Economic Indicators Point to Strong Labor Market and Inflation Rise

The upcoming week features several key labor market indicators. April's employment report is expected to show a solid increase in private payrolls and a lower unemployment rate. Other data points include ISM NM-PMI, which should confirm continued economic expansion, and a strong increase in revolving consumer credit. The Q1 earnings season continues with major companies reporting results. Inflation expectations are likely to jump due to higher gasoline prices.

Help me please

Laid off 2 months ago after 28 years with UHG. Devastating! All internal positions I apply for, immediately “they are pursuing other candidates more qualified”. WTH? I’m even applying for job grades lower than when I left & still the same responses.

I’m over 50, was let go as a grade 29, had all 4s & 5s rating every single year. Had a 5th level interview and they chose an EXTERNAL candidate for the role.

Are any employees getting re-hired? Any tips or resources you have?

Any suggestions for companies hiring Optum employees? I appreciate any insight or referrals.

Upskilling Promises vs. Workforce Reality

We went through Cloud Cert Fest and Skill Academy programs with the expectation that cloud training would translate into meaningful internal opportunities and role stability within the bank.

Instead, cloud outcomes remain largely undelivered, while many trained engineers have been impacted by layoffs and organizational restructuring. In parallel, roles are increasingly being filled through external hiring, including engineers from Amazon and JP Morgan Chase.

This cloud cert fest ran by R.B, working in the bank . We all are laid off.
This raises a difficult but important question about alignment between upskilling investments and actual workforce planning—especially when training programs are positioned as a pathway to job security, yet the outcomes tell a different story.
Do DV and GK have visibility into this situation? What is the real status of Skill Academy and Cloud Cert Fest outcomes?

Are you a remote employee ? Get multiple jobs

I am a remote employee and after realizing how cr-p this company is with people more than 4 years receiving the same salary even performing, and all layoffs via cold email, I decided to have 3 jobs at the same time.
I manage them pretty well and have no issues with ANY of them, including Oracle.
If Oracle lays me off, it will impact 30% of my income and not 100%.
Do I care? As much as they care about me.
Do not be stupid. Do not put all eggs in the same basket.

AI-mad Verizon to continue with cuts after CEO's jobs warning Verizon CEO Dan Schulman has now completed the 13,000 layoffs

#AI-mad Verizon to continue with cuts after CEO's jobs warning
Verizon CEO Dan Schulman has now completed the 13,000 layoffs he promised last November, but more could lie ahead. [ Lightreading 📰].

Iain Morris,International Editor,Light Reading — April 30, 2026

Company bosses occasionally praise their employees in public and note the importance of talent. That doesn't quite ring true when they are cutting thousands of jobs, as many are, which might partly explain why lauding AI is now much more fashionable. Attributing job cuts to the solid efforts of the new AI recruit, which bosses have anthropomorphized by saying it is an "agent" or does "reasoning," is even trendier.

It's quite a turnaround from a few years ago, when linking #automation, let alone AI, to job losses was as taboo as nudity in the workplace. No, no, managers frowned, new tech will merely liberate workers from drudgery and provide time for more satisfying pursuits. This was obviously before generative #AI (GenAI) threatened to liberate content creators from creating content so they could spend more time cleaning laptop screens or making tea – until GenAI turned out to be a duff substitute prone to mendacity.

Regardless, investors, if not employees, like the sound of a super-lean and highly profitable company run by AI rather than people. Fearful of missing out on a new tech bonanza, authorities have stopped worrying about the risks and jumped. Suddenly, the hallucinating software developed by a strange cult of effective altruists is being foisted on the world's population by governments and companies of all types. No longer taboo, the linkage between #AI and #joblessness has been normalized in that process.

Into this maelstrom stepped Dan Schulman on October 6 last year, when he was appointed CEO of Verizon, one of the biggest telecom operators in the US (and, therefore, the world). It has been a major US employer, with more than 180,000 members of staff back in 2012. Yet by the time Schulman joined, just 100,000 were left after multiple rounds of restructuring and #layoffs.

Schulman's Verizon shrank even more rapidly during his first three months in charge and already seems to feature more agents than The Matrix. It's "where we have agent-building capabilities," was how he described part of Verizon's AI tech stack to equity analysts on the company's earnings call this week. Another layer "is where we deploy agents," he continued. The cost cutting looks set to go on.

'Never send a human to do a machine's job'

In the last decade, most of the job losses at #Verizon have had very little to do with AI and almost nothing to do with its generative version, which did not even exist until around three-and-a-half years ago, when the company was already down to fewer than 120,000 employees. Even so, another 30,000 had disappeared by the end of last year, including about 10,000 since Schulman took over. In November, he had warned staff of plans to cut 13,000 jobs. All those now seem to have been cut. "We're running leaner with the 13,000 reduction behind us," said Tony Skiadas, Verizon's CFO, on the earnings call.

AI not the answer to everything

Sure, AI has it's place, but it's not a solution for everything. Employees are raising real, valid concerns: rising costs, the need for more flexible work arrangements, job security, and clarity around salaries and bonuses. Redirecting those concerns to AI is just proving, yet again, employee input isn't being heard or valued.

Goodbye IFP

Did you anyone receive them email that was sent out this morning about Cigna getting rid of IFP plans starting in 2027? What does this mean for our jobs? If Cigna is no longer offering IFP PLANS starting 2027, does this mean employees in that department will also be fired? I’m just trying to understand all of this.

Overseas hiring

Citi and other major companies are hiring lot of people overseas! The diff ratio is huge! No one is talking about this. There used to be some controls on overseas hiring. But the hiring pattern now is a huge concern. I believe it is because of H1B restrictions. Either way, You are cooked! So, you don't allow H1B or L1, it's fine, we will hire there. Cheap labor is always the goal for these corporations. Noone cares about the security and the country.

Fire here, hire there, hire cheap! .🤡

AWF - News ate EBAY

This week AWF people will be having meetings with managers starting today and letting them know that their jobs are ending. No notice just ending at the very moment of the meeting. Just be emotional prepared. It's just a sign of the times.

Hagerman Spent $500 Million to Lay Us Off

Article published that Infosys won a GCC (outsource work to India) worth $500 Million. Well done Steve, but about 25 years too late and now wasting the company’s money. Scarier thing is Bill and the board even think this is a good idea. Our jobs are even more at risk across tech ops and data. I’m sure the OC (aka purple ponies) will visit on the corporate jets.

Global Tech Layoffs Peak in March 2026

March 2026 marked the worst month for tech layoffs in two years. Tech firms globally dismissed around 38,000 employees that month. Overall, 92,272 tech workers were laid off between January 1 and April 20. Oracle alone accounted for 30,000 of these job cuts. Meta also reduced its workforce by 200 employees.

Are we done yet?

so now what?

is today the last day of layoffs and tomorrow and thurs are the 'reshuffle the deck', deck of cards that are 2's and 3's and a couple 7's of clubs

russian roulette done, now time for low stakes poker and playing bad hands

what a joke this is, every year, there's nothing left of us, no hope, no ambition, just fear and low energy

all the wind taken out of our sails

that phk celebration gonna be real fun, but then again, the east campus seemed untouched, so I guess ol tech doesn't matter

time to move on if you haven't already........for those that remain, spend all energy on new opportunities.....this place isn't going to let anyone else retire from...those days are over....long tenured.....big red x on back.....just how it's playing out

Enough with layoffs

I have survived so, so many layoff rounds now, and the pattern is always the same. As soon as the last person from the previous round clears out their desk, someone in leadership starts floating the idea of another round. Can we actually have some time to do some work without having to simultaneously worry about our jobs, please?

I might have just saved somebody's job

I quit. I got a comparable offer and I just wanted out. My only regret about leaving Fidelity is that I can only quit once. I'd do it every week if I could. Every day. That's how much I've grown to hate this place. I just hope somebody in my team gets to keep their job as a result. I doubt it, but who knows.

Amazon Finalizes Virginia Layoffs Amidst Hiring Shortfalls

Amazon completed layoffs for 691 Northern Virginia residents as of April 27. These job cuts affect facilities in five local areas. The company also failed to meet its HQ2 job growth targets. Amazon did not add qualifying jobs for state incentives this year. It will not seek a state payment for job creation.

UnityPoint Layoffs Avoid Quad Cities Region

The ugly side of waiting

I've been through several layoff cycles now and every time, as soon as first rumors hit, the office turns into a competition. People stop sharing, managers get cagey, friends watch each other sideways...you get the picture. It's exhausting.

My approach now is simple. I assume my number might come up and keep my options open. I update the resume every month and if it happens, it happens. Being prepared is the only way to stay sane.

Job market is brutal

My son graduated last year with good grades and two internships. He can't get a single interview for entry level roles. Every job he applies for has hundreds of applicants. My guess is half of them are people who were laid off from senior roles including from here and are just trying to get anything. It's just very, very bleak right now.
