Several Nike employees took to LinkedIn Tuesday to say they were laid off from the footwear and apparel giant.
Nike (NYSE: NKE) did not immediately reply to a request to comment on the layoff reports, including how many jobs were cut and in what departments, but several LinkedIn posts say talent acquisition was one department affected.
“Hard to find the words … but like many other amazing people lately, I was #laidoff from #Nike yesterday. If you have followed me or worked with me at all, you know how much I love my career and what I GET to do,” Jordan Ingram posted. According to LinkedIn, she was a senior insights and analytics recruiter at Nike for a year and a half. “There is no greater joy than being able to love your job and the company you work for.”
Natalie Rincon, who also worked in Nike’s talent acquisition department, said she was laid off and worked for the company for almost two years on her LinkedIn.
“Yesterday, I was impacted by the layoffs at Nike. It has been an amazing two years working alongside talented individuals, but I plan on using this time to recharge and refresh before diving back into the job search,” Rincon said.
The poster did not respond to messages from the Business Journal through LinkedIn.
Tech companies, including Intel, Amazon, Google and Microsoft, have laid off thousands of workers over the last few months while the footwear and apparel industry has been relatively left out of the trend.
But industry leaders like Nike and Adidas have had their own struggles, including excess inventory and supply chain problems. Adidas posted preliminary revenue growth expectations last week of just 1% for 2022, compared to its 2021 revenue growth of 16%. While Nike is faring better, its inventories during the second quarter were still up 43%.
Nike is the largest footwear and apparel employer and second largest manufacturing firm in Oregon, employing more than 15,000 people locally and 79,000 globally.
The last time the company enacted corporate-wide layoffs was early 2021, but it did not disclose the amount of jobs cut. In 2020, Nike laid off approximately 700 workers at its Beaverton world headquarters.
