If your boss is Indian like mine, she/he will put you on the blackballed or non-rehire list. Getting laid off is difficult enough. In my case, HR told me I could reapply after six months. I waited, reapplied several times, and each application initially moved forward, only to end with a rejection a few days later.

Eventually, I spoke with a director who was on their way out of the company. They told me they believed I had been placed on a non-rehire list. Whether that's what happened or not, it explained why my applications never went anywhere.

A week later, I landed an even better position with a higher title and better compensation. Looking back, it turned out to be a blessing in disguise.

Interestingly, none of my former coworkers reached out to congratulate me, but I still notice some of them viewing my LinkedIn profile. Meanwhile, I've heard the company has been going through restructuring, and many employees are working extremely long hours.

My takeaway is simple: if a company has to lay people off, treat them with respect. If someone has performed well, don't unnecessarily close the door on future opportunities. People move on, grow, and often come back with even more experience. Professionalism and respect should go both ways.

It definitely does happen, I know of one person on the permanent do not rehire list (they sent company documents to themselves and left for a competitor). It is very self evident why this person would not be eligible. But for most people, it’s likely very hard to find out unless you know someone who can look.

In general, it’s probably better to move on to employment elsewhere rather than to come back. If they really want you they’d seek you out and you could come back on terms that are likely better for you.

Honestly, it'd be very hard to find out. The most likely source of confirmation would be people who are still employed. How actionable in terms of employment law, i.e. civil lawsuit, will depend on the quality of evidence.

Employers don't have to tell you why they did not accept your application.

It's hard to know. If you suspect that management maintains such a list I'd suggest not applying to work for them. It's a red flag.
