Minneapolis Uncovers Budget Errors, Reverses Some Layoffs

Minneapolis school district leaders acknowledged years of budgeting errors. These miscalculations worsened district deficits and caused staff layoffs. The district specifically miscoded special-education expenditures, losing millions in revenue. Correcting this error will add over $10 million in state revenue for both the current and next fiscal year. This financial improvement allows nearly 110 full-time positions to be saved from previous budget cuts.

Severance and unemployment

I was laid off last month and received severance. I will also apply for unemployment, and I know that unemployment doesn't start to pay until after the severance # weeks passes. Do I have to show that I'm looking for a job during that severance period, or am I able to take a break for a few weeks before starting my job search? I just want to make sure I can still qualify for unemployment in a few months if I don't start looking for a job right away. I'm in Minnesota if that matters.

Hennepin Layoffs

I just received a message from my amazing physician 2/7/26, that she is leaving Hennepin Health. My family is heartbroken. She was the best doctor all of us have ever seen. She listened, respected, was compassionate and always made time for us. Even the specialists we saw were amazing. We were at Whittier Clinic in the wonderful integrative health care clinic, which is being permanently closed at Whittier. Our community here in So Mpls is losing so much, in terms of medical accessibility and local businesses. Our community is already a food desert as well.

South Minneapolis is such a special place and my family has been here for four generations, since the redlining and covenants existed, which is why my grandparents could only live in this community.

I cant believe how much fraud and mismanagement has destroyed this community specifically (district 5), the city and the state. So many Americans are suffering under the impending economic collapse here and all anyone seems to care about are immigrants rights, as if no American citizens are also facing food, housing, medical and resource shortages and insecurities. We should be united and protesting this fraud! But no, the insanity and violence of these protestors and agigtators has negatively impacted our community and taken all of the attention away from the larger problem of state-wide fraud that hurts us all. What a shame.

Target Reduces Office Roles, Invests in Stores

This strategy aims to improve the overall customer experience. New CEO Michael Fiddelke is implementing these operational shifts.

Hennepin Healthcare Cuts (Jan 2026)

Hennepin Healthcare announced it will lay off about 100 employees and close or scale back several services as its financial crisis deepens. Leaders at Hennepin Healthcare said the publicly funded hospital is operating so far in the red that it needed a county line of credit to cover January payroll and must find at least $50 million in savings by the end of March.

The cuts include closing chiropractic, acupuncture, and sleep clinics, reducing stand-alone weight management services, transitioning senior and extended care to other systems, and shifting some pain management to primary care or outside providers. Officials cited fewer patients and sharp reductions in Medicaid reimbursements as key drivers of the crisis. While core services like trauma and burn care will be preserved, administrators warned this is likely the first of several difficult decisions ahead.

Wonewok sells for...$4 million (was valued 10 to 15 million)

Perhaps the final coup de grace from the (fall of the) Roman Empire. Mikey got rid of a beloved retreat. BB must need the money for more share buy backs.

At least the guy who bought it seems to love vacationing in northern Minnesota.

It would have been mothballed by BB anyway. If he won't spring for service dinners or Everyday Wins, then he definitely wouldn't want to pay for transportation and food and drinks for deserving employees.

Good memories for some there for sure. Pure Minnesota.

Minnesota Paid Leave

During open enrollment, the company stated that STD at 60% pay was provided at no cost to employee. With Minnesota Paid Leave, employees are now required to pay 0.44% for STD. This doesn’t seem accurate. The company should be paying the full 0.88% if STD 60% is provided at no cost to the employee.

Message from corporate neighbor in Mpls

Just wanted to chime in as one of your corporate neighbors in Minneapolis. This is awful and we are thinking of all of you.

Curious if the comp package of your ceo and executive team will change—this is their mismanagement.

Hang in there, our team is disgusted enough to avoid lunch break target runs for awhile. I don’t think that I will ever spend as freely there again- thought they were good employers and corporate citizens.

Minnesota Cut

Upper management in Bloomington was just briefed this morning by Atlanta and Dallas that due to high costs, low productivity, high absenteeism, non-collaborative local union and unfavorable politics for business, the Minnesota office will be announced 12/15/25 complete closure by end of first quarter for all orgs and work groups at that premise. Facilitating ease is that the current lease shall be terminated 3/31/26 as the new property owner has other plans for the site. All union workers will receive the termination plan per contract and management employees will be advised of their severance pay. Costs need to be cut and the Minnesota location does not align with the company's plans.

60 days is the Warn act

Wanted to ensure everyone knows that the 60 days that is provided is not out of generosity of target. Its a way they are actually getting around notifying the minnesota government of the mass layoffs. Instead of notifying the government first 60 days in advance of a planned layoff, its notifying employees and at the same time telling the government. Look up the minnesota warn act.

Just piling onto the absolute abysmal job target is doing to communicate.

A little fear

The truth is that a little fear is good (for us that have been so comfortable with Target) it’s helping us do something we might have not thought about doing. Looking outside of Target. This is not the Target I know anymore. For those of us in Minnesota, things will be tough. Stay strong, update your resumes and start looking, even if you make it out.

Upsher-Smith Job Cuts / 2025

Upsher-Smith will close its Plymouth, Minnesota plant at 14905 23rd Avenue North and lay off 58 workers. The closure date is April 1, 2025, with layoffs occurring in two or three waves through July 31. Some Plymouth staff will transfer to the company’s Maple Grove facility at 6701 Evenstad Dr. N., which will remain open. A portion of the layoffs will occur at Maple Grove.

The move follows the company’s 2024 acquisition by Taiwan based Bora Pharmaceuticals for 210 million dollars. Upsher-Smith framed the closure as a strategic realignment to optimize global operations and better serve customers. The firm manufactures several generic dr-gs, including vigabatrin, everolimus, and topiramate.

Founded in 1919 by Frederick Alfred Upsher Smith, the company was owned by Ken Evenstad from 1969 and later sold to Japan based Sawai Pharmaceutical in 2017 before the 2024 sale to Bora. The WARN notice detailing the closure was filed with Minnesota’s Department of Employment and Economic Development.
