Any updates on Edmonton move?
Great Company - Actively helping you get out the door
This is a great place to work and has such a bright future ahead with Transformation well underway. It is so great, that we have had over 400+ employees quit on their own, so far. It is expected that at least 50% + of the Calgary campus will quit or leave in the near future. End result = lower cost of moving.
Not only does the company recognize it, but they embrace it! There is an ICN (former NAP) event coming soon, titled "Head Shots". For only $7.50, they will get a photographer to provide you with a professional Head Shot, perfect for an updated LinkedIn Profile so that you can look amazing as you browse for your future new Job (somewhere else...).
We are so effective in creating a toxic workplace that most people want to leave now if they haven't already... To sweeten the deal, they will help you "look" your best for that new job. The final cherry on top, they are so generous and now offering EARLY relocation options to Edmonton. So thoughtful and considerate.... Wonderful. Bravo.
Early move to Edmonton?
To make the transition smoother for employees and out of the kindness of their hearts, the MC is going to let Calgary people move to Edmonton early. How thoughtful and considerate of them.
I’m sure it has nothing to do with growing concern about number of Calgary employees who are actively looking to find a different employer in Calgary before 2028 comes around… No it must be how much they care about us!!!

Over/under on 2028 move?
Will hq actually move to Edmonton or will they chicken out?
And if move, who says delayed beyond 2028?

Any execs who like move to Edmonton?
Are there any Imperial executives who actually think a move to Edmonton is a great idea?
Accelerated Timeline for the Move?
Any insight into if the building challenges could lead to an accelerated move to Edmonton? Ex. Can’t build a building on-site and therefore Imperial decides to simply lease/buy an existing vacant building downtown Edmonton? I have no legit intel suggesting if this is a valid concern of not.
No to Relocation
Heard from 2 independent sources (i.e. Supervisor and above) now that the number of people not opting to relocate to Edmonton is much higher than what Management anticipated. It will be interesting to see how they handle this!!
Case for Change
How does XOM reconcile the narrative of "we need to collaborate and work next to each other" with the design to have remote support teams staffed with people who have no industry knowledge or communication skills? I don't question the case for change but its hard for me to see how moving professionals to Edmonton fixes anything when we already can't set up customers or pay vendors.
Edmonton
So it seems that the majority of folks are planning to fake mobility to see what they are offered, even if they have no intent to move. Is this the play? If I declare immediately I am not mobile, and seek immediate severance, will I be severed sooner than if I wait to see? I can't wait to GTFO.
The “advocacy office” is just the C-Suite
“Edmonton for thee ; not for me” . Has anyone asked the MC directly if they are moving ? It would be very awkward if someone did . Just sayin’. Whelan never left Calgary during his Houston grooming assignment either .
Considering the move BUT…
I’m considering accepting the move to Edmonton. My spouse doesn’t work, I don’t have family ties to Calgary, and my kids are young enough (with another on the way). I have enough savings to last me a few years, so the main issues I’m juggling in my head are:
- We were told future expat assignments will be significantly reduced.
- Imperial employees will only work on Canadian asset related tasks (no global projects or global roles.)
- Anyone in Canada working non-Canada projects will have their role eliminated.
- Principal and Senior Principal roles will be shifted to Houston and no longer available to Imperial employees.
- US expats will continue to come to Canada and take senior leadership positions at sites and any Cat.1/2 projects.
The entire charm of working at IOL was the fact that you had a “career” and would progress through the career with the sky as the limit. A high performer could end up working global initiatives and ultimately could even become a VP at Exxon. Now, there is a limit… and it’s sub- principal level (which isn’t super high to begin with). What motive (other than bi-weekly pay) do I have to stay with imperial?
Please tell me I am misunderstanding this? Have we become secretaries/admin for Houston and Bangalore folks? If so, F-ck this company - I refuse to drop my potential to their level.
Edmonton home prices to jump while Calgary drop
Get ready to overpay for a house in Edmonton and have a tough time unloading your house in Calgary. The number of people moving is enough to temporarily change prices. Good luck losing when you sell and then being underwater when ypu buy!
Want to work in a refinery every day?
Key point missing is where this building at Strathcona will be given there’s really no excess office space.
You will likely be in a blastproof building (like the current office building) and subjecting yourself to questionable air quality for the remainder of your working life.
Also refinery work cultures are a beast of their own, many in bad ways.
This the life you really want… in Edmonton?
Life in Edmonton
Anyone knows already if they are willing to relocate to Edmonton?
I've never been there so I have no idea how it stacks up against Calgary.
I've head good things, apparently their Hockey team is pretty solid too.
