Iowa Statute Changes School Funding, Public Jobs At Risk

Iowa's new law increases funding and autonomy for charter schools. This has raised concerns for the state's public schools. Opponents fear potential teacher layoffs and reduced resources. The law also relaxes requirements for homeschooling families. Public school advocates question fair funding for two systems.

Medtronic PR spins layoff chatter as “rumors”

another sign that modern day Medtronic lacks the values of the company founded by Earl is the Medtronic PR spin that layoffs are just “rumors.” To show professionalism toward the possibly thousands of employees who were let go this week, it would go a long way to publicly acknowledge layoffs, thank former employees for their work, and speak to how it is a consequence of re-organization, even if layoffs really are a result of executive incompetence more than anything.

Workers bought into the company. They dedicated years of their lives to the mission. They played the game and built careers here. There’s no reason to pretend they never existed. It’s amazing how PR works so hard to defend the company’s public image at the expense of tanking morale internally. It really is shameful.

LAUSD Funds Private Equity While Facing Layoffs

A report reveals Los Angeles Unified School District contract commitments. Hundreds of millions went to private equity or venture capital-backed companies. This happened while LAUSD projected a deficit and issued layoff notices. Over 86% of new digital instruction contracts were with these private firms. The spending raises concerns about public education funds diverting to private investors.

Jefferson Schools Warn of Layoffs, Program Cuts

The Jefferson Township Board of Education faces a $4.8 million budget deficit. Officials warn this gap may force layoffs and program eliminations. Potential cuts include team sports and arts programs. The district is urging residents to advocate for more state aid. A public rally is scheduled for March 7 to support increased funding.

Advice for Dan after watching him at Davos

Dan, respectfully, you represent all of us and I was a little embarrassed by your appearance on the HBR panel at Davos. For next time, here are 3 pieces of advice:
1.) Shave.
2.) Sit up. Don't slouch. Posture's a huge non-verbal.
3.) If wearing a black top, thoroughly brush it off before go-live.
What was on display did not seem to represent the focus and determination of Verizon employees to restore this company to greatness. Thanks.

Thoughts about the Dec. 16 town hall?

Here’s what I got out of it:

1) There is a new corporate strategy called Lead to One that is about focusing more on the consumer and personalization. (Every 5 years we claim we’re now going to focus on the consumer, but don’t actually make any of the necessary investments and then abandon it. So excuse me if I’m highly skeptical.)

2) Our expenses are way too high and need to be drastically reduced. (We’ve been hearing that for many years and yet the same leadership that hasn’t fixed it is still in place. Where should the blame be placed?)

3) Layoffs will definitely continue. Evanko said we’ll have fewer employees next year than this year. (No surprise there.)

4) We’re counting on AI to be our savior and are going to push as many things to AI as possible.

5) The only business that is performing well is specialty pharmacy.

6) The VillageMD investment and our attempt at creating a care delivery strategy was a failure. (Even though it’s obvious, I’m glad they actually admitted that. Interesting that the failed MDLIVE acquisition wasn’t mentioned though. I guess we just don’t talk about that.)

7) We’re going to do more lobbying and public relations to try to control the narrative about Cigna.

Did anyone hear something different? What did I miss?

COBRA CUT OFF DATE REMINDER

Hey, for those unfortunate (or fortunate) People like me that were surplussed in the past... the cutoff date to renew your COBRA benefits is Nov 7! Of course you will not receive any reminders as I did not from the COmpany to remind you of this important cutoff date: Dont assume you have until the end of November - it is by November 7th.

Most have probably found much cheaper insurance, but I found the Vision plan and Careplus (extended) to be pretty good and kept it. But of course no reminder to renew. Just a public service announcement as we all have other things going on in life, didnt want my old freinds and co-workers to miss out and get scr_wed once again. All the best! I hope you are all in a better place then where we were!
