Thread regarding Highmark Health layoffs

H1B Visa to cost 100k

Wonder how this will effect EnGen and Highmark???

It applies to H‑1B visa applicants who are outside the U.S. seeking new entry or visa issuance. The rule requires that, for an H‑1B petition to be accepted (or, more precisely, for visa issuance / entry to be allowed if one is outside the U.S.), the employer must pay a supplemental fee of $100,000.

There is a stark difference between my Indian colleagues(probably on H1B) in US offices vs offshore colleagues in India offices. Just a handful of offshore is knowledgeable while we rely heavily on the ones who are here and are often the top performers.

People complain, complain, complain...yet they never actually DO anything to change things.
Suggestion: If you want to get this cr-p NOTICED, then you need to do MORE than just complain here on The Layoff. I'm a strong proponent of "letter-writing campaigns". You write ONE letter DETAILING your concerns AND the evidence. Then, you make 20-25 copies, and you send it to E.V.E.R.Y.W.H.E.R.E that you feel will listen to you (i.e. government agencies AT ALL LEVELS, politicians, LOCAL and NATIONAL media and, yes, even Highmark COMPETITORS). The objective is NOT to get EACH of them to take action, but to have them become aware of the situation AND they will, in turn, forward the concern to whom THEY feel can take the action. Trust me, I've used this tactic multiple times with OUTSTANDING results.....EACH in my favor. If enough people get the word out as to what Highmark and enGendered are doing, then perhaps we can the CEOs uncomfortable with all the "breathing down their necks" and get this stopped once and for all. Remember: ONE letter - MANY copies - MANY recipients - then RESULTS.

There is one engen VP who is so enthusiastic about offshoring that she’d probably offshore her own mother if it meant a promotion.

The high cost of H-1B labor only makes offshoring more attractive.

Even the proposed 25% tax on offshore operations isn’t substantial enough to make the C-suite seriously reconsider their strategy.

How many people/citizens were told not to apply/not allowed to apply for a posted job because it was posted to hire an H1B person? The jobs did not require specialized skills. Just business analyst or managers. These open jobs must be filed with the dept of labor and not able to "find" any candidates before filling with a visa person. Seems like it's illegal but it has happened to me and several others I know.

@vv if the jobs could have gone offshore, they would have already.
Both offshoring and H1B are a huge problem

People in the US dream that they will get H1B jobs if the H-1B program is scrapped, but they don’t realize that most of these jobs would actually be sent offshore. Offshoring is a big threat compared to H1B.

H1B isn't the issue so much as offshoring.

this could mean all H1Bs are about to be laid off in the next round.

based on my quick research of publicly available information, Highmark doesn't use a lot of H1B. 413 since 2019. so about 1% of employees.

The more applicable news for US engen employees is the proposal of the HIRE act by Senator Bernie Moreno (R-Ohio) which would create a 25% tax on outsourcing payments, defined as any money paid by a U.S. company or taxpayer to a foreign person whose work benefits consumers in the United States.

25% unfortunately not nearly enough to slow down thryve's growth.
