AP Layoffs & Changes

So now that AP has had all of its powers stripped and the new boss has laid off all of oversight, restructured technology to lay off people, and cut all of the district taskforce teams to replace only some of them with 1 investigator, how do we all think this is going to pan out?

I doubt his desperate attempt to offset the future losses (from his policies) by cost cutting everywhere else will not work. I expect store AP teams to start being cut by end of FY26 to cover for increased theft.

Also, what a great idea to cut technology! Not like 80-90% of the stores are running equipment from the late 90s that barely works or doesn’t work at all. This company loves to talk big about investing in our stores when they haven’t provided a comprehensive investment to safety & security in the last 30 years.

Where are the technologist?

About a year ago I was talking about MU and the eminent shortage in memory to a Director level dude, his response, 'they're still around?'. That right there tells you all you need to know about the direction of this company. There are a lot of people in high places making important decisions that don't actually care or even understand technology. Middle management has a severe lack of vision and probably accountability.

Walmart is how it's done!

$1 trillion valuation first for non tech company. Stock thru the roof. And here is Nike claiming to be a tech company under JD and continuing to underwhelm both in tech and product.
Sure it's not a 1 to 1 comparison but goes to show competent leadership can weather headwinds like tariffs which if anything expose Walmart equally if not more! And BTW a lot of the Walmart growth is attributed to astute use of technology.
Few years back had the opportunity to join Walmart tech, back then Nike was the cool kid so I didn't consider it... Dang it!

Meta Reduces Reality Labs Staff, Prioritizes Wearables Development

Meta announced 1,500 job cuts, primarily within its Reality Labs division. The company is reassessing its long-term virtual reality and metaverse investments. CFO Susan Li stated Reality Labs spending will now focus more on wearables. This shift includes shutting down VR gaming studios and cancelling content initiatives. Wearables, especially smart glasses, have shown stronger market demand for Meta.

AI guy gets replaced by....AI

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GjkCSQndS1E

16k layoffs at Amazon, totaling 30k over the past year, or ~10%. The most important thing he said in the video was this (paraphrasing):

They are laying off AI Safety researchers and security experts in lieu of hiring more pure developers with a primary goal of automating as much as they possibly can. It would be prudent to watch these tech companies who are leading the pack and understand that what they are doing is a preview of what is to come.

GM ONE...

Really... Really?
What a down grade. It looks more like the aol site from 1998 than a website from 2026…
This is clearly a sign of things to come. It looks like a landing page for one of these AI slop regurgitated news aggregate sites Honestly I'm almost sure someone said , just run it through ai.
Speaking of ai, what the fu-k are we doing there? It's 2026 and we have nothing to show in ai advances. Yeah sure managers are poorly copiloting their email responses and take out orders but what in the way of innovation? Something original and useful?

What a poor user interface and unintuitive layout. First we decouple from teams.... Kinda but since it's integrated with ms office suite which we use for everything we still have to use teams sometimes. Slack is a dumpster fire designed for codebros. I'd rather go back to skype than use that abomination.
Who is making these poor poor decisions on our tech? Are we just handing the company over to China when the SAIC contract expires in 2027. Have you looked at what they are doing? GMNA he's fallen WAY WAY behind.

The Changing Market

Anthropic’s Claude can already convert significantly complex SAS programming streams into Python and related libraries. Complex systems of nested macros might require human intervention, but these tools are only going to get better.

IOW, the years are getting shorter for expensive proprietary software like SAS. Recently spoke with someone who is a director at GSK and told me they no longer use SAS in any department she is aware of.

Have we reached a point where it is delusional to think that SAS can recover without coming up with some kind of strong AI-based niche play going forward? Given the acceleration of AI tools that can parse and transform complex programming languages, isn’t it more reasonable to think that SAS has maybe 3 to 5 more years of reliable renewable revenue instead of 8 to 10 more years?

AI profile photos on the rise in IT

Go take a look at the profile pictures of all of the usual “look at me!” suspects in IT. They’ve found a cool new superficial way to draw attention to themselves through artificial intelligence via photo filtering and touch ups of themselves. ROFLMAO!!

Nothing like taking a powerful business productivity tool and turning into your own personal Keurig for your vanity. Just go get the facelift you’ve been searching the web for, will you?

In March 2025, U.S. Renewables Generated 50.8 Percent of Electricity, Beating Fossil Fuels for the First Time

In March 2025, a monumental shift occurred in the energy landscape of the United States.

For the first time ever, renewable energy sources powered over 50% of the U.S. electricity grid, surpassing fossil fuels in what is a historic moment for the environment. Wind, solar, and hydroelectric power led the charge, marking a massive step toward a cleaner and more sustainable energy future. This shift proves that green energy is not just a possibility, but an undeniable reality.

The transition to renewable energy has been a long time coming, but the momentum we’re seeing now is unprecedented. For years, renewable sources struggled to compete with fossil fuels, both in terms of cost and capacity. But the rapid advancements in technology, along with increased investments in clean energy infrastructure, have made renewables more affordable and efficient than ever before. The future of energy is no longer reliant on dirty fossil fuels, and this shift offers hope for future generations.
Wind and solar, in particular, have seen tremendous growth. The cost of solar panels has dropped significantly, making it a viable option for residential and commercial use. Wind turbines are becoming more efficient, and hydroelectric power continues to provide consistent and reliable energy. This diverse mix of renewable sources ensures that the U.S. can meet its energy needs while significantly reducing its carbon footprint.
Despite the progress, there is still much work to be done. The U.S. must continue to invest in energy storage solutions to manage the intermittent nature of solar and wind power. Additionally, expanding renewable energy infrastructure and updating the grid to handle a greater share of green energy are critical steps in this transition. But for the first time, there is a clear path forward, and the momentum is on our side.

The shift toward renewable energy represents more than just an environmental victory; it’s an economic opportunity. As renewable energy continues to grow, it can create jobs, stimulate innovation, and reduce our reliance on imported fuels. A future powered by wind, solar, and hydro is not only cleaner but also brighter for the economy and the planet.

Second thoughts

I think I should say this. I had heard good things about PNC and had found a couple positions I wanted to apply for in Technology, but after hearing the CEO‘s decision on a 5 day work week, and how the morale has completely changed, there is no way that I want to work for PNC. I truly believe I’d be miserable every day. I will take my talent and expertise where employees are cared about and respected.

Heads Up technology team

Technology impacts are likely tomorrow or Tuesday. People with higher salaries and weaker technical alignment may be affected first. This includes Managers and Senior Managers, based on pay and skill set.
It’s going to be tough everyone’s in survival mode, and leadership isn’t very flexible right now. Keep an eye on your calendar Monday night or Tuesday morning.

Change your priorities!

I’m going to join the rest of you in Technology! PNC wants me in the office 5 days a week, no problem. Just to let managers know, when my shift ends, I am not available until the next business day at my starting time. I simply cannot make myself available during my commute into work or after work or on my personal time any longer. I have over an hour commute to and from work. I need to change my availability to be there for my family. It’s unfortunate because this is not something I wanted to do, but in order to accommodate my family I had to make some changes just like PNC had to do. As far as technology is concerned, I don’t think any managers should be reaching out after office hours when issues arise. It’s unreasonable to have employees come in the office every day and get home after 6 o’clock and then have managers calling you because online banking is down. My cell phone will be turned off.
