How do overseas Wars effect any U.S.A. oil/gas refineries?

Likely those who follow any news or updates could think twice about ever working at a refinery during times of War. Companies know they will have to bump up the money to meet the rising risks in order to keep employees and have multiple quick back up plans to hire replacements. Might see early retirements.

Ready to retire? At 47?

This week Microsoft announced a voluntary retirement program. While details of the offer have yet to be released, the gist of the offer is that if your physical age and your years of service add up to 70, then you qualify. At the ripe old retirement age of 47, after 24 years of service I qualify. The program is being pitched as “optional” meaning I can choose to take it or not; however, it’s unclear what happens if I choose the “not” option.

I would be lying if I didn’t say that I've lost some sleep over the last day since this was announced. Not out of excitement, but dread. I tossed and turned, questions churning in my mind…."have I aged out of tech"…."do my contributions matter"…."do they think I get paid too much for the work I do"…."will I be able to find another job"…."will I have to sell my house"…"can I afford college for my kids"…..Ahhhhh.

I had always imagined leaving Microsoft on my own terms. Funny enough, this was the language they put in the email they sent, they positioned it as an opportunity to leave on my own terms, but it sure doesn’t feel that way.

I don’t know yet what I’m going to decide, but if you feel like me at all, let’s connect, get organized and figure how to support each other and how to best respond to this unprecedented moment. One thing I know won’t work, trying to take this all on alone, staying silent, and trying to negotiate individually vs collectively. Stay strong, you aren’t alone and there are always other options.

KPMG Reduces U.S. Audit Partner Ranks

KPMG is reducing its U.S. audit partner count. Approximately 100 partners are exiting the firm. An early retirement initiative did not meet its goals. The firm aims to align partner ranks with its audit business. Departing partners will receive financial packages and support.

Microsoft does a VRBP

Same playbook, different reason.

"An estimated 7% of Microsoft’s 125,000-person U.S. workforce, or about 8,750 employees, would be eligible... Microsoft itself laid off more than 15,000 employees last year and began requiring workers in the Seattle region to return to the office three days a week."

Microsoft Offers Voluntary Retirement to US Employees

Microsoft is offering voluntary buyouts to some U.S. employees. This marks the company's first such retirement program. Approximately 7% of the U.S. workforce is eligible. Eligibility requires a combined age and years of service totaling 70 or more. Microsoft is also adjusting its annual employee rewards system.

Layoff indicator: layoffs imminent

Beginning of mass layoffs in January we saw a TON of early retirements on LinkedIn in and ~25 days later we got hit with massive layoffs. Tonight on LinkedIn there’s a TON of early retirements AGAIN. This is an early indicator of what’s about to drop.

St. Clair College Avoids Layoffs Due to Retirements

St. Clair College approved a budget projecting a $5.5 million deficit. Staffing cuts are expected to affect teaching positions this fall. Approximately 37 faculty members are retiring this spring through a voluntary exit program. These retirements will help avoid full-time layoffs this year. However, future funding and enrollment remain significant concerns for the college.

One could dream...

I can only imagine how many people would take a voluntary resignation package. It will never be offered in OT because of assessments done years ago. HR determined the technical debt that would occur would be too much to immediately overcome. One could dream though. The last one was 55 years and older with 10 years minimum tenure.

The IT organization requires structural changes.

Consider starting with voluntary early retirement packages for long-tenured employees whose roles have shifted primarily toward coordination rather than direct output.
Reduce organizational layers, as there is an excessive number of VP and director roles.
In some cases, directors oversee little to no staff, which is difficult to justify outside of highly specialized environments.
Finally, conduct a thorough talent review to identify roles that are more administrative than technical and assess whether they align with the future direction of the IT function.

Poway Unified Cuts Staff, Offers Early Retirement

Poway Unified School District trustees approved staff changes on February 26. Two employees received layoff notices. Seven certificated and three classified staff members were reassigned. Early retirement incentives were also approved. These measures address budget cuts and declining student enrollment.

Package...please?

To the HR and/or legal representatives assigned to monitor this thread...maybe float the idea of an early retirement package option. For example, offer 5 years of age and tenure in exchange for early retirement. I wager you'd get a few takers and thus reduce the burden of another involuntary force reduction.

Curious to see if people requested Early retirement in Spain and now are part of the RIF/ERE.

I was wondering if there are people in Spain who requested Early Retirement but instead ended up on the RIF/ERE list and simply getting the RIF/ERE Package instead of the Early Retirement package. I think Oracle abuses the fact that people conform the Early retirement program and are getting fired with a much lower payment.

Is early retirement really bad?

I'm asking because my dad, who's been having some serious health issues, is refusing to consider early retirement because it would be - as he said it - a huge financial hit compared to waiting out retirement. Is this true? I have a feeling he's just a workaholic and is willfully ignoring his health because of it. He works at FIS.

Utah Layoffs Continue - KUER to cut 8 employees

PBS Utah andKUER laid off eight employees. Six staffers were from PBS Utah, and two were from KUER. This action followed the rescission of federal funding for CPB. The stations faced a roughly $3 million revenue gap. Five additional PBS Utah workers will retire early.

Eisp will be the regular on the associates side in march

Sounds pretty sure thing there will be a regular eisp in march for union side.Pretty much after the frontier communication merger is over.Sound alike it will be across board to all groups but with limited head count. Not to say if an area has some more people in one location that want it yet not so many in another they can’t shuffle it around under that director .But no way if they ask for 2 they let a whole gang leave just not sensible !Good luck 2026

Is it finally time for an ER?

The argument AGAINST any ER was that in the past too many senior people took them and lots of tribal knowledge walked out the door.

Now with the company focus on AI and that AI should have absorbed a good chunk of that knowledge is now finally the time to get rid of a lot of the expensive folks that have been around forever?
