I'm out of stress

These past few years have been a wild ride, and this place has gone so far downhill that I can't even work up anxiety about being laid off anymore. Sure, I'm vaguely worried as the job market is brutal, and the economy is shaky, but I don't have the energy or the attachment to this job to really panic.

What constant cuts really mean

A healthy company hires when it needs to and keeps people when they're doing good work. A failing company cuts over and over, calls it restructuring, and pretends things are fine. We've been through how many rounds in the last few years? Certainly too many. That's not a sign of a strong organization.

Every Expat job at Aramco comes with an expiration date

The fact that HR doesn't tell you that before you come doesn't make it less true. If you took the job expecting to make it to retirement, I'm sorry, but you are a fool. If you think the quantity/quality of the work you do will save you, then you are a double fool. The last big round that management did back in 2020 doomed entire areas of the company, and I'm sure the next one will be just the same if not worse. Sadly, management is clueless when it comes to knowing who does what, and good people get the boot right along with the bad. Some companies learn the easy way. Some companies learn the hard way. On the other hand, Aramco never, ever learns.

I’m really hoping Thursday finally puts an end to this whole thing

There’s only so much we can take mentally, and people are already stretched thin. We need a break, a real one, and it should be at least six months without constantly worrying about layoffs. Otherwise, I genuinely think people are going to start breaking down. This isn’t normal, no matter how much they try to make it seem like it is.

What two decades taught me

I spent a long time at Synopsys and I learned one thing above all else. No one is safe. The people who thought they were indispensable got cut just like everyone else. You are an at will employee which means they can let you go whenever they want. Job security is a myth. If you're smart, keep your resume updated and your network active.

700 jobs gone

Erased due to AI. Although I call bullsh-t. It's not AI. They just want to get rid of as many of us as they can and they're using the latest available excuse. AI creates more work than it saves. I know, I've been dealing with its mistakes for a while now. If AI is really the reason, then this place will go under sooner than anybody thinks.

Health insurance

What's the situation here when you're laid off? I have a kid who needs regular prescriptions and I can't afford to lose coverage. When I was let go from my old job, COBRA let me stay on the company plan but I was paying the full premium plus two percent, which was not cheap. I'm hoping there's a better option here.
