Thread regarding ConocoPhillips layoffs

Boss Says I’m Safe

My supervisor says I’m safe, and not to worry. He’s always been straight with me, but part of me thinks “what else would he say”…

Has anyone else been reassured that they are safe? I guess I will know for sure by Friday evening…

@OP Exactly the same for me. Don’t give people a false sense of security! Simply say you don’t know. I was told by many, I’d be ok. It’s a good thing I’ve been in the patch for so long, that I know better! If you’re a good leader you should have the ability to deliver good and bad news and know when to be neutral. At the very least, all should have had face to face conversations (even via teams) but I believe most received a 30 second phone call. I was even told I would receive an additional weeks pay as severance, then received an email that, that was incorrect. Consistent, correct and accurate messaging should have gone out! Absolute fail by COP and the Boston Consulting group!

Unfortunately, no one is ever safe during times like these. I learned this back in 2015/2016. The head of our department (my boss) thought he knew who was safe & layoffs were "over" by the end of 2015. Little did he know, his own boss was on the chopping block, and once they were let go, so was my boss. Immediately after, they brought in someone to replace him who then downsized the entire team even more. Little by little throughout the year of 2016 we'd hear of another person on our team being let go. I survived, but the working environment of what was left in 2017, became beyond toxic. Not trying to instill fear, but rather share my experience from those layoffs back in 2015 and that was only announced as a 10% global workforce cut...I can not fathom 25%. Good luck to everyone!

Is it safe? It just reminds me of a scene from the movie Marathon Man.

@d4 - Yessir! I had the exact same thing happen to me. My boss swore our group was safe, and the next day my entire group got let go. You see, my manager wasn’t aware that his boss had decided to offshore our entire team and move him to a new role…. Our boss spoke truthfully: we were safe to the best of his knowledge at that moment. The next day he found out new information…

Many years ago my boss told me the same on a Friday. The next Monday he had me in his office laying me off. The guy almost had tears in his eyes, and he had no clue what the higher ups had done. I know another manager that laid off most of his staff, and at the end of the day HR and his boss came in and laid him off.

@cs I think it’s part of the whole “streamlining and taking work out of the system “ thing . All those guys can easily be replaced with contractors who report to some guy 400 miles away who’s minoring ops from a computer screen. Should be a real disaster

@c0 Dang. I’m surprised they would lay any field people off, especially in WTX. That doesn’t make a lot of sense.

I figured this layoff would be mostly office workers.

Tell your boss they just cut about 20 people in a field office who work in production . Like field guys . Ask him / her if your job is more mission critical than a lease operator . No one is safe

The job market is an AI cesspool now. The worst hirers do not even read submitted applications.

@bq Relationships count for more than performance around here. I don't necessarily agree with it, but is true. I have seen it repeatedly in my career here.

My opinion is that you need a baseline of solid performance, and then you need to form those personal relationships on top of that foundation. But logic isn't necessarily valued in the corporate world

@OP Our boss tells a few on our team that they’re good but doesn’t tell the rest anything. Says he doesn’t know anything. 🤔

Yes, there has been various discussions with staff.

  1. You have been told you are going to be let go and already started the transition of others learning parts of your role and answering how much time it takes to do various parts of your roles.

  2. You are safe and working on next year assignments and planning with your supervisor. Some have even been told what their new role will be.

  3. The majority are not being told anything because management does not know.

  4. Job openings and hiring are continuing so that will change some outcomes in your group. You won’t see the new hires on the organization chart yet as they are future hires.

Just hold your head high and know that this situation is going to be over soon and no matter the outcome, you will find a stable job going forward.

They may not even know who is safe. But don’t worry you are safe until you are not.
