Based on the interlocks so far, WD seems to be better at operation and HGST better at R & D. In both cases, the traditional HDD will be replaced by SSD. In a sense, leaving the HDD industry now is definitely better than 2-3 years from now.

I think the original poster meant as an individual it's not a bad idea to get out of the HDD industry now.

Who leave the industry - you? Companies when faced with product obsolesance should maintain and take advantage of their scale and great functional teams to move into new product categories - not downsize to oblivion.
