Thread regarding Oracle Corp. layoffs

If you’re a bottom 25% performer on your team, you’re in trouble

Managers stack rank their teams. There is obviously bias if you have a strong relationship with your direct or skip. But if you have not performed and can’t justify your salary, then you are likely gone. It’s not a charity, and they have to cut jobs somewhere to fund AI. Sales is still bloated at Oracle.

Speaking for sales, if you look at your team and you think there’s a chance you’re bottom 3, you’re likely gone. The March 31st layoffs are no joke. And co primes are in serious trouble.

Not trying to be cynical, just being honest. There are too many people who collect $150-200k year salaries and haven’t sold anything of significance or shown value, and a good relationship with your manager can only buy you so much time.

If folks think otherwise, please let me know. But we are about to see the most significant cuts in Oracle history.

We have co primes who are double paid on deals that they seldom have direct involvement with. Inside sales reps who push paper less effectively than AI could or field sellers. We are still bloated.

They will cut big time and the One Oracle and AI selling models will be figured out come June 1.

If you are at the top 25% you should worry too as you are most likely one of ones making more money.

@cm Yup, and this is why coworkers you never expected get the axe. You tell yourself "we were already woefully understaffed, who is going to do the work?" Of course the answer is that the work just won't get done.

@ab yup, too true, some of the biggest tw@ts luck into the biggest deals. Then our pi$$-poor management don't realize and decide to keep them.

Just look at some of the total fcuktards at the top of this company. It 'aint always the cream that rises to the top, sh1t floats too.

If I survive, I will build up something for myself within a few months. Cant depend on a tech sales job anymore. Anyone thinking on same lines?

Funny how at this point the discussion converges on 9-box grids, company not being a charity, etc, and not on toxic/incompetent managers who consistently underperform over long periods of time and bring their teams to their knees. Despite so-called company-wide reviews, managers are rarely held to the same of scrutiny as lowly employees (they have objectives like "maintain harmony in the team", and under accomplishments they list stuff like "pushed Garth to generate model for better tracking").

@cm that’s not it at all. Rif is literally the opportunity to get rid of low performers in one fell swoop

nah, stack ranking is the main factor for regular trim. for mass layoffs it's a secondary factor at best.

You do realize that a RIF is not a mass "firing" based on performance. They have to select across age, race, color, gender etc. If they did this on performance they would be sued into the ground. RIF's require there to be a detailed age breakdown on the release document; by law. So you can't just remove all the 60+ year olds. You need to justify by closing divisions or products and you have to go wide and high. And by law you can't use salary alone or RSU's. It must "appear" to be across the business. Don't think if you're a top performer you're safe. Also, in August only the SVP's submitted the lists. There are obviously folks cut who aren't loved or liked or performing, but they will also execute others too.

@by Yup, we lost a number of the top (like top 10%) folks in Mexico last week. Wonder how everybody who relied on their stuff is going to survive. One guy was the Master of reports and data. Gone, manager and directors are panicking

@cc This is how it happens. Last August there was very little rhyme or reason to who was selected. Managers did get asked for some input in prior months, but then it was silence, we were told to take some training, and then the Friday before it happened handed a list to execute RIF 1:1's against the following week. Given reports that OIM credentials have already queued up, it would seem this activity is imminent.

Shouldn’t there be WARN filings for a rif of this size? Can you find the links?

In my opinion, the cuts are more random and make no sense. I had to submit names and tried to be logical in my approach - bottom performers and people covering markets with little activity. But then my boss added names that I did not approve of and I have no idea how I will replace their contributions. I expect to see the final list later today if rumors are correct and then 20% of my team will be cut tomorrow. I'm assuming that I survive the cut of course, but I won't be surprised if I'm doing some emergency budgeting tomorrow too. I kinda think the boss is out the door as well and we'll be left holding the [empty] bag.

It’s got nothing to do with performance. Anyone who is paid less and than the level , doesn’t ask to many questions is a yes man and ego strokes are the favorites and are going to the ones retained. The actual performers who do more , ask questions, drive features have done more actually challenge the manager to do more are going to be laid off. Standard September layoff tactic being repeated.

@OP everyone could be in trouble.. Per an SVP, no rhyme or reason with this next riff.

Don’t fool yourself. If you’re in the top 75%, you’re in trouble too. There’ll be no objective rhyme or reason for the rankings.

@OP speaking truth to power. I could not have stated this better. CoPrimes are gone, bottom performers are gone, and come June, the sales engagement model will be much leaner. MH stated there are 3 primary reps for a given account -- that was in the all-hands (3 reps?? are you kidding). DD is a small medium business segment farmer. You can bet there will be fewer sales mouths to feed by the end of this FY.

As to RIF timing... today, tomorrow --whatever ....it's coming and if you aren't ki-ling your number, you are on a list somewhere.

It's done via a 1:1 scheduled 'Important Business Update". 15 minute meeting with your manager. If your manager is impacted then it will be with your director/vp. I know - I've been on both sides of this equation - having to RIF early last year, and then getting RIF'd last August.

OP - you are an id10t.
This is not school where everyone sits for the same exam. The determination of who ranks high or low is subjective.
If you are a sales person, it depends on what set of accounts you are handed and do on.
This ranking rating business is tiresome. Many of the persons who do stack rank are also probably neither smart nor good but will use this as an opportunity to sc--w someone over.

@a3 I don’t buy it. They aren’t having bosses do it. Allegedly, a large email is going out to the impacted with the information on next steps, Tuesday morning.
