Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Mass Workplace Relocations beginning Jan 2026

So for those of you who aren’t getting information from your managers, directors, etc., the workplace relocation notifications are going to take place beginning first or second week of January. If you’re not in one of the 40 key network locations, the four hubs or one of the 10 to 12 other approved locations you will be getting notification to move to a new office location.

If you’re within 50 miles of your new location, you’ll be expected to start reporting within 60 days. If you’re over 50 miles you will have 60 days to say whether or not you will accept the new location assignment if you say yes you will have until late spring early summer 2027 to make the move if you say no in all likelihood, you’re off the payroll by June 2026. If you say yes, and then the year passes and it’s time for you to go, and you say no, you’ll be terminated without severance.

Everyone, regardless of your role or your organization is affected. Whether you’re a national employee, original employee or a market based employee all these rules apply and many of us are already being told unofficially where we’re headed.

This is all part of a two prong effort to reduce headcount and also reduce real estate footprint. So the company will reduce real estate footprint and obviously save money by selling off those buildings and/or ending leases. Secondly, they’ll save money with a reduced headcount because there’s going to be people who say no right out the gate and others who will leave the company in the term or when the time comes further reducing headcount considering how many people this affects it’s gonna be a pretty steep cut in headcount when it all shakes out.

Anyone know how to find the list of approved KNL’s? Last one I saw was from 2024, looking for the most recent.

I just completed a "Follow The Work" or else, this spring, moving from Middletown to Atlanta! I need to see if they will let me move back as I never planned to settle in.

So if you're not in one of the 54-56 locations you are referencing those people will have to move. This will be a massive disruption....not.

@dt You’re right there is language in the contracts that allow for follow the work or layoffs however it’s first hired last fired and they have bumping rights within title and home city. Another thing involuntary severance for a technician can be cost prohibitive so they like to do that voluntarily.

@nt …. i’m not saying I don’t believe you – in fact, that is what I would expect long-term. I just haven’t seen them move fast enough to make any sort of logical sense with their plans . The past few years have mostly been chaos and dysfunction from what I’ve seen..
In Bedminster, the rumor was an entire team of CSO was told to work at home for a month or more (I think it was September or October? ) so they could renovate and pack more cubicles in. Also, an executive team from Atlanta toured the building in October to see where they could stuff more people (lots of cafeteria booths open!)
There was a small surplus just recently, but definitely not enough to make enough available space to assign any more teams to this location.
If they really do push through this mass relocation, they would have to reassign entire teams to Middletown very quickly because more 5x a week employees are not going to fit even short term.
Honestly, I don’t really care either way. I’m just constantly surprised that., for a bunch of engineering teams, they seem to have so much trouble counting desks and people.

@m9

That’s because you clearly don’t know the plan.

The plan is, you’re going to Middletown.

We just completed a large renovation on several floors and now have more than enough space. They’ve got army’s of contractors working on everything from HVAC, New Labs, new collaborative workspace, remodeling bathrooms, and the IQ bar is coming back.

Plenty of room now, so come on down!

Don’t believe me?

You’ll see!

There’s still no extra room or parking in Bedminster- 1100 parking spots total - one way in, one way out of the complex off the highway. Think the plan was/is to convert some of the conference rooms to ‘call center’ like seating to pack more people in, and use the cafeteria booths as desks , but it’s a leased building and nowhere to add parking. Good plan….

No one will say “NO”. You get another years pay in a terrible job market. (Instead of 6 months severance). This company has no idea how to motivate movement. You should have 6 months to report to the new location so that the payout is the same. What do they lose by lying? Nothing.

Exactly, said this before when the relocations started previously.
There’s really no loss to just lying and saying you’ll move, you keep insurance, bonuses, paychecks, etc and you can coast while you brush up on interview skills, and interview out.
Only id--ts said no and took the measly severance.

I lied about moving, collected multiple connection awards, collected years of bonuses, and my regular pay as well as raises not to mention RSU’s and the 401k match…for a few months there I didn’t do anything but interview practice and interview with other companies.

When it came time to move, I simply said “yeah nah I’m gonna resign” and they gave me virtual to keep me.

If they try to get rid of my virtual designation and make me move, I’ll lie and say “sure” and do exactly the same thing again and run down the clock.

Fu-k them and their under handed bullsh-t. Fu-k Stankey, fu-k these people.
Take as much as you can from them.
This is an adversarial relationship, upper management is the enemy.

@b8 “ You're only speaking for half the crowd. Represented employees can't be treated like that.”

Ask your former dues paying members of all the call centers that have been outsourced if they agree.

Here’s some good advice for those coming to NJ.
Don’t move near Bedminster.

Move near Middletown and save yourself a lot of headaches.

Middletown will be the last office standing in NJ guaranteed

The problem for AT&T and Stankey is the fact that all the levels below him slow roll his requests.

As it relates AI roll out, RTO and HUB locations everyone below Stankey has been engaged in corporate sabotage. SVP, VP and AVPs have all been intentionally dragging their feet to protect their kingdoms and ensure they get a few more years. It would be amazing how fast all these changes would happen if you weren’t relying on the retiree crowd to step away.

You actually get your hand slapped around here for trying to embrace change and innovation.

The four pillars are just propaganda.

We don’t Move Faster…….ever!
