I'm curious who decides which employees to stay or leave? My manager got laid off during the previous round in 2015. He told me he doesn't even know who would get laid off in our team.

Months ago when I heard people said it would be 2-11 and it became exactly true. Anyone heard of the scale? I heard it will be greater then 1/2 and it's in WD, not HGST.

Google says WD has $5 billion in cash. I don't understand - why lay off very talented professionals, some among the top in their field, when the company has so much money? Does anyone know? Thank you.
