Is Five9 engineering this dysfunctional everywhere?

trying to sanity check something.

I’m an engineer at Five9 and honestly I can’t tell if my team is just dysfunctional or if this is how things are across engineering.

In my team:

Communication is basically nonexistent. Half the time you don’t even know why decisions were made.
Priorities make zero sense. Everything is urgent until it suddenly isn’t, then something else becomes urgent. Also, the roadmap is always changing.
Managers don’t really seem to understand the technical side, which makes things worse.
Code quality is rough. No consistency, no standards, a lot of stuff just feels hacked together.
Documentation is almost zero, so you’re constantly guessing or reverse engineering things.
Architecture feels like it just “happened” over time instead of being designed.

It makes it really hard to do good work or build anything properly.

Genuinely curious: is this just my team or is this the general state of engineering here?

Would appreciate honest answers from people in other teams/orgs.


when will GT FTS reorg?

This organization looks very strange, I mean the domain merger and the fact that VPs report to VP. On top of that, there are strange creations like Tech Mod, a lot of in-house solutions and a lot of lazy engineering dinosaurs in various positions from Sr Dir to Engineer level, on the other hand, the huge layoffs can destsbilize engineering teams and stability of systems/infrastructure for Nike business.


KKR: It’s time to address the "Director" bloat and title inflation.

Let’s be real about the state of the org right now. If KKR is actually looking to trim the fat and keep the talent that matters, they need to stop looking at the IC level and start looking at the middle-management layer.
VMware spent years handing out titles and raises like candy to keep people from jumping ship. Now, we’re stuck with a "Managerial Chimney" problem:
• Mini-Teams: We have Directors and Senior Managers overseeing teams of 5 people. That isn't a department; that's a huddle.
• The Messenger Class: Most of these middle managers have zero technical input. They aren't clearing roadblocks or architecting solutions; they are just human routers relaying info to VPs.
• Jira Policing: When these folks realized their roles were redundant, they pivoted to micromanaging Jira tickets just to look "busy" in the logs.
If cuts have to happen, it should be the people whose only contribution is "status updates." Down-level them to IC roles or let them go. The engineers actually building the product shouldn't be the ones on the chopping block while a Director of 5 people collects a check for being a glorified secretary.
Bottom line: Protect the talent, cut the bloat.


Boeing has been the greatest disappointment

Engineer here, first job out of school. I thought I was the luckiest when they offered me the position. Three years in and I have no idea what we're even doing. They've messed up from every angle you look at it, and the worst part is they're not even trying to make it better. It's like they can't decide between short-term savings at any cost or wanting to be a competitive company. And it feels like they've given up altogether.


Doubled Sabre's engineering workforce

From the COO's updated bio on the website:

"During this period of significant change, he was instrumental in modernizing the company’s operating model—most notably by securing strategic partnerships focused on technology modernization and AI-driven code conversion. These initiatives more than doubled Sabre’s engineering workforce, increased development velocity, and delivered greater efficiency and value to customers.'

You can't make it up.

(Well, apparently you can.)


Engineers should unionize

With AI coming, should engineers unionize? I believe upper management is going to continue to squeeze engineers and with knowledge worker tasks being transferred to AI agents... it makes the work of an engineer procedural rather than design. That's very much like factory work.

I don't see any other way to spread the wealth. The alternative feels like "to get squeezed".

This is exactly what SAP is also aiming for. So when are the layoffs coming and will engineers be a part of that?


Engineering Comp Plans

For any engineers on the board, I have a couple of questions. Don't take offense, they are legitimate questions:

  1. Why can't engineering ever release any projects on time?

  2. Why is anything you do release full of bugs and half complete?

  3. Why are we as a company years and years behind the competition when it comes to full-stack enterprise IT solutions?

  4. Why can we never see a roadmap with anything on it when requested?

  5. Why is there seemingly never any accountability to address failed projects or missed deadlines?

This is by far the worst engineering environment I've ever seen at any company I've ever worked at. Seems to me it's engineering comp plans that need to change, not SCPs.


After making the announcement today that 787 Engineering is moving to Charleston SC. Boeing next bold announcement directly to SPPEA Engineers

which will be truly a classy move on Boeing's part, will be to inform all SPEEA representative 787 Engineers currently working in Everett is that they all will have to reapply to their current job that will end up with a new location having a Charleston SC zip code soon, and if they are a lucky sap to be offered their old it won't include relocation expenses but will come with a reduction in salary.
Yep, nothing new here, Boeing's done this before to quite a number of people.

Sales vs Engineering

There's a lot of bi--hing and moaning about Sales comments on this board.

Perspective:

Without Sales, none of you would have a job. Without Engineering, people would still have a job because Engineering doesn't deliver or do anything. Dell's model is to acquire companies with good but declining products and sell them to its install base - with no plan or skill set to continue innovating or developing these products out further - and keep selling them until there's nothing left. Case in point, EMC products we sell today are the same as they were 10 years ago.

Question? What successful products has Dell engineering developed organically that didn't originate from an acquisition? Name one.


Only manufacturing

If you are salary or overhead, you are at a great risk in 2026 for a layoff. If you do not actually make product you need to be looking for something else.

Our engineers have limited career spans. We do not design anything of interest or significance. Not like we work for Boeing, NASA, Lockheed, and a company where engineers do really interesting and high-tech work. We design electric drills. Boring...

Take my advice and have your resume ready. Get to know people that work at real companies. Be prepared do deal with a layoff.


My guesses for layoffs this quarter...

I think the typical departments will get hit hard again - ISG, CSG, Sales, Engineering, and IT... but I also think Dell is going to start going after full remote employees.

Dell no longer allows remote positions (future positions that is) and all new roles/REQs MUST go to the office, meaning they want all employees to be local to an office, right? Well that won't/can't happen until all remote employees are either laid off or quit.. OR relocate on their own dime. They are going to have to start going after remotes sooner or later and I feel like it's gonna be sooner than later; after the RTO mandate. OR, they will tell remotes that they can either relocate and keep their job, or have bonus's/raises minimized + the already not eligble for promotions/internal movement.

I think a LOT of the engineers, PMs, Managers/directors who were very heavily involved in mav will be let go as well, considering the OG deadline was pushed back a quarter...

Just my guess.


Silent layoffs in Engineering

While support teams is getting axed, engineering is facing even more unethical layoff where all old timers are being humiliated and left with no choice but to resign. RSUs were already gone and now bonus will be majorly given to new people who are lured with big promises. Even time offs are being reduced every year and old timers are made to work like dne** with no accountability to the new people. People who some how trying to see through this are put into impossible situations. Brace for more mad stuff friends if you are still there !!


H1B brings in strong talent, believe it or not

Honestly, Cisco runs on H-1B talent in a very real way—just like a lot of big tech—because it brings in people with deep, specific skills that are hard to find at the exact scale and speed the work demands. These aren’t random hires; a lot of them have strong engineering backgrounds and advanced degrees in areas like software, networking, security, and data. And yeah, it can make things feel more competitive for Americans, but that’s kind of the point: the world isn’t slowing down, and neither is the industry. If you don’t get the role you wanted, you can either sit around and blame the system, or you can level up and come back stronger. That’s the difference between a grown-up mindset and a baby mindset—Cisco (and the people who thrive there) reward the folks who adapt, learn, and keep pushing.
