Thread regarding Bank of New York Mellon Corp. layoffs

Impact of AI in your own team?

Many of the conversations here focus on RTO, offshoring and site closures. Personally, I think those issues are small compared with what the firm is contemplating with AI adoption — but there’s hardly any discussion about it in this forum.

What have you noticed in your own team? Are you seeing “digital employees” doing meaningful work? Have vacancies been closed with AI cited as a reason? Have contractors or staff been let go with AI mentioned as a factor?

I’ve heard this is already happening in the engineering organisation, with the “fisherman lady” setting rather ambitious targets

@j3 It's called Snowflake.

But even then there still must be a human in the loop to address AI slop and hallucinations, to prevent losses due to execution errors and to validate data for regulators.

Otherwise Jane (The bar is raised") gets buried in even more consent orders.

Being heavily pushed on us, definitely using it, expected to use it and looking for ways it can replace functions and job positions.

Call me when it even has an inkling of how to interact with the plethora of externally developed ancient systems, along with internally developed systems.

@a9+1kqqfd0th Is it? I can’t tell. There’s macros, sure. Automated I guess with lots of manual intervention. Anyone who says Fund Accounting is fully automated probably is high up and doesn’t actually work in Fund Accounting.

@e7 actually you are wrong, not a people team person at all, but I’ve just discovered that AI truly helps me do my work faster. All the negative comments to posts that AI is actually helpful to some people’s job roles because they just don’t use it or don’t want to accept the inevitable.

My 2 cents..
Regardless if you think it’s useful or useless, you gotta play their game and portrait yourself as someone who is either leading the AI adoption or at (the very) least “adapting” and taking advantage of AI.
They are grouping people into 3 groups: leading adoption, leveraging AI and falling behind.

I personally don’t think none of what AI gave us this far was life changing, nor I belive it will be in the near future.

But we know how this company operates and they will get rid of people they believe that are falling behind, they just need an excuse to mass terminate us. Don’t give them motive.

@e2 Why do we find People Team trolls so easy to identify? Please make yourself useful. You should be on the next layoff cut list for sure. #BNYLife

It will absolutely change how this company works and how many people are needed when everyone in the company is equipped and up to speed. I use it now probably 50% of the time to do my work and it made things simpler and quicker in many ways. Personally I think it’s a great asset. It will reduce head count and development head count as well.

I use it a lot. I can ask Windsurf to generate a routine to do a specific task and have it sp-t out code in seconds. It's probably 95% correct most of the time, and the corrections I make are to make code meet our standards, which differ from industry norms due to the age of our system. It does save me doing a lot of typing.

It's also helpful in finding issues in code and cleaning up cloned code.

Is it worth it? I doubt it, at this point. It probably costs more than if I spent an extra hour or two writing the code myself. Also, how long will it be until most of the arguments/posts on various Internet forums are just two AI bots exchanging barbs?

There is no effect in Risk although the digital employees introduced by our tech risk team try to combine two related files to produce a meaningless view which we are unable to use to anything meaningful. They canceled their fake openings on the back of that. Unfortunately , several of our openings are canceled now because of this stupidity.

Is AI really a revolution or just another bubble? Based on current model, this thing really su-k up a lot of energy and resource, specially copper, is it really sustainable?

There is a lot of TALK about AI but precious little or nothing concerning results/success. Off the record, my boss told us that AI doesn’t help us, yet they have to toe the line and pontificate about it because THEIR bosses are infatuated with it. It all just seems an excuse to offshore to this point. AI=All India.

It’s more like an excuse to revisit all these legacy processes. Maybe there’s an AI component, but for the most part it’s pretty healthy and not impacting any jobs.

Haven’t noticed any real use of AI in Fund Accounting. Although I’m sure it’s to come. They must be thinking AI is working though cause not only have they shrunk the US footprint but our team in India is down to a person or two and as more leave spots close on both teams.
