Severance impact on unemployment

Really hoping someone can help, I have asked HR, surplus line and my supervisor and no one knows answer, will getting severance impact unemployment, I was surplused 11/6 and am struggling to get job so need unemployment to help, I thought I read in here once a post that this lump sum payment should not impact unemployment but I cannot find that or the reason why it should not, appreciate any input from anyone who has been in this situation

Reapply to VZW after 6 month time restriction

Any1 tryna to or hoping to re apply after their severance for a vzw role that opens up in a similar part of the business after their 6 mo timeframe expires? Guess you can be rehired after 6 months. Anyone’s supe tell them they will try and bring them back into a similar role after 6 months? Anyone’s leaders say they foresee spots opening back up in the next few months? Mine keeps telling me that she swears she will be able to get me back into another sales role in the biz in a few months timeframe with new reqs. Anyone else hearing this? What do y’all think?

Benefits Information for U.S. Employees

NEW U.S. SEPARATION PAY PLAN
Introducing a new BNY U.S. Separation Pay Plan (to replace U.S. Supplemental Unemployment Benefit Plan (SUB Plan))
This February we are transitioning from BNY's U.S. Supplemental Unemployment Benefit Plan (SUB Plan) to a new BNY U.S. severance plan (Separation Pay Plan). The transition will simplify severance, align it with industry standards, and provide more flexibility for employees whose roles are eliminated.
The Separation Pay Plan provides financial and healthcare support for eligible employees during career transitions. The key changes will be:
Severance payments will be made as a lump sum (rather than installments).
For employees enrolled in BNY healthcare coverage at notification, an additional lump sum payment will be included as part of the severance package. This will be calculated based on the amount that BNY would have contributed to healthcare benefits for the severance period (with a cap at 20 weeks).
• There will generally be a 30-day notice period during which active pay and benefits continue (previously 2 weeks).
• Severance will not stop or need to be repaid if an employee obtains a new job outside of BNY.
Guidance on Severance Calculations
Eligible employees may receive severance pay equal to the greater of 2 weeks of base pay per year of service (no change from previous plan), or minimums shown in the chart below, with a maximum benefit of 52 weeks of base pay. Separation Pay Plan benefits are subject to the requirement of a fully executed and effective release of claims. All Separation Pay Plan payments are taxable and subject to wage withholding.

Can we go on leave of absence while in a severance .period?

I am curious if one could go on leave of absence while they are in their severance period which ends on December 26. I just received a letter in the mail telling me that the employer is going to pay for this starting on January 1, 2026. If anybody has any insight on this, I would appreciate a response.

Severance and time in payroll

For NJ workers 90 days under payroll, u like other states that are only 30 days. With the possibility to still apply internally within the company or search for another source of income while under payroll. Though tempting to look within, it is a hard choice since also being offered a severance package and expand your horizons elsewhere.

Getting a new job?

How does it work for getting a new job? My last day at Verizon is in February. I don't want to wait until February to start looking I want to be able to look and possibly get a job. But if that happens before February do I have to tell Verizon? What is the ruling around this?

I have seen so many people on LinkedIn post that there in the market for a job and I kind of want to do the same thing but I don't want to jeopardize my severance.

No Union is not being laid off next maybe some buyouts but stop being bitter toward the union folks we didn’t it

Repost this guy is right Ha ha no they are offering a nice severance package to a small few union with Many decades under their belts .Its targeted their ready. But over all they are hiring field techs like crazy .Most areas that didn’t have fios are being built out it’s a decade long project. The 5g for the cell sites along with the new focus on business fiber will keep field techs very busy.I would say if anything the only union side that they maybe look to offer reduce head count that will not get replaced would be inside people like clerks and such.Unfortunately for any desk paper person they will consider you management at will .They will always look for ways to faze that out ,but hands on jobs may not make millions but are very dependable in the need .Most of the new generation do not want to do anything hands on .Especially with work from home being dangled in front of them for clerical work.So replacement of our extremely Aged work force with years and years of background will not be as easy as you think

Notice of Critical Timeline Doc -- Exit Package

The first sentence on the above doc says: You are advised to consult with your attorney before signing your Severance Agreement and Release ("Release") ...... etc.

Is that really necessary? And, anyone done that in the past and if so why? If you are inclined to share and Tx.

Severance Expense

Looking at the FIS quarterly report, FIS has paid out $205 million in severance this year compared to $34 million for the same period last year. Also there is a comment, "The Company continues to evaluate its organizational structure and expects to
incur additional severance costs in the fourth quarter of 2025." I wonder how many people that equates to?

Severance Package was Amazing

Been with the company almost 20 years and this is like hitting the lottery. My 401k is already enough to fund an early retirement, but the severance package was amazing! I'm not complaining! Plus we are getting full payout of vacation and STI.

I might look for another job, one that isn't stressful, or just call it quits after this.

Legal note

To those impacted, by accepting the severance, you are not able to take legal action against Verizon. If you have something that you’ve been afraid to speak up on that has legal ramifications, consult with an attorney before accepting the severance.

It’s not fair to say all of Verizon is shady. There are shady leaders. Some who continuously get away with things even after valid reports to HR.

If you plan on applying for unemployment...

If you plan on applying for unemployment make sure you research the timelines. Verizon will ask you to sign your severance ASAP. They will not advise on what's best for you here. You will have a window in which to sign your severance. For us it was 45 days. If you sign within 30 days of your last day (in NY anyway) you cannot apply for unemployment.
Don't use my timelines. Do the research. It's important, and they will not tell you even if you ask.

Some info

I’m from Texas and I recently found out that upper leadership is getting with management and Regional Managers trying to figure out what positions are really needed within the clinic nurses and medical assistants, so I know cuts are for sure coming. So they would rather put more work on staff members, then hire another body. In my honest opinion, they are going to get rid of all the seasoned employees that are getting paid more so they can hire new hires and if you do get laid off, they’ll probably make you take the severance package lose all the years under your belt with the company and then re-hire you at zero years. I was unfortunately part of the first round of layoffs a few years ago and that was part of the package if you take the severance package, you lose all the years under your belt.

Employment Attorney - Baskin Ridge

Just an FYI, I reached out to Costello Silverman attorneys (see below).
I'll have my consultation on Friday, will update you on how it goes.
My case is a bit different if compared to others but I will be asking general questions too.
Not sure if anything can be done given the severance and 'at will' clause but I will try nonetheless.
Good luck all

Severance Payout date?

Does anyone know when the severance checks will be sent or direct deposited? I am trying to figure out that if my last day is 12/19 when will the checks or deposit be dated. Will it be dated 12/19/25. Or 4 weeks later so we get paid in January 2026? It’d be better federal tax wise to be paid in 2026, wouldn’t it? I just can’t tell by the wording in the severance documents. I’ll call them tomorrow, but wondered if anyone here had some insight.
