What is happening

maybe i am being overly optimistic but that ask srini anything was the realest conversation this company has had since early Legere. Just tell us the truth we’re adults. Good for Srini. But I still don’t know what I need to do to assure I won’t get laid off. Like I know that’s not bulletproof but how can I increase my odds and know if I’m on the right track in my career? Am I moving the ball forward or backward? That’s all I need to know and I’ll stop stressing and drink the kool aid again. Please srini we’re thirsty over here

Oracle - Layoff are Real

I was recalled from vacation last week to notify employees they were being terminated. Then I was personally impacted. These layoffs are real — they accelerate tomorrow (03/31). This playbook is painfully familiar: make a risky bet, prop up the books, shift risk to employees, and then cut the people who built the product. History repeats — Enron, Lehman, FTX, WeWork — different names, same patterns. Sacrifice institutional knowledge and experience for short-term optics and a gamble on leadership’s vision. And too often the cuts disproportionately hit those who are older, outspoken, politically out-of-step, or who challenged the direction.

The result is predictable: silence expertise, reward conformity, and chase mediocrity while pretending it’s decisive leadership. If you care about accountability, transparency, or the future of good work, don’t accept this quietly. Demand clarity on the rationale, fairness in selection criteria, and real support for those pushed out. Lives and livelihoods are on the line — this shouldn’t be swept under the rug.

Laid off

I was let go from my job at Meta, and I now have 60 days to find a new job or I will have to leave the UK.

This morning, I went into the office for what I thought was a normal one-on-one with my manager. I had even prepared a document to update her on all of my projects. She sat down, joined a call, and at first I thought she was about to present something. Then another woman appeared on the big monitor, and I realized this was that kind of meeting.

I was surprisingly calm, partly because my original manager had been laid off the month before, and there had already been rumors of layoffs at Meta.

After the meeting, I had to gather my things and leave the office right away. I turned in my equipment and my badge. My manager even asked whether I wanted to grab any snacks before I left. Of course, I did. Then I went back home.

I messaged people on LinkedIn and then jumped on a WhatsApp call to let them know what had happened.

I came to the UK on a Skilled Worker visa, and HR told me that my visa sponsorship through Meta is now canceled. I have a 60-day grace period to find another job.

So, welcome to my new series: trying to find a job within 60 days.

China Severance package n + 6

Oracle's notable layoffs in China, particularly during 2019, featured a generous N+6 severance package (years of service + 6 months) for many employees. This package, covering over 900 staff in R&D centers, significantly exceeded standard Chinese labor requirements, which generally dictate N+1. However, some employees reported the calculation was capped by local salary regulations.

Gympass Wellhub Active and Charged

If you are in the US and you get RIFed, if you added wellhub then your gympass is still active and you will be charged monthly unless you cancel. One of the great things about Oracle is that you will get no further contact from anyone at Oracle about anything (unless you have peoples numbers). I don't even think your manager is allowed to talk to you. You are cut off pretty instantly, and it is a shock.

I suggest a regular gym routine or some kind of physical activity to help you keep your sanity.

Depressing day

Starting tomorrow at 8:00 AM ET, I will be executing a significant organizational restructuring involving a 20% headcount reduction across our team of 400. Following directives to stack-rank based on organizational impact, I am responsible for conducting the separation calls for approximately 80 personnel, many of whom are close peers and long-time collaborators. This transition comes at a critical juncture, as my org is currently managing a large volume of high-vis projects while operating at maximum capacity. Ugh. Such is life. I fought with myself long and hard before coming here to post this but felt the need to further validate what’s going down. :( good luck to all you brave souls, I wish you all nothing but the best

Not Moving to Cognizant

I was offered the move to Cognizant last week and will be allowing the offer to expire EOD tomorrow. I wanted to put this out there as encouragement for others who are deciding to do the same that you are not alone. To those who are taking it, it is completely understandable and I wish you luck.

Nothing I have received from either Cognizant or FIS in the last week has given me any confidence in this "plan". The whole rollout and execution was dystopian. Clearly well rehearsed for many months, but horribly executed. 10 min to get questions answered with a 3 min notice. A portal to submit questions to that spits back out legalese answers, and does not offer the opportunity to schedule a 1-1 with an HR representative as was promised on the calls. Quite frankly, even if I made the move I would anticipate being back in this same position before the year is out.

There is nothing that I want to do less than work for another company while simultaneously working my tail off for FIS who could not have been clearer that my services are no longer required. Years of service , knowledge, and loyalty lost because of a poorly thought out executive level deal. The existing workloads are already out of hand, and now they will only get worse. The increasing reliance on AI and India gives me no confidence in either company.

It is obviously a risk to simply walk away, but the known alternative is not appealing. I hope this is not FIS' "Titanic" moment, but it's hard to believe otherwise.

Nothing we've been going through has been a coincidence

Every inconsiderate or illogical move, including pushing people close to retirement over to Cognizant, or making seemingly d-mb decisions about who to cut - it's all intentional. It's all about savings without one iota of respect or gratitude toward us. If they can save a minor buck by sc--wing you over majorly, they'll do it.

G-yatri's Reign of Te---r Continues

Paradigm was the best job I've ever had. In about a years time it was turned into the worst. It's depressing.

Paradigm didn't rely on layoffs for quick number pumping. Even during the great recession, Covid, after the incident, my understanding is we never did actual layoffs. Our old leaders would hustle, try to drum up work, dig into the war chest, to make sure we kept operating and innovating and that its people were taken care of.

But we were told, times are tough. Housing is down. We have to tighten our belts to make this work.

A few weeks ago another round, only three people, but all well respected leaders, unceremoniously gone on a Friday. Then, only a few weeks later we have an all company meeting where we meet like 10 new executives and hear about their favorite condiments. Not a good look.

Now we’re told 2% raises company wide.

Meanwhile, all the actual people doing the work are seeing a dozen newer executives running around, making confusing decisions, contradicting each other, stressing people out. They pitch projects but don’t tell anyone the goal. We don’t know who the persona is, how these projects are supposed to make money. I struggle to understand what benefit they actually add.

It just seems like a huge nepotism tree. G-yatri hires all of her old friends, get the band back together. They are all yes men/women. Just do the thing, don’t ask questions.

I’m not an accountant, but they have to cost more than all the people laid off this past year.

And that expense is on top of the probably expensive AI licenses we’re paying for. Tools, that as far as I can tell, aren’t helping us. Hushed conversations in the hallway or at happy hours about how much extra work all these new “tools” are causing. But everyone is too afraid to speak up because they don’t want to be in the crosshairs for the next round of layoffs, so the concerns only bubble up so much.

And then we have to see our company’s LinkedIn page being a shameless commercial for Blitzy. Did we get a deal on our license with them? Where is the 4X development that was bragged about? Their site looks like a marketing guys idea of what AI might be able to do, but I haven't heard any of the product folks saying, "wow, Blitzy really made things better."

Maybe it is. Maybe this is making us so much faster. But we have no idea because communication has been terrible since G-yatri took over.

We’re now extremely top heavy. I don’t know what value these new executives bring. It feels like they are slumming it with us, looking at s-xier tech startups, wishing they were there instead.

And when the market crashes, and it will soon, the do-ers are going to be the ones sacrificed on the altar of “Shareholder” value. Most these AI companies won't exist and the ones that remain are going to start charging the real prices for their licenses instead of the venture capital prices they currently are at.

I don’t know if BFS and Peter Jackson know the level of talent that they have/had at a discount because the Paradigm culture was worth getting paid a lot less for. Well the culture is dying. Everyone has updated their resumes. And if the job market were any better, there would be a mass exodus happening.

We all sit here, on the eve of the financial quarter end, anxiously staring at the all company meeting on our calendars for Thursday. Never knowing what reorg, layoffs, or new executives will be announced. These used to be fun meetings where people got together, saw each other in person scheduled happy hours for after work. Now, the meetings are met with a mixture of dread and disgust.

The Silver Linings Layoff Playbook

If layoffs were executed according to the following playbook Nike would almost certainly be better off.

Let go of employees at the Director level or above who:

  1. Started at Nike post 2010
  2. Have only worked for Nike
  3. Were ‘promoted in place’ to receive their current title

While I’m sure there are a few good leaders that meet the above criteria, as a general rule this cadre of leaders are near useless in our current predicament.

Much like every stock investor is a genius in a bull market, leading when things are going well is easy. These folks have no experience managing through adversity - and it shows.

Nor do they have career experience outside of Nike to draw upon for other ideas. This means they will stick with the status quo: things that worked in the past at Nike that are no longer working now.

Lastly, because they received their titles without undergoing a competitive interviewing process, the scenario surrounding their original promotion bears little resemblance to the environment that they were re-orged into. Despite this, they retain the inflated title.

There must be a few hundred candidates that meet the above criteria, maybe more?

AI is taking our jobs - sooo, billionaires are telling us to be grateful. duly noted.

Aravind Srinivas (CEO, Perplexity) just dropped a blunt take on AI layoffs: most people don’t even like their jobs, so getting replaced by AI might actually be the push they need to build something better.

Speaking alongside rising fears from leaders like Bill McDermott (CEO, ServiceNow), who warns unemployment could surge, Srinivas flips the narrative, arguing AI is unlocking a wave of “mini businesses” powered by tools anyone can learn.

Mark Cuban and Sam Altman agree the shift is real: companies are already cutting roles and doing more with smaller teams. Bottom line: AI isn’t just ki-ling jobs, it’s rewriting the rules, and the people who adapt fastest may end up better off than ever.

OptumRx

I got laid off by OptumRx. I was unhappy with my manager and the unrealistic expectations. My manager treated me poorly from the start anyway but it seems like all my ex-coworkers still have their jobs and have no idea that these layoffs were happening. Is OptumRx doing mass lay offs too? Is OptumRx going to be phased out one of these days? Especially with the new bill?

Why Layoffs?

  • Tech layoffs reflect a shift from labor spending to AI infrastructure investment rather than a simple downturn.
  • The “AI transformation” narrative often masks cost-cutting driven by investor pressure and prior overhiring.
  • Job growth in AI is narrow and does not offset widespread displacement across the broader workforce.

The real story behind 45,000 tech layoffs: where the money actually goes

Recent layoffs across the tech sector are being interpreted through competing narratives that reveal different priorities. Some accounts frame the cuts as a necessary step toward an AI-driven future, presenting job losses and new AI roles as part of a balanced transition. Others emphasize the experience of workers, who are often left uncertain about why they were let go and whether automation played a role. A more critical perspective treats the AI explanation as a strategic narrative that makes workforce reductions appear forward-looking rather than financially motivated.

The core economic shift is a reallocation of resources away from employees and toward infrastructure. Companies are reducing headcount while increasing spending on data centers, computing hardware, and energy systems that support AI development. These investments do not generate equivalent employment opportunities, and the roles that do emerge are concentrated in highly specialized areas. This creates a structural divide in the labor market, where a small group of AI experts is in demand while a much larger group of workers faces declining opportunities.

The effects extend beyond individual companies to broader economic patterns. Layoffs are concentrated in high-cost tech regions, while new infrastructure projects are often built in locations offering lower costs and favorable incentives. Policymakers are beginning to respond by seeking ways to extract value from this expansion, rather than attempting to slow it. At the same time, the emphasis on AI as the driving force behind layoffs may obscure more conventional factors, such as pressure to improve margins after periods of aggressive hiring, leaving uncertainty about whether the anticipated productivity gains will materialize.

Refinery Threat

Chevron threatening to shut down El Segundo and Richmond is giving tremendous hope to decommissioning and remediation firms since there is way too much land to simply turn them into terminals. SJV will be on the accelerated hit list again too, I imagine.

Or maybe Chevron will accelerate the complete move to India and say sc--w you EPA. Bye bye Houston.

Trinity Health Reduces Staff, Outsourcing Non-Patient Roles

Trinity Health is cutting jobs within its revenue cycle department. The healthcare system will outsource these non-patient-facing roles to an external partner. Approximately 10.5% of revenue cycle positions are affected by this change. The exact number of impacted employees has not been publicly disclosed. Financial challenges in the healthcare industry prompted these cost-saving measures.

US Jobless Claims Decline Slightly, Remain Elevated

The number of Americans seeking unemployment benefits decreased last week. The total reached 787,000 claims. This indicates a slight easing of job losses. However, job cuts persist at elevated levels. The overall job market still faces significant challenges.

Severance Math

Ok, let's say they need to fire ~10,000 people to stay afloat in some form or fashion:

With severance, UI insurance, COBRA, and other sundry items, lets say it costs $10K on average. Not just the package, but the actual total cost of firing someone. 10000 X 10000 is $100 million.

This sounds about right, but let's say it is half of that, or 5000/head, or $50Mil.

Do you think these creeps are going to spend $50 million to do the right thing? They will not, because:

  1. They are crooks and creeps.
  2. They have a fiduciary duty to shareholders AND debtholders.

My gut says they will file CH11 as soon as they can get away with doing so.

New York WARN Law Fails to Track AI Job Cuts

New York updated its WARN law to address AI's impact on job cuts. More than 160 firms submitted mass layoff notices. No filings, however, blamed technology or automation for job cuts. Experts believe companies avoid citing AI for legal or commercial reasons. This tests New York's transparency efforts regarding AI's labor impact.
