Thread regarding Bank of New York Mellon Corp. layoffs

Visa sponsorships

I just don’t see why I should be supportive of a foreigner taking the place of an American candidate that is equally or more qualified, speaks the language, and won’t result in brain drain after a few years. These entitled early career applicants are students with no experience other than symbolic “internships” where they were told they are the center of the universe. We pay them a premium but they are worse than AI. At least AI can follow directions.

@nf+1kgsaxr63 Even CPA firms are saying this. They are saying not as many are going into accounting anymore. Not sure I believe this 100%. Truth is the excuse is being used to justify outsourcing and/ or bring in AI. And if it is true it’s only because we know work is being sent offshore and parents are probably telling their children don’t bother. My trusted accounting professor from 25 years ago told me be careful. Everything is being automated heavily especially in asset servicing. He said don’t work for this company.

You can whine all you want but the reality is that the talent does not exist here to be hired. Either the firm has a bad reputation or there is no real talent available out of our school system.

This will get down voted for speaking the truth.

@bc this is only a company problem. The people are given the opportunity to work by company and they're taking it. If company stops hiring them people will stop coming.

@me+1kgsaxr63 We don’t work 9-5. I don’t know what you mean by no leg to stand on like we have some sort of wonderful work hours. We’re required to work 8 hours. Although it used to be 7. Then became 7.5 now 8. Some do sign on early though. 10-7 is the norm. Some choose to start at 9:30, but they can’t sign off early. Can’t sign off till all is done and delivered. I’ve gotten stuck till midnight plenty of times when the system breaks unexpectedly at 6 pm. And we have to sit till it’s fixed several hours later.

@m6 but what time does your team start work? If it's not 9 am or before then you don't really have a leg to stand on.

@ej+1kgsaxr63 I’m American and my team doesn’t get done till 7PM if we are lucky. If there’s issues it can extend our night several hours. You must be in one of those lucky teams that can just drop and go at 5 PM. Anyway there’s probably a reason our colleagues in India are willing to work our hours at least for now. They have told me that BNY is currently one of the biggest and best companies to work for in India. They do currently have initiatives to pass the work back to us earlier in the day. We’ll see how that goes since there’s not many left in the US to support it since they’ve all been let go.

You shouldnt be and the govt needs to put a stop to this sh-t. No U.S company should be allowed to terminate americans for foreigners

@ej More time spent trying the same thing over and over and getting the same result because someone doesn't know how to achieve the desired / required result, because they're afraid to ask someone for help, doesn't mean more productivity. APAC and other geographically located staff work for a U.S based company. It's called command and control. That resides in the U.S. If someone in the U.S takes a position with a company that isn't U.S based, they'd be expected to follow the same rules. Similar to employees on the West Coast who work for an East Coast based company. You can't complain about those 5AM - 6AM calls...well, you can, but....su-k it up buttercup.

@OP You don't need to be supportive of a foreigner OP. The bank does because it's cheaper for them and they get more productivity for minimal costs. If you look at the office after 5pm, the ones that are still there staying behind and working hard tend to be "foreigners". Those staff in APAC locations who have US colleagues - you'll see them willing to meet during US working hours when it's after their working hours. Ask an American to do that and they'll throw their toys out of their pram and expect an exceed expectations because of that one time they joined a call outside of their working hours at 6:30pm. You just look after yourself and leave the business running to others.

It’s both. Corporate greed, and Indians.

All early careers candidates have to be citizens or permanent residents to work here (except for AI Hub)

I get the sentiment but what’s the assumption here? All early applicants with brown skin are Indians and need sponsorship? There are lots of US citizens too and BNY does not hire anyone on a visa in the US anymore..stop dealing with this as a India/Indian problem and start highlighting corporate greed
