I was laid off a week for the 9/11 attack. And yes, that was worse. Suddenly no one was hiring. Fortunately for me a friend helped me get a job at his place of employment. It was the worst job I ever had (pay, working conditions, etc.), but it was a job. I couldn't find anything else for almost 2 years.
The former employer hired an outplacement firm to help us find work. They told me to not accept the lousy job, that there would be others. Fortunately, I ignored their bad advice.
No, and it's terrifying.

anytime you don't have another job lined up is the worse time. Never mind about one door closes another door opens. When the door behind you closes, the doors to be opened are not very promising -
Just treat it as a chance to change something in your career path.
Don't worry. Once patent 666 is implemented, anyone who wants a job will have one!
