It's time to move forward. I understand the attachment to the oil and gas industry—the high pay, the familiar culture, and the stability it has provided for many of us. However, holding on to an industry that is clearly on the decline isn’t a... — read more
Lack of strategic thinking
Been here a few years now and still trying to figure out if there's an actual long-term plan or if we're all just winging it. My old job had issues but at least leadership had some kind of roadmap. This place feels like it's always reacting, never... — read more

Why isn't the large Singapore thread not getting pushed on the Active threads
I guess this site doesn't want anymore conversation on the most viewed and commented thread. But in case you've missed it, it's here: https://www.thelayoff.com/t/16zEvLP3#posts
Why even bother with these damn performance reviews?
The whole PDS process is just theater, a scripted show making us jump through hoops for no real reason. They slap on ratings to justify cuts and PIPs, completely ignoring the real work and chaos we deal with every day. On top of it all, we end up... — read more
12%?!
Not sure if anyone else caught that in their performance review that the MLRP % for MPT was 12% and 6% for OCA. I mean Jesus Christ just say you wanna get rid of people. Good god this place is slimy and spineless.
Let me repeat this again
It's better to be laid off than PIPed. Since they started putting people on PIPs, Exxon has saved millions on severance. I actually hope we have layoffs again, and soon. I don't want to be kicked out without anything if I can avoid it.
Exxon's all about who you know, not what you know
Seen this pattern my whole career. The guys actually turning wrenches and keeping things running never get the good spots. Meanwhile, every supervisor’s kid or college buddy magically lands the cushy jobs. Doesn’t matter if you can troubleshoot a... — read more
Now the question is: how many of us 50+ folks will be PIPed?
I turned 54 this year, and I fully expect to land in NSI, followed by a PIP. I’ve seen it happen too many times to think I’ll be the exception. It would take a near miracle to be overlooked at this point. The one thing I’m at peace with is that I saw... — read more
Engineering Supervisor Ranking Bias
I find it hard to believe that many higher CL 26+ downstream technical roles will exist in the near future. You’ll rarely catch a DH ranking their supervisors below the middle. No, they have to work with them daily… they’d rather have their... — read more
Acquisition Update?
Any progress on the ongoing negotiations to buy PSG with QatarEnergy? I've heard the rationale is to promote Mobil 1 lubricants.
PDS results
Have the results been communicated yet? How many got NSI?
How many Indians can you get for the price of one American?
Ok years ago I was told that they could replace one of me (US employee) with 3 or 4 contractors. My pay was too high and exxon always complained about this. Now lets take and American engineer making 200k a year you could possibly employ several... — read more

have about 270K in retirement accounts, I try to get in 35-40K a year (this includes roth ira and company match) I cant do much more. I did the math if I put in 40K over the next 30 years at a 9% return i should have 9-10 mln by 58. That would... — read more

One Big Beautiful Bill Act impact on LCS and Blue Hydrogen
One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA), signed into law by President Trump on July 4, 2025, has significantly rolled back the clean energy incentives established by the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 (IRA). LCS and other clean projects like Blue... — read more
Just had an Indian bot assigned to my project
I kept an open mind, but it’s bad. The Indian bot feeds work to chatgpt and regurgitates it back. This is our scalable opportunity? What dr-gs are the execs on?
Downstream to Upstream
Will downstreamers who changed roles into upstream have their PA tank?
How can I compete with supervisors like these.
I have moved into a new group and am an outsider. Thew supervisor does not talk to me unless there is something wrong with what I am doing. I get no chit chat or small talk from them. No one else in the group speaks to me as well. Imagine my surprise... — read more
Search is worthless
The intranet search used to be decent. I always used to search “overview” and filter PowerPoint and get a lot of great information on different topics. You can’t search anything now. It either gets hung up or returns junk.

Do Not WORRY about BTC. Ai will replace them soon!
I am a Software Architect that has worked there at spring and ,yes, have trainned offshore resources. The logic behind was = "move all coding offshore where it is 1/6 of the cost" That IS GONE! KUDOS TO THE LLMS! KARMA!
Drowning in work
Exxon's bleeding talent, and the rest of us are swamped. The leadership acts oblivious while we’re stretched thin. Wish I could leave, but sadly, jobs are scarce right now, and that's putting it mildly. "Be grateful you have a job" doesn’t help when... — read more

Not trolling, just curious how people perceve them?
When do NSI / PIP communications start?
Just curious when PIPs start and deadline to have all communications completed.

You gotta move on
I get the attachment to oil work, I really do. The pay's good, the culture's familiar, and it's all some of us have known. But clinging to an industry that's clearly shrinking isn't loyalty, it's self-sabotage. I've watched too many guys spend years... — read more
Retired instead of dealing with the PDP hassle yet again
It's nice to get a dividend check, but I think I may be best off cashing in my Compushare account and move on. Capital gains minimal as the stock hasn't really gone anywhere except for the short post pandemic rally. What are other recent retirees... — read more

Darren will have to retire in 2030 when he turns 65. I’m wondering, is it possible for him to split the chairman and CEO role and then hang on to the chairman position even after retirement?
