My boss is all in on using H1Bs, even with citizens and green card holders on the team who have the same skills. He’s literally taking work from U.S. employees and putting an H1B's name on it. The H1Bs aren't even doing the real work; they're just shadowing and secretly managing us.

This was never an issue for me before, but with layoffs happening everywhere and U.S. workers being the target, I'm worried. I already know HR is a dead end. I tried complaining to my second-line manager, and it just backfired. Now they just see me as a complainer and not assigning much work at all.

According to the AEM guidelines, in-office presence is based on business needs rather than a strict requirement. The "three days per week" guideline is flexible and intended as general guidance. Your manager may request more or fewer days in the office depending on team needs.

Time spent in the office can be minimal, even as little as one hour, and arrival time is flexible unless you are expected to attend a scheduled meeting. Once that obligation is fulfilled, you are free to leave.

If you prefer or need to attend meetings virtually while in the office, for example due to health concerns or other personal reasons, that is also acceptable.

In practice, this means I will go into the office, find an available desk, join the meeting virtually from there, and then leave once it is concluded.

During the last week of August 2025, Senior Leadership instructed all departments to eliminate 5% of their workforce due to financial concerns with the decrease of enrollment. It seems that the individuals chosen were at random. Individuals were laid off effective immediately and were not given any prior notice. Individuals were required to turn over any and all University-owned technology. The University deactivated all individual's accounts within 24 hours. The University offered "severance" to some individuals.

It’s really ridiculous reading these bragging about Q1 financial success and people excited below in the comments with peans. The former chemical engineer and biofuels researcher at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory in Richland was furloughed two months ago. In August, PNNL laid him off, along with 90 other jobs being cut in recent weeks.

I’m really hoping they give us a chance to leave voluntarily because I would take it immediately. Things have been so tense and uncertain, it feels like the best move to step away before the stress really hits hard.
