Thread regarding Capital One layoffs

Cheap necklace

Hey all, here again. My long tenured role within capital one was not fairly compensated. Amidst my rapid, unjust departure, all I was provided for years of high level work was a cheap necklace from capital one. It’s actually broken and is being held together by my hope and dreams crushed by capital one and their toxic work environment. A cheap necklace is the embodiment of capital one as a company.

@sm contractors are the first to go. Unlike 2x a year perfirmance calibrations they can fire contractors anytime.

Capital One utilizes a strict, twice-yearly stack ranking (or "forced distribution") system, where managers rank employees against peers to categorize them into performance tiers. Approximately 10–15% of employees are consistently placed in the bottom "below strong" tier, often facing Performance Improvement Plans (PIPs) and potential termination. [1, 2, 3, 4]
Key Aspects of Capital One's Stack Ranking:

• Forced Distribution: A standardized bell curve is applied across the company, necessitating that a specific percentage of employees are ranked low, regardless of overall team performance.
• "Below Strong" Tier: 8–15% of employees are designated "Below Strong" every six months, which can lead to coaching plans and PIPs.
• Performance Impact: The system is described as competitive, heavily influencing bonuses, promotion velocity, and job security.
• Manager Discretion: A significant amount of power lies with the manager to advocate for their employees during ranking meetings, making the experience highly dependent on leadership.
• Cultural Impact: The system is criticized for fostering a high-stress environment that reduces collaboration and raises concerns about cut-throat culture. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8]

Common Employee Experiences:

• Intense Pressure: Employees often focus heavily on not being in the bottom 15%, which can take a toll on mental health.
• High Performance Bar: While stressful, some find the environment to be a place with great perks and opportunities for high performers.
• Visibility Matters: Success often requires high visibility to managers and skip-level leaders. [2, 3, 5, 7, 9]

Disclaimer: Performance management systems and their implementation can change.

Mid year 2026 stack rankings has begun.

Individuals have to submit to their management a self review in Google Slides and rate themselves in preparation of calibration meetings happening in May and June. Then they input their rating in Workday. But it's all rigged. Your pathetic "manager" will ignore anything and will target you out of jealousy. It's been a year since the Discover merger has started, now all the m*fukers are on Capone's Workday instance and likely a target of 30% of employees will be put on a PIP to be fired. Because these are not "layoffs" and no WARN is provided the entire world won't know that Capone is self-destructing.

Never sign a PIP. Negotiate a severance. Ask for money.

Cheap Necklace: Coaching Plans, PIPs, and Firings

I had completed an extremely challenging technology project at the enterprise level that revolutionized the company’s software deployment—a groundbreaking achievement. I led the entire project from inception to completion.

One day, I returned home to find a brown paper bag on my lobby floor, addressed to me from Capone. In my kitchen, I opened it to reveal a cheap necklace with a dirty ribbon and a scrap metal medal. This was their thank-you gift for leading the entire corporation. Capone is cheap and vulgar, and this gift reflected that. I was furious. I immediately threw it into the kitchen trash can, disgusted by the disrespect, and dramatically shoved the entire trash bag down the chute with a flourish. I felt so dirty, so exploited, so demeaned. It was like being knighted with a rusty spoon. Honestly, I’ve seen better jewelry washed up in the sewer. And they even had the nerve to put me on a coaching plan. I got out of it by shouting at my manager like it was an animal. This manager was a l-wlife who stole credit for my work, got a promotion and Spot awards from my hard work because they were too d-mb, stupid, and lazy to accomplish anything on their own. That animal was even congratulated and recognized by the CEO, based on my sweat equity and toil.

Capone is an alpha usurer and a menace to its employees and customers. It must be shut down, period. I didn't want any diseases from that cheap jewelry.
