Thread regarding Xerox Corp. layoffs

Severance Math

Ok, let's say they need to fire ~10,000 people to stay afloat in some form or fashion:

With severance, UI insurance, COBRA, and other sundry items, lets say it costs $10K on average. Not just the package, but the actual total cost of firing someone. 10000 X 10000 is $100 million.

This sounds about right, but let's say it is half of that, or 5000/head, or $50Mil.

Do you think these creeps are going to spend $50 million to do the right thing? They will not, because:

  1. They are crooks and creeps.
  2. They have a fiduciary duty to shareholders AND debtholders.

My gut says they will file CH11 as soon as they can get away with doing so.

@dr shadow redundancy, they have been doing it for years. If you get HR or Security contacting you then they have made something to push you out. Keep everything

The execs compensation is in part based on them needing to make difficult decisions like the layoff of 10,000. Another is company performance, which hasn’t been great.

To do the big layoff while spending the bare minimum (less than OP’s $50M) they could do a set of policy changes such as severance maximums. Some of these have already been done, eg vacation and 401k match payout date.
Then they have a path to improved financials after the layoffs.

Waiting to hide behind Ch11 as a way to implement this kind of difficult decision is just another example of execs not having a brain or spine (or both).

I can hear it now in 2027: “regrettably our ch11 restructuring plan forces us to layoff a significant number of workers”.

Guess what? this kind of chicken attitude contributes greatly to our junk bond credit rating, stock valuation, and bloated processes.

They will make things miserable for all employees, with the intention of a percentage leaving and not having to pay them anything. Then the firing begins, fire some managers and half their teams and combine the rest into a single group and continue until things improve or bankruptcy happens. I've seen this movie before.
