Been here less than a year and now I have almost nothing to do. Boss doesnt care when I ask for more work. Is this how they phase people out before letting them go?

Even in good time for many Jan is slow until projects get funded
If you're new, they slow pace you. When the work starts, it won't end. You'll be blamed for everything that goes wrong and invisible when things go smooth.
@OP no, dont freak out. You're new. Keep asking for more work and then deliver not just with what is asked. Always be curious.
