Thread regarding Nike Inc. layoffs

Massive self-layoff incoming

https://www.reuters.com/business/media-telecom/trump-mulls-adding-new-100000-fee-h-1b-visas-bloomberg-news-reports-2025-09-19/

Our contracting firms use H1b to save 25%. This new fee destroys Nike’s contracting model. Leadership will probably try offshoring more but those individuals juggle 3 jobs concurrently and don’t do any real work.

Things have been falling apart the last few years and it’s only going to get worse. This is going to be such a dumpster fire.

I was a (white) h-1b until recently. I thought I was racist towards people from India while I was at Nike, until I changed jobs and got actual competent Indian coworkers. Turns out I’m allergic to incompetence regardless of race.

@jh having worked in Nike tech for the last 10 years I have seen the growth and in our Indian teammates. The sad thing is they are super talented but when they become leaders they are among The most racist in the org favouring other Indians and on top of that super s-xist. We brought in talent but forgot to screen them to see if they meet the DEI beliefs that helped them get the job. I am not white just in case anyone wants to throw that out there to discount what I am saying. And it’s not all but a good number

If dalit could code we’d have been offshored decades ago. You are cheap labor hired only through blatant racial discrimination. Your hiring managers categorically exclude blacks, asians, and whites and then cry racism when HR demands an equitable hiring process. There is a reason we quietly stopped talking about the company’s racial percentages. There is a reason HR has had to throw out and redo our hiring procedures multiple times.

We imported a low-trust caste and our company’s brand is failing as a result.

The elite’s imported an entire class of slave labor. Regardless of who you are at home you’re all dalit here.

Why would I welcome a scab with open arms? This is a fight that has been happening since the elites started busting unions & well paying jobs.

The elites have been successful. Making the working class fight amongst ourselves while they make $, get promotions and live excellent lives.

Twiddling my thumbs and Waiting for my wages to increase by 25-50k as someone mentioned on this thread.

How long do I have to wait before I see that in my account?

@dt I don’t disagree with data. I worry about collateral damage. And wonder why they need to do things this way instead of, I don’t know, stop allowing h-1bs from getting contracted out?!? When hired as FTEs, there is no wage suppression. Or hidden fees. Anyway turns out (breaking news) they are not imposing it for existing h-1bs so I hope this gives them some peace of mind for now.

Our contracting firms eat up 75% of the entire H-1B visa allocation. They absolutely are used to suppress wages. Research shows this to be a 25% effect on the ENTIRE tech job market. You would be earning $25-50,000 more annually without all the H-1B abuse.

Add on top that software engineering degrees in the US have TWICE THE UNEMPLOYMENT RATE AS ART DEGREES (7% vs 3%). Caused by 10s of thousands more H-1B visas than there were new tech jobs created being granted every year.

Anyways. The time for justification is past. This fee is not grandfathered in. If you are an H-1B you need to get on a plane NOW or you won’t be able to get back in the US after tomorrow (Sept 21st) without a paid receipt in your employer’s hands.

First of all, it’s also Nike FTEs who have h-1bs. Not just contractors. And the FTEs do get paid properly so there is no “cost saving” there for Nike. Also was I the only one to notice that the international FTEs are the few people who have advanced degrees from top tier/ivy league universities and not just UofO or Portland State? No offense and nothing wrong with these unis, I’m seriously asking though. Hiring from different schools would help diversify ways of thinking. And not many Americans with ties to some place other than Oregon or Washington would just up and move here, unless they studied here and they loved it. So Nike’s bigger chance in hiring from elsewhere is mostly with internationals who are willing to relocate anywhere. Sad sad

@ce L1 Visas have a 5 year maximum and would inherently drain talent from ITC or one of our other branches. As the employee needs to have worked with us overseas for at least one year. Too much up front red tape and hassle. Why bother bringing them to WHQ where we’d need to pay more than the offshore rate?

Then Nike like other companies will switch to L1 visa like Amazon and Microsoft have been doing.

I’m FTE fulltime and this is my J3. Just sitting back, working 1 ticket a week at most. My team is a joke.

It doubles the cost of the average tech contractor. In the current environment we cannot afford that. Looks like college students are back on the menu

No it doesn’t. Honestly the salaries tech pays they can afford to pay that for h1B. It shows justifying foreign talent especially in a time where there are more educated degree holding unemployed workers then there are white collar jobs.

Other countries charge similar for Americans to come work on a visa, this will help the American worker.

And the contracting model outsourcing overseas won’t be impacted as we will just hire foreign workers in foreign timezones vs bringing them here.

FYI this protectionist local for local mindset is happening everywhere; pendulum swinging back from globalization, its natural.
