Verizon Axe Man?

Is this the man who'll axe 15,000 jobs at Verizon?

Alfonso Villanueva joins Verizon as Executive Vice President, Chief Transformation Officer in two days.

Nov 18, 2025, 8:28 AM

Verizon adds a new boss to its team as the company is about to undergo serious changes and thousands are about to be laid off.

His name is Alfonso Villanueva and starting November 20, he'll join Verizon as Executive Vice President, Chief Transformation Officer.

What's his role?

A Chief Transformation Officer leads a company's major change initiatives, guiding shifts in strategy, operations, technology and culture to improve performance. This role focuses on aligning teams, processes and long-term plans to ensure the organization can adapt and grow.

Recently, we told you about Verizon's plans to axe 15,000 jobs and close 200 stores, and the process could start as soon as this week. The Big Red carrier also has a new CEO – Daniel Schulman – who has recognized that the carrier can no longer depend on continual price increases to drive revenue. Verizon has lost customers in recent times, and the company is now moving to greener pastures. The goal is to reduce expenses by shifting its focus.

Personally, Villanueva brings more than twenty years of global leadership experience in strategy, corporate development, transformation, data science and innovation within major technology and financial organizations. His background includes senior roles at PayPal, where he oversaw strategy, corporate development, data science, analytics expansion, venture investments and numerous key initiatives.

Earlier in his career, Villanueva was a Senior Partner at McKinsey & Company, where he led the firm's Telecom, Media and Technology practice across the Asia-Pacific region, so he is definitely suited for his new position at Verizon. He also served as Chief Innovation Officer at SingTel, contributing to the launch of its digital division and venture fund.

It's time to sharpen things

Verizon says it is reorganizing several major teams under Alfonso Villanueva to sharpen its digital infrastructure and improve how the company operates. The new Transformation Organization will take on long-term projects tied to strategy, technology and day-to-day efficiency, with teams responsible for strategy, data and AI, and supply chain now reporting directly to him.

This is only natural, as anyone would want its company to streamline decisions, cut complexity and focus resources on areas that can improve customer experience and support future growth.

No more price hikes?

This is the main question: will your Verizon bill stay the same after all this changes? I sincerely hope so.

Verizon should take this moment as a real chance to break the cycle of relying on constant price hikes to boost revenue. With Villanueva leading the Transformation Organization, the company has the tools to focus on efficiency, better service, and smarter investments instead of passing costs onto customers.

Stock Together Gone

Has anyone else noticed “stock together” is now gone from “your total rewards” page?

Furthermore, according to the last non-voluntary severance documents, they paid you a prorated amount of your stock units.

That would equate to 83% of THIS years stock award you will get to keep. The rest for the following years will be forfeited.

As an outsider looking in...

I have to say, the leadership at Verizon has done some UTTERLY stupid things. Yet nothing happens to them... For example this Frontier debacle. Buy Yahoo/AOL? Really? Blue Jeans? No one even knows that that is? Why buy Blue Jeans when Zoom, MS Teams, and Google Chat were already well established? Just d-mb...

Really bad decisions and the employees are left with the fallout. Mr. Hans gets his golden parachute... just like those before him.

Dan is simply using Elon's model of slash and cut (e.g. Twitter/X). The problem that Dan doesn't understand is that an application only has so many facets. A network the size of Verizon is extremely complicated and can't be compared to a phone App, but he doesn't care. He's a short-timer.

Best of luck to you people. The job market is good if you live in Texas. If you don't, it is more challenging. You'll find something but maybe not at the pay you're currently making.

The company is done with layoffs

This place was silent before the layoffs and now it's full of unsubstantiated rumors.  You folks are tone deaf and have analytical skills of a toddler. I'd say there is 99% chance company is done with layoffs.  Even if they had plans for more layoffs in December, my guess is that they are scrambling to cancel them.  The winds in DC have shifted.  The entire country has shifted.  They are in the damage control stage now.  You don't layoff more people in the country on the verge of recession and in the midst of losing so many votes. You on the other hand give them some perks back which they have started doing.

VCG Update

I work in one of the VCG departments. I can’t share specifics because we were told to keep this private. But SDs and ADs were pulled into a meeting with their VP and notified their teams are all safe. Similar meetings are happening all across the org this morning so you should likely be getting an update soon. If you don’t hear anything that might be a bad sign…

Network SVP's Bring in the "Org Doctors" - Guess We're Sick

So the big "integration" of the Network orgs is going just super. The two SVPs who now run the combined mess apparently can't figure out what to do with us. Heard through the grapevine they just hired a big-name consulting firm to "evaluate the organizational design and operating models."

The kickoff meeting was yesterday. Feels familiar, right.

This seems to be the classic move when leadership doesn't actually have a plan. They pay a few million to a bunch of people who don't understand our business to come in and tell them what to do. The word is they're going on a "listening tour." They'll probably make a bunch of pretty charts and graphs that basically say we have too many people doing overlapping work.

It looks like a way to get cover for the cuts they already wanted to make. Now they can say "the data suggested" we need to streamline. The whole thing has that distinct passive-aggressive vibe. Instead of just making a tough call, they're bringing in a third party to do it for them. It's like they ordered a pour-over at a coffee cart and then asked the barista to taste it first to make sure it's good.

Maybe I'm just being cynical. An outside perspective could actually spot some real inefficiencies, I guess. But let's be real. This is likely just the first step. If you're on a team that's been a pain to get resources for, or your projects have been in "wait and see" mode since the SVP shake up, I'd be updating the resume.

This is usually how it starts. Heads up.

GNT Thread

I work in GNT, below is what I’m hearing as of 10:30EST on 11/19. Please share what you are hearing in the comments.

  1. If your AD is getting cut, your ED will notify your AD first thing tomorrow morning, and then notify ICs on the AD’s team. Depending on your ED, they may give the AD the option to call ICs if the AD would like to make those calls themselves.
  2. If your AD is not getting cut, they will get a list after 5pm today and they will start making calls at 8am tomorrow. They may not send calendar invites, so don’t infer anything from that.
  3. Once everyone is notified, your AD (or ED if your AD is impacted) will set up a call with the survivors.
  4. This isn’t just layoffs, it’s also a major restructuring. Markets will be merged. I’m hearing that there will be restructuring/reorganization beyond markets being merged, but I haven’t heard any details.

This su-ks. It has been poorly managed. I’m sorry for everyone who will be impacted, and I’m sorry for survivors who are already spread thin and will be expected to take on inhumane levels of work. Each one of you deserves better than this. Be nice to your colleagues, give everyone a little extra grace, and make sure you have everyone’s contact info on your personal phone.

Uh Oh… The Numbers Are In, and They’re Screaming LAYOFFS!

Those earnings calls just dropped and… WHEW. If you thought things looked “meh” before, baby, we’re about to enter the Ugly Season™. ANOTHER round of LAYOFF is creeping up like a bad jump scare, so please — do NOT get too cozy in that ergonomic chair.

The corporate Titanic isn’t just sinking… It’s speed-running straight into the iceberg, Kmart style!

So instead of whining, here’s your survival kit — Update that dusty resume. Polish your LinkedIn glow-up. Tap your network like your life depends on it — because it might

Move FAST, fam.

Winter is coming… and so is HR.

Long Term Incentive stock bonus - is it real?

Can anyone confirm or deny if they actually got it? I thought only senior leadership and people managers got raises or bonuses last year and this year? It's going to be hard to keep ANYONE on long term let alone the talented people if there's another year with zero extra compensation for 2026.

What a strategy!

Saying “the strategy is working” feels almost like a joke. Illumina’s board has made a string of questionable decisions — approving the Grail acquisition despite clear EU regulatory risks, then later giving in to activist pressure and spinning it off at the lowest possible value. They brought in a CEO from a company with a decade-long track record of minimal innovation and stagnant growth. Now the focus has shifted to aggressive cuts in both capex and opex, trying to make margin expansion the only story to sell in the absence of real growth. RIFs have practically become an annual event.

Given all this, calling the current strategy a success is hard to take seriously.

How bad company has become under new Mckinsey CIO

It has become prisoners of Mckinsey. Mck folks have more info than employee. on an average there is 1 (employee) to 10 McK person in meetings.. think if McK people charge 400 an hr. how much they are minting. I am sure Mr CIO gets the kickback. This company is going to go down.

Vena's ego

Seems like this merger is only to satisfy Vena's ego. He knows he has to fire people and he is still making lifetime employment deals with the unions. He just wants to get this merger through to be recognized as "the first person who connected both coasts with rail". He will then quit like Boris Johnson had to quit after Brexit. He will be known, but at what cost?

Unfortunately there will be more in 1Q 2026

Its not over... even for those that survive this round. Keep your resumes and profiles updated and possibly, start looking.

Dan is the true hatchet man and only cares about the bottom line. He's gonna squeeze that extra $0.50 per share out come he-l or high water.

Stay strong people...

Citi wants desperate people as a preference.

Overall, being let go may be a blessing in disguise. Citi does not want people who WANT to be here but rather people who NEED to be here. People need a job that goes without saying after all you gotta pay the bills. Citi though, wants people who are really desperate like really lean on the insurance. This way management has more increased leverage against you. They can squeeze in the long hours all the while strongly insinuating to not make a big deal about it after all “you really need this job, so don’t rock the boat. How’s that insurance working for you that you really need.” Its always a tongue in cheek comment that’s uncomfortably laughed at, at the time, but the implication is still there.

There’s a mental formula that’s assessed I believe. The more kids you have, the more dependent you are on insurance, the more bills you have…..the more “they got you right where they want you”. The pressure can really be applied. Usually summed up with berating you in public on team calls so that the others can see and know to step in line or else.

I’ve been in 5 different teams over the years and have cycled through 9 different managers. Two of them were really awesome but they too saw the systemic toxicity and left to go elsewhere. The other 7 managers stuck around where they can thrive and their skills (bully tactics) are appreciated and leverages quite readily.

Dan and his brand (a special poem)

Dan sits high in the tower of glass,
Counting figures, trimming mass.
A whisper travels down the line
“Another round… this time it’s mine.”

He speaks of progress, polished and clean,
Of AI’s future and a workforce unseen.
Two years back he warned the crowd,
“It will leave many jobless,” he said out loud.
Now here he stands, the prophecy man,
Not stopping the storm..he is the plan.

People who built the network’s frame,
Names and faces..now numbers, just the same.
Their keycards flicker, the screens go black,
But profits rise, and no one looks back

Dan calls it efficiency, a modern shift,
But to those he cuts, it’s a stolen gift..
Security, dignity, years of sweat,
All erased in a corporate reset.

And when the machines finally hum in place
Where voices once filled a bustling space,
Maybe Dan will stand alone and see
That progress without people is poverty.

For a workforce falls not loud, but quietly
In email threads, and HR calls,
While a man in a tower signs and enthralls.

History won’t ask about stock or demand,
But who remembered the hands that built the brand.
And someday, far beyond Verizon’s span,
They’ll tell the story of a man named Dan
Who knew AI would hollow the land…
And led the march of the unemployed band

Crystal Ball and SOLV layoffs

The reality of SOLV financials is gruesome. Revenue just north of 8 billion. Debt north of 5 billion. Bryan is a grossly incompetent and overpaid clown but he was dealt a bad hand thanks to Mike Roman. How 3M saddled a HC spin less than 25 percent of the original company was a master play in financial engineering.

Even after the only smart move Hanson could do in spinning off Filtration, his card deck is full of low cards. No aces of trump left. He's being pressured by a rich guy who may not live out the next four years of the "Solventum Way" given he's already 83.

The poster who wished SOLV had never been spun off is right. As bad as 3M is being run, at least the stock price has doubled under Bill Brown.

If you are still working at SOLV and see things differently, please pass the gummies. The layoffs will accelerate and not just be a Frank Shirley Christmas bonus special. No way can Bryan grow the top line when he's obsessed with cutting costs. The one good chance HCBG ever had of being special died when Bryan listened to the guy on the yacht instead of going all in for growth.

Meanwhile, cousin Eddie is getting the long desired management position he's always wanted, reporting directly to Heather. The two would make a great tag team in the WWF of overpaid and overweight execs.

Net earnings of $19b isn't enough?

It's all about bumping the stock so the execs get their "rewards"

Given hatchet man has been on the board for 7yrs he deserves as much "credit" for the stupid cr-p that's gone on than anybody.

Now he comes to save the day? It's all about the Benjamins, hatchet and his buddies will make serious bank while many people have their lives close to being ruined.

Good luck to all getting the "hatchet" on Thursday.

Nokia wants to cut 427 jobs in France

"According to our information, Nokia France wants to remove 427 jobs using the collective conventional termination procedure. According to a union source, this represents nearly a fifth of the workforce, which amounts to about 2 300 employees at its sites in Massy (Essonne) and Lannion (Côtes-d’Armor)."
