Classic corporate cuts strategy

Whenever there are talks about cuts, it's always the exceptional performer, the ones who delivered at critical times are on the chopping block instead of the ones coasting breezily.

The reason???
Majority of slackers (you know who you are) won't be affected by the change, but there could be a few who will think this as a wake up call and step up.

And being a top performer, the corporate would think you'll land on your feet somewhere else even after being cut off.

That's a classic tale tell strategy, after 16 years at fidelity and close to retiring, that's one hard but honest truth

For those looking to be laid off

I've figured out the game here. Most managers won't fire you for saying no because that requires confrontation and documentation. They're cowards who depend on you doing the work they can't do. So they just let it slide. Meanwhile they're building a list of people to sacrifice in the next layoff. You want on that list? Say no more often. Protect your energy and watch yourself move up the rankings. When the cuts come, you'll have a lighter workload and a severance package. It's a win.

The relocation trap

We had a group of people who relocated last year. Picked up their families, bought houses, got settled. Then most of them were gone within six months during the last major purge. Intel didn't care. A relocation isn't protection. It's just another cost on their spreadsheet. If they need to cut, they'll cut. Your moving expenses don't factor in.

I'm starting to pray to be laid off

I swear I am. I cannot take this psychological torture anymore. People are not built to carry this much stress day after day. At this point, I would almost rather be laid off. I know jobs are scarce, but I would rather stay sane and search for something else for a while than slowly lose my mind here.

Applying for jobs

I've lost count, but the last time I checked I was above 300 applications, which still feels surreal to say out loud. I’m applying to roles I’m genuinely qualified for, the kind where my background, skills, and experience should line up, yet the response has mostly been silence. To say this makes potential layoffs scarier would be an understatement.

I love my team but I'm scared

This is the weirdest spot to be in. I actually enjoy what I do and the people I do it with. But the layoffs keep coming and they keep taking the best people. Every quarter I do the math. Who's left? Who went? Will it be me next time? I know the market is brutal out there so I'm trying to line something up. I'd rather leave on my own than wait for the tap on the shoulder.

The method is clear

Keep cutting staff, squeeze the remaining people harder, and use fear to keep everyone in line. That's the strategy here. They're not even attempting to hide it anymore. Deadlines are tighter and tighter, expectations are higher, and there's always the unspoken warning about what happens if you push back. This is just how Wells Fargo operates these days.

Vicious circle.

A post was made of: “Using the same tools.. a dev shouldn’t be building a system using xyz tools and another dev building with abc tools. Reduce the amount of redundant tools”

The problem is that someone up top needs to show growth and innovation, a year end bullet point is needed. Some vendor takes them to lunch and shows them a pamphlet of their product. The next thing you know a “high valued important product has been purchased for the company to do ”, but wait it gets better.

They then goal, or force, MD’s an their reports to use new and improved said tool. After a few months of this enforcement, it’s hailed as a gleaming success. It doesn’t matter if there’s other tools being used already that does the same thing…this is new, but wait it gets better.

Often times, its realized that either:
a.) the new tool does not scale up
b.) the new tool is too expensive on the licensing renewals.
c.) the new tool does exactly what the read pamphlet says, to a point. Yes, it inventories all your servers……but not vm’s for example, you shoulda read the fine print. Remember that old chestnut.

Over time the newly purchased tool is either partially used and\or is forgotten about.
Lesson learned? NOPE! Rinse, repeat. So long as these up top decision makers, these stellar shot callers keep thinking like this and fall for the over the top sales pitch, it’ll never change. All that you need to do is take Bob out to lunch at a fancy restaurant, tell him he’s awesome to boost his ego and the sale of the new tool to Citi is as good as done.

It’s all ok though, we can just lay more people off to pay for it, right?

Where is all the updates

This company lays off folks all the time. No reason other than the company isn't meeting their targets. Management team has no loyalty at all to long time, good employees. Even half the HR team including the CPO was canned recently.

And don't get me started. There are no merit increases. And they give you a 401k match but it's funded only once a year. In September 2025 you get your 2024 match. Cool, huh?

SK On Cuts Nearly 1,000 US Battery Plant Jobs

SK On laid off nearly 1,000 workers. The layoffs occurred at its Georgia battery plant. The decision stems from slowing electric vehicle demand. This reduction affects about 37 percent of the plant's workforce. The company cited restructuring efforts and market conditions.

Soon all Saks and Neiman's stores will close. Round two of closures included high profile stores

Chicago, Las Vegas, Honolulu, Tysons Corner, and South Coast Plaza are all top tier locations with lots of foot traffic in the mall and surrounding areas, if these locations are closing, I eventually see all locations going under. Please, if you count on Saks or Neiman's as your main source of income, start looking for a new job, I'm so sad for all the wonderful people I worked in the 24 years I was at Neiman's. Times are changing and not for the better. God bless everyone at Saks and Neiman's stores.
