IBM: A Spin-Off Is Just Not Enough

So, to summarize the answers to my initial questions: What's broken now that will remain so after the spin-off is IBM's growth mindset, the evidence of which is yet to show up at the top line. The pandemic has worsened the situation in... — read more

A take on the spin off

Hi Folks Here is a quite realistic view of the spin off. LOTS and LOTS of issues have to be addressed. Mostly about dumping “legacy” NOTE one big issue is, IBM missed the public cloud market, and there is nothing they can do to... — read more

Made me chuckle...

Will IBM get taken over

Split makes IBM a 60 billion $ turnover company. So maybe a buy out of 150 billion would get it. Maybe. It’s a ripe company to buy i think

Still a systems company

I read an interesting article on the future of IBM in the hybrid cloud world where the author questioned whether selling off the System x server business was a good idea. I would like to hear your thoughts. Here is the... — read more

Is HR ready for changes?

I just read an article about an IBM study which pointed out that HR needs to make extra efforts to finally focus on what we actually need. I hope they know how to do it?! In case somebody is interested:... — read more

GTS - could be good

Internal messaging and communication is all about low margin and declining side of GTS spin off but on the cloud and AI side, it’s the same. GTS is still a big revenue engine with so many big contracts and customers. Anyone sees the positive side of... — read more

GTS (newco) , is it time to leave?

As a GTS emplyee I am considering leaving asap as I can hardly see anything good out of this for NewCo. Question for other GTS emplyees, what is your take on current sitation? Update the CV and get out ASAP?

Is NewCo Doomed from the start?

When one looks at this spinoff of NewCo in a little depth, one has to wonder how the heck NewCo will survive and thrive. Most spinoffs, think Delphi Auto Parts from GM, had an independent business that could continue to supply the mother company... — read more

GTS and GBS seem to do the same thing.

I moved from GTS to GBS recently, and I don't see any real difference between the 2 divisions. Both basically manage client's IT. GBS claims to be more about cloud, but supporting a client's AWS, AZURE, and other cloud services is the same thing as... — read more

Will the results be the same?

I just read an interesting comparison of IBM today and the situation Microsoft was in 10 years ago when they opted for a public cloud strategy. I hope that we will see a similar success in the future. Here is an article with the comparison:... — read more

GTS has many that work as contractors. Anyone have any idea if cuts to contractors is likely as NewCo comes online? Any feel for how many?

Problem # 1: IBM hasn't been a Tech company in a long, long time. The Financial Engineering business model, however, has been unsuccessful.

It appears that IBM mostly gave up on developing technology in-house and turned to the financial engineering business model in the early 2000's, maybe even earlier. IBM became the Department Store of the tech industry. As quoted below, IBM just was... — read more
