Thread regarding Chevron Corp. layoffs

If over 50 with time at Chevron EOI!

I'm an ex 19 yr employee that had great reviews and more than exceeded our expectations of profits for years. I got laid off first round but had that icky feeling. Thinking the company I've been loyal to for so many years would do the right thing. It's all politics and bringing in 22 yr olds right out of college that have never been in a refinery, to replace you're 22-24 psg. Chevron will suffer from these horrible decisions! There is no loyalty or morals! When I received layoff in round one, almost everyone in the notice was 45 something and up. Get out on your own terms! I regret not being able to say I retired. On a brighter note, almost a yr pay has me enjoying my family and waiting until next year to even care about looking for a job! I wish you all well and sorry you are going through this!

@mm you must be right. this page is too wired! votes definitely being scammed, bot(s) or just ENGINE(s) that've stolen jobs but can't even speak properly, thinking they can outsmart true engineers with real brains. It only exposes its stupid crimes with dare boldness. Its only smart job left is to duck away quickly before it got caught again...

Yea. It's always HR or bots or something sure sure.
It could be a conspiracy. Because they have so much to gain by doing that.

I agree with a lot of these posts, this layoff is just business as usual and compared to the 80's it's nothing and much softer and easier on folks. You have no idea if you were not around. And as an over 50 employee, I have no intention of EOI'ing. I'll quit when I want to and am good and ready. For now, the pay checks keep Rolling in. Good times !

Looks like the HR bots have swooped in the down-vote things here!

No, It's no where near what it used to be with layoffs in the 70's and 80's. It's like a cake walk today. You can deny it and come up with all of your imaginary excuses and reasonings until the crows come home, it doesn't make it true.
Everybody's situation is different. Some may want to work until they're older or until they drop, some not. Pay and benefits are good at Chevron. Get over yourselves. You're not special.

This has been MW's modus operandi going all the way back to his downstream days. If you can find someone in downstream who survived the 2009/10 purge, they'll give you the same story as 2015, 2020, and 2025.

OP and others here: you could repeat the same observations in 2015 and 2020. You'd have to be blind not to recognize that MW wants to have a professional workforce of under-40's supervising the 3rd world "consultants". Both cheap and inexperienced. Since we're not developing any MCPs (are they still called that? - Guyana is being run by Exxon), what could go wrong?

This layoff is business as usual for Chevron but the young'uns are whinin' and screamin' and stompin their feet like the spoiled children that they are.
But but but "it's not the same"!!!

@cn After almost 40 years in this industry, I don't have a need to prove anything to anyone as my time in service is enough to speak for itself. I am merely pointing out that the recent actions of Chevron's management will have lasting impacts:

  • Leveraging the US DOJ to help bail them out of Louisiana lawsuits while shifting jobs out of the US which undercuts the financial systems that support this nation while pretending to be a "good citizen" is not aligned with the general US belief system.
  • Are being dishonest in their statements to the media regarding job opportunities. While there are future opportunities, MW was dishonest and didn't say they are all in Mumbai. He did this in front of the workforce that he is cutting which registered far more internal character damage than he realizes.
  • Are needlessly introducing new process safety risks that threaten the welfare of the public, environment, and workforce by moving DE to India. Other industries have been unsuccessful in offshoring their critical engineering to India for the last 30 years, what makes Chevron think they will be successful? Will there be true accountability when the next safety event occurs that results from shifting DE to India?
  • Are not treating their workforce with respect or dignity. Discarding your most experienced personnel like garbage while promoting inexperienced and unproven hipot youth to the highest level jobs sends the clear message to those in the workforce that they are not valued or even considered. After seeing how the previous cohorts were disposed of, they can also see that they are not far behind. Why wait for that email to come when you can depart on your own choosing and work for a company that values their contributions.

Don't try to sweep this layoff under the carpet as business as usual. I have heard from multiple people that this layoff "feels different". It was since the company didn't go after low performers, but instead they went after the people leaders whom the workforce looked to for direction leaving vacuous yes men and nepo babies in their absence. The actions taken by Chevron management have now sent a clear message to the workforce and put the company on a far different path from before. The Chevron Way culture is broken and all the King's horses and all the King's men won't be able to put it all back together again. Good Luck to you All.

@c3, Not conceding anything, perhaps you need to ask yourself that question and prove that you are worth more than your competition. If you are not getting what you want, look around and see if you can do better. Good luck.

@c2 You are conceding that this is acceptable corporate behavior so you have to ask yourself, how many third worlders will it take to replace your job?

This is the same story from everyone who has ever taken the package in the last 50 years from any Oil & Gas major. The choice is personal, everyone is not in the exact same position, everyone is not treated the same and we have different priorities. Happy for the OP and all but it's not a one size fits all. Some take the package now, some will benefit by taking it later.

@bx "they basically perp walked us out to the curb giving us four days to turn in all our equipment and leave the building. "

They did this to my group as well. Karma is a bi--h, when it visits.

Hey @OP ! Your post reads EXACTLY how the last three months have played out for me down to the details. After nineteen years of being repeatedly recognized as a high performer and valued contributor and absolutely knowing the business after serving in all facets of the company (up, mid, and downstream BUs), they basically perp walked us out to the curb giving us four days to turn in all our equipment and leave the building. Not nearly enough time to assess alternatives, contact co-workers and friends, and say good byes. Nineteen years of friends, contacts, and experiences just gone in four days. This done by a company that I was both loyal and committed to. I gave up so much of myself over the years for the success of this company only to have it wiped out by entitled inexperienced managers who aren't even p*tty trained yet. It did and still does sting. The disloyalty demonstrated by this company far exceeds just repeated disloyalties done to all of us thrown out onto the street. They are also disloyal to the country who's flag they wrap themselves in and seek legal protections from. Sending so many of our roles overseas while throwing experienced and committed employees out the door is not only disrespectful to these people, it's counter productive to our country's economy and our workforce. There are now 8000 more people here not paying into Social Security, nor Medicare, nor income taxes and the CEO telling the media that he sees "lots of opportunities ahead", but he is lying to the world by not saying the opportunities are not here for us. The new Chevron Way is now becoming "The diminishing energy company most despised for its disrespectfulness, disloyalties, dishonesty, and dysfunctionality". This is playing out very similar to the Cr--ker Barrel story but without the media spotlight just yet. So OP, like yourself, I am enjoying more time with my family. I wish you and others in your position going forward. Be thankful that you are no longer working for company that has no appreciation for dedicated and experienced employees with a declining work culture. We got out at the right time. I am sorry for those left behind, but you all now have the time to plan an exit from this tragedy. Good luck you too all.

Congratulations OP!!!
I was one of the people who was not able to EOI because my job position was deemed, "deemed out of scope", therefore I was not eligible to EOI. I did not make a decision during the AEOI phase and now I regret staying at Chevron. Many will think, "this b@stard is whining and he got a job" but my department has completely changed from a well organized team of contributors to a group of leaderless drones in just over 75 days.
I expected change but nothing as severe as we are experiencing. The management is now going after people for the smallest of infractions and my first though regarding the RTO 4 days a week was positive. I wanted to return to the office and stop the WFH "perk" as some may say. But, I now believe the RTO will be used as a way to "condition" and identify employees for the next round of layoffs.
Back to you, OP. I am really happy for you, I wish the best for the people who remain with positions and I wish even more tranquility for those that were laid off. God speed!!!
