This is the weirdest spot to be in. I actually enjoy what I do and the people I do it with. But the layoffs keep coming and they keep taking the best people. Every quarter I do the math. Who's left? Who went? Will it be me next time? I know the market is brutal out there so I'm trying to line something up. I'd rather leave on my own than wait for the tap on the shoulder.

The following was basic advice since before there was a Cisco::
1) Bulk up on skills companies will pay for
2) Bulk up your professional network
3) Realize judicious job jumps can significantly broaden your skills and increase your income
4) Even now when companies like Cisco shut down whole organizations tossing best in class along with worst in class, trying to get a job when you don't currently have one is punished in many ways
what's the question? You just said you'd rather leave on your own than deal with the anxiety....so, solve your own problem?
Same boat, my man. Same boat.
You can't worry about what might happen but you can prepare for it.
