Approaching retirement, should I unofficially volunteer for severance?

I'll be eligible to retire in early 2027 and Finance is in the early stages of a reorg. I have 20 years with Shell and am age 50+, so my pension will likely be bridged if I get let go before I hit my early retirement numbers.

Should I unofficially tell my line manager that I'm happy to package out? What are the downsides to making this declaration upfront?

Oracle Layoffs Spark Employee Conflict Over Compensation

Oracle laid off approximately 20,000 employees globally earlier this year. Former workers are now disputing the severance terms and forfeited stock grants. Many lost significant unvested equity, with one employee losing nearly $1 million. Concerns also include WARN Act protections and remote worker classification. Oracle reportedly declined to negotiate better terms despite employee petitions.

Here is to find real number

@bc There is a docu-sign package with multiple pdfs where associate who is impacted have to sign. This is an agreement terms and conditions to get the severance pay and benefits. Like I will keep things confidential, I won't go to media, court etc etc.

Unless associate electronically sign the agreement they wont get severance benefits ( like 6 months of pay, 401k vesting, prorated bonus etc. )

This docu-sign pdfs has one file which they have to give list of people ( not names or a#, but title, role, level etc. ) who were part of RIF and their ages. It is a legal document to comply with the law that firm did not do layoff of people due to their age, this is becase of equal opportunity employer law. That list is the only real place you can find number of associates impacted.

Are Companies Using RTO Rules to Fire People With Cause and Avoid Severance?

A Reddit post in r/bell claims that Bell has been firing employees “with cause” for not returning to the office three days a week, allegedly with no severance and no prior warning.

One commenter, who says they were terminated, argues that this is unfair because they were working from their designated office two days a week plus another Bell office on a third day most weeks. They also claim they worked more than the standard 37.5 hours per week and had strong performance reviews.

Their main argument is that, while companies can set return-to-office rules, terminating someone “with cause” should normally require progressive discipline first, such as a verbal warning, written warning, suspension, and then termination, unless the behavior qualifies as severe misconduct. They argue that simply not being in the designated office three days a week, or “coffee badging,” should not automatically count as severe misconduct unless the employee is also failing to work their required hours, which could be considered time theft.

Overall, the discussion is about whether companies are using RTO enforcement as a way to terminate employees without severance, and whether missing office-day requirements should legally or ethically justify a “for cause” dismissal.

Size of the list

If you’re over 40 and you were affected, you will be receiving a list of those included in the layoff and a list of those not laid off. Not with names, but with titles and characteristics. It would be interesting to hear how many associates are on your layoff list.

Here’s what should be in it:

Mandatory OWBPA Disclosure (for Employees 40+)When a reduction in force (RIF) involves two or more employees and a severance waiver is requested, employers must provide a written document containing:The Decisional Unit: A description of the specific group, class, or unit of employees that was considered for the layoff (e.g., "all employees in the Accounting Department").Selection Criteria: The eligibility factors or criteria used to determine who would be laid off and who would be retained.Job Titles and Ages (Selected): A list of the job titles and ages of every individual in that decisional unit who was selected for the RIF.Job Titles and Ages (Not Selected): A list of the ages of all individuals in the same decisional unit who were not selected for the layoff.

Query on IBP Eligibility for Employees Let Go Mid-Year

Reaching out to those who were impacted by layoffs last year, especially from non-sales roles.

I understand that employees who were let go in February received 100% of their IBP, and those impacted around September/October received about 75% of their IBP.

Can anyone confirm whether employees who were let go around the June/July timeframe received any IBP payout along with their severance?

Thanks in advance.

Laid off today

Alright guys I’ll give y’all a real post. I was an SM in wealth and got laid off today. I know you guys like to hate on SM’s but seems like a lot of us got hit. Meeting was put on my calendar super early this morning as a 1-1 without any context. Been here for 10+ years and for severance I got 6 months, prorated bonus, PTO paid to cash, and shares cashed. My manager was visibly shaken up and was like a robot reading off a script just emotionless and monotone which was very unusual. Was told to take the rest of the day off and don’t bother coming into the office through the end of the month which is my last day.

It su-ks but I was already interviewing elsewhere which I’m stoked about the severance and all the payouts.

For those affected, just know you are not alone and this is just how “at will employment” works. I hope you all bounce back quick and enjoy a little time off to recoup. Or at best find another job and enjoy the dual income.

RIFs

I don’t get why there are so many trolls here. Why would someone in their right mind share their name, supervisor, or personal information just to prove whether something is real or not? Why risk jeopardizing their severance or employment situation just to satisfy random people online?

To the trolls, please stop. People’s lives are being impacted here. If these reports are true and people are seriously being affected, I genuinely wish you all the best. No one wants to lose their job.

Wealth platform

Squad lead here

Long time fidelity. Got 12 months severance, holidays paid out to cash and prorated bonus.

Was asked to keep it to myself but fu-k that sh-t, I hate how they broke the news so I don't care.

Multiple scrum master in my previous role got impacted as well.

Impacted BU based on what I heard:
