50 jobs lost at UC Health

UC Health is cutting 50 jobs across its organization, citing financial pressures and the need to reduce costs. The Cincinnati-based academic health system, which has about 12,000 employees, says those affected have been offered severance and may apply for other open positions within UC Health. Earlier this year, the system disclosed plans to shut down a post-acute care facility and an assisted living facility by the end of September - moves projected to affect about 474 workers. Also, UC Health will wind down its Mobile Stroke Unit later this month, though those workers will remain employed. UC Health is headquartered in Cincinnati, Ohio.

CNBC / NBCUniversal Layoffs

CNBC is planning new staff cuts in its international division. About two dozen jobs may be affected, mostly in London and Singapore, with some in other cities. The layoffs are focused on the digital editorial team. Because of UK labor rules, the cuts are in a consultation period before they can be finalized.

These changes come as parent company NBCUniversal prepares to spin off most of its cable networks into a new group called Versant. Bravo will remain with NBCUniversal, but CNBC and others will move. The spinoff is expected soon and is hiring around 750 new staff. Sources say the CNBC layoffs are not directly linked to the Versant launch.

The international arm of CNBC is led by Deep Bagchee, who took over in 2024. He replaced John Casey, a long-time leader at the network. Bagchee has been guiding CNBC’s global coverage in a media world that is shifting quickly to digital.

The outcome of the consultation process will decide how many people lose their jobs. For now, CNBC is trying to cut costs while still aiming to keep its reputation as a top source for business news worldwide.

How much is 9K + 18K?

Amazon is cutting more jobs. The company said it will lay off 9,000 workers in the next few weeks. The cuts will hit Amazon Web Services, People Experience and Technology Solutions, advertising, and Twitch. This comes on top of 18,000 layoffs already announced. In total, 27,000 jobs have been cut at Amazon in just four months.

Jassy said the decision is due to the uncertain economy. He explained that Amazon wants to lower costs and run leaner. He added that the final list of roles is not finished yet.

Amazon plans to finish decisions by mid to late April. The company said it will still hire in some key areas. Workers who lose jobs will get pay, health insurance for a short time, and job placement support.

Amazon is not alone. Other tech giants like Google, Microsoft, Meta, PayPal, and Twitter have also cut thousands of jobs. For many tech workers, it is a very hard time right now.

Verily Layoffs

Verily, Google’s life sciences and healthcare arm, has announced a major restructuring that includes layoffs and the shutdown of its medical devices program. CEO Stephen Gillet told staff in a memo that the company must make “difficult decisions” to focus resources on its core priorities of precision health, data, and AI. The exact number of employees affected was not disclosed, but the move marks a big shift for Verily, which has spent years building devices like the Dexcom G7 glucose monitor, retinal imaging tools, and clinical study wearables.

Gillet praised the Devices team for their decade-long contributions to advancing healthcare technology, saying their work has left a lasting impact on patients and research. While the program is ending, Verily will continue to support existing tools in active clinical trials, such as the Numetric Watch.

For employees staying with the company, Gillet stressed that the mission remains exciting and important, but acknowledged the transition will be tough as colleagues and friends depart. He urged patience and commitment as Verily narrows its focus. The company says these cuts are part of “deliberate choices about resourcing” meant to accelerate its path to commercial success.

A strange momement...

Microsoft is in a strange moment in 2025, showing record profits and massive AI investment while also cutting more than 15,000 jobs, about 7 percent of its workforce. The latest and biggest wave of layoffs came in July, with 9,000 employees let go, following earlier cuts in May and June. CEO Satya Nadella addressed this paradox in a memo, calling it the “enigma of success”—a reminder that in tech, growth is never permanent or evenly spread.

Nadella said Microsoft is pouring $80 billion into AI and cloud infrastructure this year while shifting its mission from building static software to becoming an “intelligence engine.” He described a future where everyone can instantly access AI-powered research, analysis, or coding help. To make that happen, teams are being reorganized and capital is being redeployed, even at the cost of jobs.

The layoffs reflect a broader trend across the tech industry, where more than 80,000 jobs have been cut this year as companies adapt to AI-driven automation. Nadella thanked departing staff for their contributions but made clear there are no promises of stability ahead. Instead, he urged employees to keep a growth mindset and embrace the “messiness” of transformation, comparing today’s AI shift to the rise of PCs in the 1990s.

Cuts?

Salesforce’s stock is in a tricky spot in 2025. It trades at $242.76 after falling 3.2 percent in the past week. The stock is up 2.4 percent for the month, but still down 26.6 percent this year and 4.1 percent over the last year. Looking longer term, it has gained 61.6 percent in three years, though only 0.9 percent in five. This mixed record shows both hope and worry as the company bets big on AI and new revenue deals.

The company cut nearly half its support staff as AI takes over, saving costs but adding risk. At the same time, it is chasing new government contracts and may invest $750 million in Genesys. Analysts say these moves could reshape growth, but also bring unceratinty.

Valuation checks suggest the stock might be cheap. A cash flow model puts fair value at $282.87, about 14 percent above today’s price. Its price-to-earnings ratio also points to undervaluation. Still, outlooks differ. Bulls see AI and cloud strenght pushing the stock toward $334. Bears warn growth may slow, leaving fair value closer to $223.

In the end, Salesforce faces both promise and risk. Whether it is a bargin or a trap depends on how investors see its future.

Small Block, Inc. Cuts in IL

Date: October 13, 2025
Laid off: 5

These are supplemental layoffs by the finance and insurance firm, attributed to a reduction in workforce as part of restructuring. The scale is small, and these are likely individual roles rather than whole departments or contract losses.

Zeco Systems Inc. (Shell)

Date: October 2025 (4 workers) and December 2025 (2 workers)

  • Total Laid off: 6
  • Note: These are small layoffs tied to changes in business needs. The company is based in Los Angeles but is impacting workers in Illinois. The WARN filing cited business-needs changes rather than contract loss or facility closure.

Compass Group (TouchPoint Support Services) Layoffs

Layoff Date: September 30, 2025

  • Laid off: 165 (82 workers at St. Mary & Elizabeth Hospital, 83 at Resurrection Hospital)

The layoffs are due to lost food service contracts at two Chicago hospitals. Compass Group had earlier begun reductions tied to contract losses, and these represent additional cuts. Some of the roles are being eliminated as the contracts end, rather than redeployed.

Woodstock Christian Life Services (Hearthstone Communities) Layoffs 2025

Company: Woodstock Christian Life Services (Hearthstone Communities)

  • Date: September 30, 2025
  • Laid off: 117

The facility is closing entirely for financial reasons. Hearthstone Communities, a senior living and nursing care provider in Woodstock, has operated for over a century. Attempts to find a buyer or otherwise avoid closure appear to have failed, causing the organization to shutter. The layoffs are not just reductions but part of full facility cessation.

Total Facility Maintenance Layoffs (2025)

Company: Total Facility Maintenance, Inc.
Date: September 30, 2025

  • Laid off: 141

This company is also letting go employees because it lost a contract. It’s located in Wood Dale, Illinois. This is part of a supplemental WARN notice. Total Facility Maintenance had reported layoffs last year as well (41 workers then) and now is planning further reductions.

Diverse Facility Solutions Cuts

Company: Diverse Facility Solutions, Inc.

  • Date: September 30, 2025 (WARN report indicates 276, but company plans point to 191)
  • Laid off: ~191 to 276

The layoffs stem from the cancellation of its janitorial services contract with Chicago Public Schools. Though the WARN notice lists 276 workers being laid off, the company clarified it intends to lay off about 191 employees, transferring many others to a different union. There is also a legal concern: a law firm is investigating whether Diverse Facility Solutions met the required 60-day notice under the WARN Act before initiating the mass layoff. The company provides facility management and janitorial services.

Exit + Layoffs

Company: Capital One Financial
Date: October 17, 2025 (193 workers), and May 1, 2026 (22 workers)
Laid off: 215

These layoffs are tied to a decision by Capital One to exit Discover’s home equity and refinance loan business, which had been part of its business portfolio following its acquisition of Discover. The larger batch of job cuts (193 workers) is set for October 2025, with a smaller group (22) scheduled for May 2026. The company said this is part of financial restructuring and follows a strategic business review of that segment. The transition is expected to reshape operations in that business line.

Essendant and CyraCom Layoffs in Houston (2025)

Hundreds of layoffs are coming to Houston as two major companies downsize their local operations.

CyraCom International, a remote interpretation provider recently acquired by Propio, will close its Houston facility and eliminate 355 jobs beginning December 1. The cuts include interpreters in Spanish, Vietnamese, Portuguese, Arabic and several other languages. CyraCom’s Arizona office will also see about 500 jobs cut as part of the restructuring.

Essendant Management Services, a distribution company, has also announced plans to cut 92 jobs in Houston this November due to business downsizing.

These announcements come after recent WARN Act filings revealed nearly 1,900 layoffs statewide from August through October, with Houston shouldering most of the impact. Both CyraCom and Essendant have not yet provided further comment.

Why Cuts? (windowscentral)

Microsoft has entered its fifth straight month of layoffs in 2025, with just over 40 roles cut at its Redmond headquarters this September, according to the Seattle Times. While smaller than earlier waves — including 6,000 job losses in May and 9,000 in July — the new cuts bring the total to more than 15,000 employees since the company announced an $80 billion AI investment. The latest layoffs affected engineering, product management, and legal positions, and raise questions about whether Microsoft is normalizing monthly job cuts to reshape its workforce around AI.

The company continues to defend the strategy as part of a broader transformation, pointing to declining reliance on certain roles while heavily hiring for AI, machine learning, cloud, and Copilot development. CEO Satya Nadella has described the tension between record profits and the pressure to reduce costs as the “enigma of success.” Microsoft has also rolled out a $4 billion “Elevate” program to reskill workers for the AI era, even as employees face uncertainty and fear of automation replacing traditional jobs.

These workforce changes are not unique to Microsoft — Amazon, Meta, and Google have taken similar steps — but the Redmond company’s consistent monthly layoffs highlight how aggressively it is prioritizing AI and automation over maintaining its existing headcount.

300+ Laif Off

banner just filed notice that 351 workers in colorado are getting cut by nov 5. this came through a state warn filing and yeah... it’s a big hit.

they’re closing a freestanding ER & Urgent Care in Greeley on that same date. banner has over 3,000 staff in northern colorado and over 60K nationwide, so big news...

the affected will get transition help, like priority for other open roles in the system, career counseling, and support services.

at the same time banner is rolling out what they call a multi-year investment plan to reshape their footprint in the region. that includes buying up a primary care network and turning the mckee medical center in loveland into a specialty hospital.

CEO for colorado hospitals said the changes are because of "community demand" whatever that means for him. ER volumes at mckee have dropped 4 years in a row, they’re only using 25% of the beds, and 90% percent of surgeries there are already outpatient.

And, it'll not stop here

RTO & Other Mess

Following a layoff of 9,000 employees globally, Novo Nordisk has announced a new return-to-office (RTO) mandate. The pharmaceutical company, known for its diabetes and weight-loss dr-gs like Ozempic and Wegovy, is requiring all office-based staff to work five days a week in the office. The new policy is set to take effect on January 1st.

The layoffs, which amount to about 11% of the company's workforce, are part of a restructuring plan by the new CEO, Mike Doustdar, to streamline operations, reduce complexity, and save an estimated $1.25 billion annually by the end of 2026. The company plans to reinvest these savings into its core areas of diabetes and obesity treatments. The job cuts, which include 5,000 positions in Denmark, are a response to slowing sales growth and increasing competition, particularly from rival dr-gmaker Eli Lilly.

The RTO mandate is being implemented to "foster a stronger sense of belonging, strengthen relationships, enhance collaboration, and accelerate decision-making processes." According to reports, the company did not have a universal work-from-home policy before, and rules varied by country and department. While the new mandate is a full-time return, the company stated that individual agreements between managers and employees are still possible to balance both personal and business needs.

The decision has been met with criticism from some employee representatives, who were "surprised" by the change, arguing that remote work and a vibrant office culture are not mutually exclusive. This move by Novo Nordisk aligns with a broader trend of companies reversing remote work policies, with some experts suggesting that RTO mandates are being used as a way to encourage employees to quit, thereby reducing headcount without having to pay severance. However, the company's new CEO has emphasized the need for a shift in mindset to become faster and more agile in a competitive market.

Not old Swire any more

Used to be a great company, like a family - they took care of people. Now things turned south, they had three layoffs over last couple of years. The last cut was about six months ago and almost 200 people were got cut from FSOP. I would not trust the management any more, this is different times now and they tell you one thing just to turn around and do something completely different.

September running total for layoffs

Sep12 6am UTC - Sep13 6am UTC totals: 59 layoffs.
September totals (except Sep01): 4697 layoffs, and 279 additions.
Methodology and day-by-day breakdown is in comments.

Reminder: some locations in Pacific received "notice" already, but will still have access for 2 weeks.

Changing Roles and Moving Schedules?

A mandatory shift bid, AI, moving people’s roles, changing up departments (Which can often be a sign of layoffs creeping up), and changing metrics? Some of this helps, but I feel as if these changes are being implemented to make a lot of people voluntarily leave to avoid layoffs. It smells of constructive dismissal/discharge in some form. Maybe I’m wrong. This job has had its pros and cons. I’m sorry to those of you who have to endure whatever Wayfair throws.

Bigger Layoffs Are Coming

After a series of layoffs that happened before Q4, there has been a lot of Kool Aid drinking. Get prepared for the big layoffs to occur in November/December. Management is loading up the workload on agents with expectations of completing tasks by the end of the year. After all of your dedicated labor, be prepared to have the rug pulled underneath you. This is the time to be searching for other opportunities. It is best to jump off the sinking ship and leave the rats behind. It is an unfortunate mess, and it will not change.

Layoffs

Major layoffs coming in the car and mechanical departments. Most car jobs will be eliminated, and TCI jobs will be put in their place. Major yards like north Platte and Kansas will still facilitate car repair with union workers, but smaller outlying yards will have contractors do the work, and this is including locomotive service and inspection.

These cuts will bolster stock prices for the Norfolk southern merger

38 jobs could be cut, community center closing

The City of Colorado Springs announced some measures it is planning to implement aimed at closing a projected $31 million shortfall.

The City said the adjustments will include efficiencies, reductions in workforce, scheduled furlough days, and the permanent closure of Meadows Park Community Center. The changes are designed to maintain the City’s long-term financial health and ensure the continuation of administrative priorities, including public safety, emergency response, and infrastructure services.
