Trimming the mgmt fat in March might actually be the first sensible move

I don't wish job loss on anyone, but it's always the grunts who get sc--wed. Management has been bloated forever, and some roles won't be missed, AI or not. If those of us doing the actual work, for the least pay, can keep our jobs given how tough the market is, I'm okay with it. People with bigger salaries can weather unemployment longer. Most of us can't survive more than a month or two.

Layoffs bug or a feature?

The cover story for layoffs is that the financial incompetence of leadership led to layoffs, but, in fact, the impact of layoffs seems to be a rise in Authoritarian management practices (do this or we’ll axe you, whether you like it or not), which leads one to wonder if that was not always the point?
Foreigners in management coming from corrupt and inbred home countries cannot be expected to understand the drive and spirit that made Silicon Valley unique and powerful, so, in the mockery of imitating greatness, they replace inspiration with the whip?

Integrity/Risk Awareness

Retail branch managers in my city are telling us to call clients on the federal do not call list and if a sale happens on the call, we are to log that we didn’t “lead” with the sale. I helped out at one branch recently and there bankers are being told the same as my branch. Previously when I started working here, the manager would tell us that we are to log bad contact information on the lead and leave notes that it is on the do not call list. We are now told that if we don’t call clients on the federal do not call list and if we log bad contact information that we will be in hot water with area manager. We are told this change is coming from our area manager and it’s been going on for a little over a month now. I do believe it’s coming from above my branch manager because I’m seeing it at more than just my location due to helping branches with turnover. Most recently this area manager is “encouraging” the managers get us to do seemingly unscrupulous stuff with opening accounts dda units and shifting dollars to our area. Is they’re funny business coming from way up top being seen everywhere or is it just area leadership in north Florida? Relatively new to this bank and wondering if I should prepare an exit before staying too long.

Overlapping Jobs Refining PCN vs ICS

I’m hoping someone in management will read this and wonder why we have Refining PCN doing the majority of IT infrastructure, and IcS staff at sites are pretty much useless and do very little of the core business.
It’s the biggest waste of resources at the sites. If you look at the top 2 incentives they implemented ClarOty and SolarWinds are totally a joke. ClarOty isn’t doing anything and ICS management is projecting the benefits. Ask any PCN Team lead they will laugh!
Please help us at the sites!!!

Do Managers and Senior Managers have to contribute now?

As part of flattening the organization, Managers and Senior Managers don’t have duties of people management. Directors are having them now. And thus they are now strictly technical. Do Managers and Senior Managers have to contribute now? In other words, do they now have to work on tasks like others on the team?

My Team Lead clearly used AI to write my appraisal and now I’m convinced he will be replaced by AI.

My team lead, a nice guy but not the sharpest, decided to do my appraisal this morning. As usual, everything was “fine.” Lots of fluff and no real substance, except for one thing. He kept stumbling over words and mispronouncing them.

It was obvious he had no idea what he was saying. It sounded like a seven-year-old reading their first chapter book, except the words were not even difficult. It was honestly embarrassing to sit there and deal with him.

At that point, it became clear that he did not get the position based on performance.

It was pathetic. I understand using AI to clean up grammar or help organize your thoughts, but having it actually write the whole thing for you? No.

If anything, AI will replace low-level managers before it replaces the people actually doing the work. That is crystal clear to me now.

New rules that make no sense

We just got in 4 new forklift batteries … now there is a rule we can’t use the chains to pick them up off the pallet with a forklift to put them on the battery changer! So, home office .. please enlighten all of us on just how are we supposed to do this without a forklift? Let alone putting the old ones in a pallet to ship out ! Between u making our lifts go slower than the floor scrubber these so called safety changes are about the most id--tic changes in the 27 years I have been here ! Maybe home office needs to start working in clubs so they can try to do all this ! Be prepared for a lot more workman’s comp cases since these kinda changes are not safe for the associates !

Finance ops external job posting

Finance ops has an external job posting for a credit and collections analyst. Really? Just months after layoffs? The job description says to resolve billing and payment disputes. Can this not be done by AI or competent management? Does the executive leadership not have any prior operations experience that got this approved? Vz needs efficiency and value. Not more inefficient army building with overlap and chaos which directly caused the need for layoffs in the first place. Does Dan know people are posting external manual processing roles just months after layoffs???

Clothing

Home office .. if u read this ! STOP STOP ordering so much clothing.. it is ridiculous how much clothing we have and how much we have to sell to liquidation . We have a winter sweater that barely sold .. we have over 700 of them between the 3 designs .. WHY ??? We are not a clothing store .. walk into Costco and I bet u don’t see the same looking item with 3 different brands like we do! Bad enough our ladies clothing is awful .. we don’t have room for 4 pallets of the same thing that just ends up liquidated !!

This post is for the upper management

Hey, its me. The person with almost a decade of experience at your company that you laid off Thursday. Its okay, though. I knew. I knew before you knew because I know this company better than you. I've been on the ground floor while you've been on the golf course.

The company has changed. Have you even been around long enough to witness it? Im not talking about the missing "snack budget" or lack of team outings. I thought it was bad when talented people were leaving years ago. In the last year its gotten much worse than that.

Pay closer attention! Are you listening? Do you hear the tension in the meetings? The crackling of constant fires consuming your teams? Endless "Priority" and "No budget for that" rings in your ear like tinnitis.

There is a collective amnesia worsening as the brain drain sets in. Teams start to make the same mistakes that have been made before because there is nobody around who was there the last time it was tried or failed. So they have the same conversations, but this time nobody is left who is brave enough to speak the "quiet part" out loud for fear of "being next". The wrong choice is made this time.

But you're managing how many teams now? Did you even notice? Did you see how the work is rubber stamped before being sent to production? The person who actually took the time to thanklessly review it is gone. They won't be patiently fixing or correcting the HIH hire's issues either.

But thats okay because of AI, right? That'll make up for the skill shortage? And the severe understaffing? A trillion dollars has been invested in it! All the world's digital data fed into it! Its "the future" and "inevitable" or so they say. Uh oh, you ignored that silly SME (subject matter expert) who could actually tell the AI was hallucinating? Don't worry, that SME is gone now! You no longer have to hear about how they had to scrap the AI's work because it was "worse than a junior intern" or "if a human had broken the project this bad they would be fired". You can't even fire the AI because YOUR manager would fire you!

I could go on, but let's be honest: they dont pay you to read, think, or care. Your job is to get the CEO rich by helping pump that stock by any reckless means possible. Too bad its failing. Even with stock buybacks, outsourcing, layoffs, etc. Im sure you're safe, Mr. "Top Dog". What's that? An org restructuring is happening? ...HR would like you to read this prompt to yourself. Thank you for your service to the company.

new leadership and direction is needed

leadership havent evolved in the last 10+ years. For a company that is hyper focused on money making strategy over and above technology strategy, the pivot should be to high margin software. IBM and HPE constantly acquire software companies and are better for it. JC is a one trick pony and every leader beneath are 'yes men' who are only concerned with their next options or rsu allocation. Bring in some fresh blood and wake up ya muppets!

Ops needs new mgrs and senior leaders

My god its nothing but incompetence. Take your wanna be fancy degrees and shove them where the sun doesn't shine because holy moly the amount of common sense added up together doesnt say much. Just give them back because none of you deserve them. Completely sabotaging staff and the whole damn place

Strange AI thought process

There’s a growing misconception that AI "does the entire work. employees are sitting and watching". In reality, AI is helper not full-performer. Still lots of development requires human efforts. Management is pushing towards AI. The problem is once work is done, you will be first one to be thrown out.

The new shiny object effect

Every new manager believes that the only way to show impact is to “start from scratch”. Most of the time they just repeat old mistakes but because they are surrounded by their newly minted hires, no one is there to tell them we tried this 15 years ago and arrived at the same conclusion so you might want to do this and that. This is so painful to watch at times. Forcing out experienced hires to make space for “cheaper” brand new hires only to relish old mistakes and call it new learnings. Not sure if business continuity is any better at Exxon, Shell, and others. And by the way those old mistakes can be very costly.

Separated and still have my laptop. What now?

Last day was 12/19. Completed the separation checklist. Almost.
Turned in concession devices, ID, etc. Except my laptop.
I submitted a request for a box, never arrived. Sent a text to my last manager, they said they would submit another request. That was 6 weeks ago. Still no box, still have this useless junk.
Is this going to affect payment of the 2025 STI?
What do I do with this thing?

When will they learn

How can anyone in management not see how this place is being ran from the top down. If the shareholders are so smart why can they see past the dollar signs. The funny math when it comes to work forces is not working. The pressure test has failed. Time to hire and replace some people. To much work for the rest of the people still here

What union titles will be eliminated this contract

Theres a ton of union titles that still exist. In past company has just surplussed those titles to bare minimums. Example coin collectors, storekeepers. Besides outside linemen do we really need inside techs? Central Office techs literally change cards and replace fibers. The trouble shooting is done by management and when a device needs replacement a CO tech does the physical work that takes 5 minutes.
