I guess nobody's fooled by "cost-cutting" alone anymore

It took a while. The financial turmoil is going to reveal a lot about a decade of corporate failure to strategize. I suspect we'll also discover that discarding human capital, treating people as a low-value input, has always been the stupidest mistake, driven entirely by short-term greed. A textbook example of cutting the branch you are sitting on.

Dow managers will decide...

Dow managers will decide who to lay off based on complex factors like personal disputes, retaliation, maintaining dominance and status, rivalries, and internal power struggles, often stemming from cycles of stupidity , lack of opportunity, trauma, and loyalty, with layoffs often escalating through social contagion and misidentification in social networks.

The only way through this is to be rational about it

I’ve learned the hard way over my career that stressing over a job takes a devastating toll on your health and well-being. We also know performance has little to no impact on who gets laid off. Believing you can curry favor by working yourself raw, only to feel guilty later for not doing enough, helps no one. Do the bare minimum professionally, but don’t go the extra mile. Always be on the lookout for other opportunities. Don’t take anything personally, and stop stressing about office politics or the next potential layoff. Be good to yourself.

Well, I’ve been preparing for a while now

I never expected all these recent decisions and developments to lead anywhere good. I’ve finally landed an interview for a decent job. It’s not much of a pay raise, but it looks far more stable. I hope it works out, because staying here just waiting for things to get worse until the axe falls is a disservice to yourself. I’d recommend putting your own interests first. Maybe the rumors about immediate massive layoffs aren’t true, but they are coming. Oracle has become a hot mess, and we’re the ones who’ll end up holding the short end of the stick.

When the Music Stops

One, two, three
Two chairs—the music stops.
Follow the decree:
One of you will drop.

Central, East, West—
You’re safest in the middle.
This isn’t a test,
Or a well-thought riddle.

Experience used to matter.
Results were once measured.
Now talent’s grown scattered,
And good work? No longer treasured.

Does it end with you or me?
Customers first, the message repeats.
Hello, goodbye—latest casualty.
One less chair—fewer seats.

Did you see the culture survey?
Breakfast and mingle with leaders.
RTO and layoffs underplay
The truth beneath the speakers.

Am I the next to go?
Be cautious of the meeting.
Does anyone know
When comes the next reaping?

One, two, three—
Only one chair left.
You’ve been set free.
You can drop the heft.

Why layoffs don't work?

Have a read in the link below, what are your thoughts on this article? "If overhiring or underperformance was the true problem, /…/ the companies should question their leaders, who green-lit the overhiring and may have failed to develop productive roles for their employees." https://thehustle.co/originals/why-layoffs-dont-work?_bhlid=21e02204eafb215d6fdabdea39d43e71e0027ce2

Affected roles for the upcoming layoffs from Upcoming layoffs

Looking at this article: https://www.indmoney.com/blog/us-stocks/oracle-layoffs-30000-employees-to-lose-jobs, here are the roles most affected by the upcoming layoffs:

Who Will be Impacted By Oracle Layoffs?

The layoffs are expected to primarily impact legacy software roles and overlapping support functions, while AI, cloud, and core enterprise teams are likely to remain relatively insulated.
Roles likely to face pressure

Legacy on-prem software support
Overlapping management layers
Non-core operations tied to older product lines

Roles likely to be protected or expanded

Cloud infrastructure engineering
AI and machine-learning teams
Enterprise sales and client delivery
Security, compliance, and data governance

This points to a reshaping of the workforce rather than a retreat from growth.

Can someone explain how only 2,000 employees (<3%) are being laid off??

The email on 1/29 from the HR boss said: “In addition to those colleagues who chose to participate in the latest Voluntary Retirement Program, we plan to reduce our global workforce by approximately 2,000 roles (less than 3% of the enterprise) by the end of February.”

All the teams I’m aware of were cut between 5-20% on 1/29. So how is it possible that Cigna is cutting LESS THAN 3% of employees? Were there a lot of areas that didn’t have ANY layoffs? If so, which ones?

It seems like more than 2,000 people were laid off just on 1/29. And more layoffs are coming in Feb. based on the email. I don’t get the math unless they’re outright lying.

Likelihood of VSP

Things have been quiet but we know budgets are still tight and headwinds are only increasing. Something is definitely brewing. How likely is it that they offer a VSP to push out more expensive employees? I recall a post here from a few months back that mentioned this being a possibility. Any new thoughts?
