Labs on the auction block?

I beard today that we are planning to hand r&d to H1B and offshore. is it true that we are basically done with innovation? My director is always talking about moving people from tech rolls into account mgmt and sales. He says that being technical and bilingual will get me further that trying to create. Our shift is from innovation to implementation? That would explain so much of the cultural shift they've dropped on us. shame, id been looking for opportunity to work in labs since covid. I didn't spent 6 years in school to sell Ericcson junk.

@se Austin Labs building shuttered many years ago. There is a small DC in austin that is affiliated with labs but thats little more than a parking lot for old tech.

@bx there’s a very large buildout in Middletown NJ property where labs is primarily located… how many of those employees are H1B I have no idea.

By Lab size I thought that Willows was our largest lab, then came Middletown. I can't speak for the Middletown lab, but the Willows/Redmond lab has a lot of ancient core hardware that is being used as the backbone for other labs. The lab team there is basically a maintenance staff for the core and to cater to the RF needs of the H1B testers that are here along with their L1 and L2 sponsors. This is the lab that needs to be moved to the new Plano complex so that it can be run properly. If I recall, there are no supervisor ranks (L2-AD or L3-Directors) that are collocated with these teams. They are all in Dallas anyway!!

@bx

5 years ago I would have agreed with that statement. Now, I'm not so sure. I've worked with these teams many times. I lost any respect for them after the AIC fiasco. We had everything going for us. Transport, real estate, spectrum, you name it. Plus, a huge customer base who didn't want to support Amazon and who couldn't afford Azure. It was like, the universe gave us a path to make up for failures of the past. Then, labs started squabbling over which labs site should get to own the project. Never learned who won the battle but, in the end we offloaded our heap of fail to Azure.

These days, I have literally no clue what they do. Probably still testing 5G! :D

I’d like to see Trump add a special tax for every job offshored. That would help to end this stuff.

The real lab is gone. Whatever left behind is just a waste of space

I wouldn’t think that’s on the table … labs has produced (historically) a lot of value here in the US and from what I understand (could be wrong of course) … there’s a very large buildout in Middletown NJ property where labs is primarily located… how many of those employees are H1B I have no idea .
