Thread regarding Wells Fargo & Co. layoffs

Q: Laid off while in office and no manager on site

What happens if you go into the office, your manager works in a different office and you are laid off? Do they send guards up to you to escort you out?

As a manager who was laid off with a direct manager who was in another location, it was done during one-on-one at our scheduled time. When they started reading from 'the script' - I realized what was happening and just quietly listened while inside I was having a private celebration in my mind! Once they were done, they asked me to complete a few administrative tasks that needed to be buttoned up before they shut my system down. They also stated my directs were being spoken to about the situation.

I then walked down the halls in my location, letting my long time counterparts know the news of my 'golden ticket' as I was a very long tenured employee so got the maximum severance combined with a 60 day non-working notice. Came back to my office, finished up the administrative tasks as manager kept pinging me continuously to ensure they were completed. Once I said yes, my system was non-functional within minutes. I left my corporate P, card, badges, etc. on the desk, put my laptop in a box to be shipped by the office admin along with a box of personnel files I had in a locked drawer, taking pictures of everything on my phone to send my manager as proof I had complied with all of their requests. I then proceeded to shred a bunch of old business documentation, packed two boxes of personal items and had two of my beloved onsite colleagues walk me out the door and into my next chapter.

The exercise was the most freeing feeling, knowing I was leaving all of the stress of corporate life behind. While now nearing the end of my severance, I have cherished every day of these many months to truly live away from the grind of a corporate gerbil wheel and the craziness that the last few years has been brought to bear on myself and so many other hard working WF employees. I always tried to do the right thing for my employees, my customers, and the business. In the end, it turned out ok for me - wishing the same for anyone else who has or will go through being exited in this manner.

Great question! When I was laid off, a probe was launched from the orbiting Wells Fargo Mothership. A guy who looked remarkably like Mitch McConnell in a space suit approached my desk, handed me a severance agreement to sign, then instantly vaporized my equipment. He wished me well, then ascended to the Mothership.

Seriously, I wish you well. I was laid off in August, 2024 and life has been glorious ever since. Be captain of your own ship. One benefit of layoff, I stopped reacting to someone else and started acting as my own employer. Best to you.

Nope, not at all. This happened to me in Charlotte. I turned in my laptop at security, used the gym for about 2 hours to destress, took about a 30 minute hot shower, and drove home with zero fanfare.

I seldom get a chuckle but thinking building security with waste chains and handcuffs was hilarious. First they would have to be physically fit to catch you but just in case wouln’t that be sort of unlawful restraint

thank you though for the chuckle for today

You are still an employee during the displacement period. If you want to get your severance you will still abide by all company policies. Hence, they don’t need to escort you out.

I was informed over a teams call. I happened to be in the office that day. I was told all my access would be cut off in 30 minutes. I hung out for an hour or so saying goodbyes. I walked over to the tech hub handed over my laptop. I turned in my badge to security on the way out. Since i didn't have my token with me and I didnt want to go back to the office to return that, I had my manager send me a prepaid fedex box and i shipped that back.

I'd say depending on the situation you'd be looking at a teams call then either walk yourself out or they will find someone in your location to hand your stuff over to such as laptop, building/parking fobs, etc. where applicable

I’m sure it depends on LOB. I know someone who was the only person on their team working out of a particular office, they got the teams call at the office and simply had an hour before access was cut off… they packed up and walked out on their own, no escort or anything like that.

@OP
Yes, usually there are two guards with cuffs and wastechains at the ready in case you start blowing a fuse. That is for their safety, not yours.

No. They give you approximately 30 minutes to get all your stuff and leave before they cut your access off. Start taking all your personal items home now.

They lay you off on teams and all your access is turned off within hours. Why hang out.

If I got laid off I’d walk out the door 2 seconds after the call.

I was displaced by my manager on a teams meeting, no HR was present. I was home, but I had a 2 week notice period in which I still had to come into office 3 days a week. Whatever, I ended up coffee badging, but it surely seems like a major security risk.

They will either fly to you or have a proxy (HR or another manager) be physically with you.

I've never seen guards escort anyone out of the building. Not even when a clinically insane coworker had an office the wall temper tantrum. The only time I've seen security is when they walked onto the floor with the rescue squad workers. Someone had a seizure at work.
