Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

“ American Telephone and Telegraph “ 🇺🇸

The only thing “American” about the company is the name, because it sure does seem they wanna replace everyone with foreign H1B temps, offshoring outsourcing and Indian contractors. What a complete joke, just change the name to India telecom already 🇮🇳. As we lose our jobs make sure to DUMP their services

@fa Again, you want to extrapolate what is literally 1 out of 50 people at AT&T as the root cause of whatever issue this is? I gave you the official, HR vetted numbers of H1Bs that AT&T has hired over the past five years. You want AT&T to fire them all? Okay. Tell me when the US has enough STEM graduates in DFW so AT&T can hire them on en masse. There is a REASON only Legg's org even has clearance to hire these people. Look in ANY other org - mass markets/consumer, business, finance, transformation and supply chain, MGO, legal - none of them have any of these hires nor the clearance to do them. (They never did in the first place).

Painting the done to death RW talking point of H1Bs is one way to take the focus off actual non performers that are pervasive across the ENTIRE company.. but do whatever makes you feel better about yourself.

@fa Exactly what roles are these that you have overwhelming number of US applicants for? I work with Legg's org and know and probably work with the same people you do. H1Bs are on 3 year renewals- you cant just hire them for one year and dump them. That is part and parcel of the decision.

Also, hit me up - if you so decide to, I will be in a yellow shirt down at 930am on Monday by Starbucks. Lets see if you and I can have an in person chat in the offices since you believe this post will be taken down by the mods.

@f8 The H1Bs are supposed to be roles for talent that is not readily available in the US employee market. That might have been the case 10 years ago, but there is currently plenty of knowledgeable, talented US employees available to work. The US does not need the help of the H1Bs for 90% of the positions the H1Bs hold.
As you noted, most of the H1Bs are being hired in the tech group. I know this first hand because I was on a conference call with 20 people and I was the only non-Indian on the call. That is not racist, that just the facts of the situation. This post will probably be taken down by the mods.

Okay lets break this down since y'all want to talk H1B. Since the beginning of 2022, AT&T filed ~2,400 H1B applications. Average of 480 jobs per year, with no particular uptick or downtick in that number - entirely tech oriented roles.

AT&T headcount is north of 130K. Assuming ALL the 2,400 stayed put and we had NO attrition/replacement employees.. that is 1.8% of the entire Workforce.

If the floor you work on had 50 people, the PROBLEM as you guys point out here is less than one person on that floor. Less than one person is who you think is the rootcause or rot of the entire issue.

As a brown employee at AT&T myself (with significant working relationships across orgs) , I am visibly disgusted at this racist nonsense on a layoffs site. But go on ahead, continue this - maybe do one better, if any of you have the GUTS to say this in person at work, come on out and tell it on our faces. I am sure we can have a discussion at HQ.

Dafuq a telegraph in 2026? First thing we need to do is dump that name. It reminds everyone how old we are, unlike that HOrizon company.

India Telephone & Telegraph

Yes, with the current state of the job market, we shouldn’t be hiring ANY h1b. NONE

@a5 " the company must employ workers in certain countries"

The revenue from any country outside North America is nominal at best. AT&T is supporting other countries at a much higher rate than they are providing revenue.

The big thing most don't know about is that the company must employ workers in certain countries in order to do business in those countries rather than like it is here in the states. For example, the company does not have to employ anyone in the state of Wisconsin to be able to sell their services to customers in that state.

You forgot revenue . . . AT&T gets almost all of its revenue from the United States, but sends a much higher percentage of revenue outside the US.

Dumped my T services a long time ago and do my best to encourage the same for friends and family. CEO was clear there is no loyalty. Might as well return the favor and say, I have no loyalty to T!! There are much less expensive MVNOs out there!!
