the next round? Or can I expect a few months to fix this?

Will my manager mark the "do not rehire" box if I am fired for cause? I had meets/exceeds until now, and had a good working relationship with my manager until now. I don't know if that helps.

Should I resign before I'm fired? I have years of savings, and I want to avoid the "do not rehire" box more than I need unemployment, since I assume it shows up on any reference. I can get good references from former managers and coworkers no longer with WF, but I still want a good reference from the company.

Thanks.

Global Celebration

Alfonso Ribeiro was hired to host the event yesterday. Did some research and he gets $75k-$150k per appearance. What a great way to sp-t in the faces of those recently RIFd

Anyone else catch the hot mic at the end? Sounded like Stephanie said “now on to the important people” to the room she was sitting in. How disgusting and of course it is edited out of the final video.

Layoff Call - can someone help explain it?

How do they communicate the severance agreement? Personal email or what? I know my coworker was laid off in November and lost immediate access to computer. So how do they communicate the info?

I have thought about this. If I get the layoff call, I will not be speaking on the call, I will type in the chat only. I am not giving them that final satisfaction of hearing my voice ever again or any of my emotions.

This was a Good Layoff in IT - Long Overdue

Targeting the level 15 was long overdue. Most of them were promoted due to favoritism and not talented and do not contribute anything significant over a level 13.

Many of the grade 15 I knew were given LoP out of favoritism, failed many deliverables and instead of being put on PIP, was covered by their manager pulling corporate politics. The 15 were getting paid more than midpoint.

The majority of 15 in TOS are a serious waste of the department budget and I approve of them getting laid off and they won't be missed.
