Lately, it feels like my job is taking over everything. I leave the office late, then I'm still checking emails at home (which, I know, my own fault, but some things have to be done if I'm to ever return home). There's just no energy left for my family or anything I enjoy doing. Is anyone else feeling this completely drained?

Absolutely not, under no circumstances.
@aj You get a paycheck don’t you? If you start eight and skate that paycheck goes away. Enough said!
It has been that way since Steve Jobs invented the IPhone.
“ You technical support managers on the wireline side of things have been sc--wed over hard the past decade. Do more with less with the expectation of 24/7 availability when there's a network outage”
Thanks for acknowledging that. They make it out to be normal. We don’t get paid extra or OT for it either. They just cut more people and are merging groups. We now we have to do even more, plus additional jobs we never had before. Oh and still be in the office during regular hours or if you’re shift have to be in nights and weekends at the office. IMO it is literally the worst job to have at this company.
This place has made me hate my life.
OP-
Always remember no matter how hard you work and how many off duty hours you complete.
When your number is up, T will let you go regardless of how dedicated an employee you are.
Per the CEO T is market based and not loyalty based.
8 and skate.
It can wait.
Let them hate.
Yes, the wire tech position can be both mentally and physically straining. If you are tired after a long day have a cold adult beverage.
Just be in office for 8 hours, nothing more is expected from you. If you are doing anything outside office 8 hours, its your problem. We just want people in office nothing else.
It sounds like you’ve shifted to a new season of life and need to make some different choices concerning employment.
Don't do it. Dedication means nothing to Stinky.
He
Does
Not
Care.
Your family comes first.
You are in control of the balance and at this point you are choosing to to tilt the scale toward the company. Remember the company is not going to reward your loyalty. It will stab you in the back if it benefits the company. Just look at all the high performers that are getting the axe. Working extra and putting in more than the required 8 didn’t save them. Nor will it save you when your number is pulled.
If you’d stay off these boards you’d regain a lot of wasted time to get your work done more efficiently,
Why are you leaving late? 8 and skate, market driven, zero loyalty. Big Stink hates you and wants you gone, so there should be ZERO extra effort given.
I enjoy the work and take pride in my contributions. I am well anchored and realize the leadership of AT&T will invariably make a decision that erases any value I bring to the table. People / Organizations should pay a dear price for making poor decisions. That experience is a catalyst to mature and learn to make better decisions. On that note, I equally celebrate our few successes and our many failures. It makes no difference to me as long as my paycheck clears.
Lots of teams are 24/7/365 especially on the network side.
You technical support managers on the wireline side of things have been sc--wed over hard the past decade. Do more with less with the expectation of 24/7 availability when there's a network outage and the untrained NRC or central office "techs" don't know how to fix the problem.
I'm one of those "combo" techs and at least have the luxury to walk away after 8 hours.
"Family comes first only applies to Directors and above. Both from a hiring and home life standpoint.
They view the rest of us as here to serve them."
Complete nonsense. The average Director and above works more than the average below Director - at least in the non-bargained space and perhaps in the bargained space. 100% sure of this.
Yes it is. You need to take control and do it yourself. Company isn’t going to do it for you.
Eight and skate. It’ll be there tomorrow.

Remember, you control your work/life balance! Go to office, work, and leave 6-8 hours later and you’ll be fine! The work WILL be there tomorrow. If you do work any from home, work on your skills so you can market yourself in the future. Use your caregiver and sick days when needed or feeling burnt out. It’s amazing how just one day away from work can replenish you! With no loyalty in this company you control everything.
I once had an employee (diff co) who would stay later than she reported. I told her while she felt she was doing the right thing to get the work done, it actually was only succeeding in getting the work done. It was giving false impressions on how many hours it was taking to get the work done, negatively affecting productivity data for everyone since on paper it looked like she was doing twice the work in half the time, and how many people were actually needed to get the work done. And then of course, there was the effect on her of not getting paid what she was owed, and potentially affecting her social/family life.
Lots of teams are 24/7/365 especially on the network side. But, yes, I do understand where you are coming from. It really never ends anymore, not like it used to. That’s what happens with do more with less, you burn out everyone left. We’ve had less and less every year. Pascal said well we cut all these people and things still operate, so… well, we just have to let stuff start failing instead of ki-ling ourselves, then they will reverse course.
Keep going. Do more work means more golf time for me.
We're a number, bud.
Do your time. Nothing more.
Remember, AT&T forced an experimental shot on you. They threatened jobs and livelihoods over personal medical decisions.
Don't give this awful company anything more than they deserve.
@OP Our CEO is saying never be loyal to this company, just come and leave office, so lonely people can have good life. You can find people around you, who worked more than 8 hours from anywhere marked free riders and terminated and who just go and come back from office are enjoying their life.
This is your choice. No one is making you work like this. Trust me your manager isn’t working this hard and I’m pretty sure they don’t care if you are either.
family comes first. att can always replace you and wont give a damn about you.
