Thread regarding Imperial Oil Limited layoffs

Life in Edmonton

Anyone knows already if they are willing to relocate to Edmonton?

I've never been there so I have no idea how it stacks up against Calgary.
I've head good things, apparently their Hockey team is pretty solid too.

Edmonton is definitely worse than Calgary but if you're considering it and haven't been let go, you probably don't have much choice. It could be a tent in the middle of a hay field and you would still have to go. Make it work.

I've lived in both cities with the company and Calgary feels a bit more modern. Edmonton just feels a bit stuck in time. Also there's no Chinook so the long winter and snow pile is more depressing. Food scene is less exciting than Edmonton.

Anyone who chooses to follow this garbage company to Edmonton will be because they have no other option.

Enjoy buying a house in YEG, training your Indian replacement for a couple years after the move, only to be laid off with zero job prospects and no O&G corporate network to speak of….oh and a side of cancer from working at a refinery

Edmonton is an absolute downgrade vs. Calgary. Ugly, brown, cold, smelly. No one chooses to be an Edmontonian. Just embarrassing.

Imagine letting your current employer, who openly despises you, dictate where you and your family live for the rest of your career LMAO

Do not listen to those who chose to live downwind of several refineries and other industrial plants. Do not live in Sherwood Park.

Sherwood Parker here- don’t worry, spending every day on refinery property will give you cancer no matter where you live.

We have significantly lower property taxes than Edmonton, Strathcona County heavily subsidizes activities in town like kids sports because they are rich from oil revenues, we have better services than Edmonton (ex; snow clearing, garbage pick up), it’s a 10 min drive to Scona refinery, Elk Island school district is the best in the province (all the schools in Sherwood Park are awesome), lower crime rates, lower traffic, fewer homeless, tons of stuff for kids, and you’re East of the city so the sun is behind you and not in your eyes both on the way into work and on the way home.

Don’t listen to these fools, come join us :-)

IMOEdmonton has better restaurants, cultural events, festivals, etc. but it’s flat, cold, brown and dirty (except the river valley which is really nice for many different activities). Real estate is significantly cheaper in Edmonton. I have lived in both cities and they both have their pros and cons.

If you go, don’t be an id--t and live in Sherwood Park. Live in SW Edmonton.

Blue Collar City
A lot more left wing
Sc-mmier in general
Pollution from the refineries has rather high rates of asthma in sherwood park (downwind)
Can’t see the mountains
A lot more street gangs
The river valley is pretty I guess.
