Hancock Builders May Cut Staff Over Funding Freeze

Financing for build-to-rent projects has halted nationwide. This is due to a federal housing bill moving through Congress. Berkeley Heights Parking

It’s a valid point that when/if construction begins that we lose more spots.

It’s starting to feel like the garage is not happening. Like they’ll just keep the status quo. Dark thought, but if enough people are let go, then it’ll just go back to 2023 where parking is tight but mostly manageable.

I don’t mean to be a Speculating Steve, but it’s now been almost a full year since the initial announcement. And with each passing date, it feels more and more like the garage is never actually happening.

Another Expensive Bet at the Worst Possible Time

Oil is going up again, and that hits way more than gas. It drives up the cost of literally everything tied to construction. Steel, concrete, transportation, labor, all of it gets more expensive fast. It’s not crazy to see 25-50% increases when energy spikes.

And we’re in the middle of committing billions at peak pricing to a new HQ… right as commercial real estate is weakening and companies everywhere are cutting office space.

That’s the part that’s hard to ignore. This isn’t just a bad look, it’s bad timing. You’re locking into a massive, fixed-cost project while the market is moving the other way and the cost to build it is actively rising. (Again)

We could easily be talking about hundreds of millions more than originally expected just because of where energy and inflation are heading.

We’ve seen this pattern before. Big bets. Late timing. Expensive outcomes. Yet another blunder… It’s beyond being bad luck. This is an ongoing pattern of failure.

LHBA: London Construction Sector Experiences Layoffs

The London Home Builders’ Association warns of significant job losses. Over 60 percent of its members laid off staff last year. Further layoffs are expected in the next six months. Seven Wisconsin Businesses Reduce Workforce by 366 in January

Seven Wisconsin companies filed layoff notices in January, affecting 366 workers. The state's unemployment rate remained low at 3.1%. Economists observed a general slowdown in hiring activity. Retirements are a major factor contributing to the labor force decline. Manufacturing jobs decreased, but the construction sector saw an increase.

New Plano campus ain’t gonna happen, folks!

Do y’all realize how many announcements Apple, Google, and gang have made about new campuses then the start date for construction gets pushed for this or that reason? Do you know how many permits it takes to knock down huge existing office buildings and the time it will take to pull up massive parking lots and roadways? Just thinking about the number of dump truck runs needed is mind boggling.

This is just big talk to make the news and try to garnish a stock price “buy” recommendation. A new CEO will be named in the next few years and will squash this whole idea, lease a few buildings and call it a day!

Construction companies lay off 123 workers in Gillette

Hoskinson Contracting and Hoskinson Concrete gave walking papers to a combined 123 employees this week, and an official with one firm said the concrete company will close permanently.

The number of workers laid off is significant, according to state officials, and beyond normal seasonal fluctuations in the construction industry.

Cant even figure out batteries

  • Barton Malow confirmed layoffs at the $3 billion GM and Samsung SDI battery cell plant in New Carlisle, Indiana, as construction enters a slower phase.
  • The company described the cuts as a normal part of the construction cycle and noted that affected workers may return once project activity increases.
  • The Indiana facility, part of GM’s goal to produce 1 million electric vehicles annually in North America, includes two large buildings valued at $875 million and $855 million.
  • Work paused as Samsung reviewed equipment design changes, though construction is still expected to finish by December 2027.
  • The slowdown reflects broader trends in manufacturing and clean-tech construction, with similar delays at Kore Power’s Arizona site and Intel’s Ohio One semiconductor project.

Not layoffs – building move questions

What is going on for construction over at BAT? Teams are moving there on Monday yet half of the building is still closed. Can someone shed some light on what is ACTUALLY going on?

Not sure why they are cramming everyone into a building that isn’t finished, yet departments at the AUR building were told to WFH for the next 3 weeks.
