@cz “THIS”……only 2020-2021 delayed this due to the pandemic. However, the end of DSD as you know it, will follow this trend. Especially with the continuing integration of AI. Spent 35 yrs with “what is now known,” as Mondelez. Best advice now is, listed in a recent post, but in addition, ride it out, ya can’t spend your time worrying about what you can’t control. There 7.3 million people out of work & many with BA & Master’s degrees. Taking over a year for folks to get a job, (in their field of degree) so many doing “grunt” work. Put in your 8 hours and go home and enjoy life…however, prepare yourselves to find something AI “can’t” take over….unfortunately, most is blue collar “labor” or “services.”

@px I’ve seen an SA get promoted to SR only to get laid off when company reduced SR count & reduced “SR routes,” (SR’s routes got bigger)in less than 3 months. It’s business as usual at the retail, store level, till the restructuring occurs. It’s happened at all levels, “hiring,” someone or promoting them, means nothing….

Use AI to answer your questions, you’ll be able to see a trend and at the moment they’re not looking to leave “DSD.” They are constantly using more “integrated sales” & “digitalization,” which means, the need for traditional field merchandisers may decrease. Instead of having people manually check shelves and write orders, the company might rely on digital data from Walmart's systems to determine when to ship more products.
What this means:
Digitalization: in the sales and supply chain context, this means using technology to replace manual processes and make data-driven decisions. For a company like Mondelez working with Walmart, this could look like:
· Data Analytics: Using software to analyze real-time sales data from Walmart stores to predict exactly how much Oreos or Ritz needs to be stocked on shelves, reducing waste (out-of-stocks or overstocks).
· Automation: Using AI to handle routine ordering or inventory tracking, which reduces the need for manual counts by staff.
· E-commerce Integration: Digitally managing product listings, pricing, and promotions across Walmart's website and app to ensure accuracy.
As AI becomes more integrated at the retail level, it will “thin out” (restructure)the retail sales force.
In short: any person, at any company, looking at a computer screen, AI is going to reduce these positions, even eliminate most. There is projections of 14 million job losses over the next decade if not sooner, hitting the “white collar,” positions now. Jobs AI won’t take over are, “coaching,” salons, restaurants(fine dinning one’s-not “fast food.”) cobbler, plumber, landscaping, notice a trend….if you’re a long ways from being able to retire, prepare yourself and find a job within AI & Data storage(prisons, military, law enforcement-note trend here too))or follow your passion and create your own job if you can.

Your comparing nabisco and Keebler? As far as products that's like comparing Frito and vintners lol, all this is a lot of talk just to get people excited which is fine if it floats your boat!

@1eg whether it happens now or in 5 years (and yes it’s been predicted for a while now), every change made is in the direction of an exit from dsd. Also, every change made makes the retail structure worse and worse.
At least now with them not paying overtime, it’s an acknowledgement that they won’t want to pay for all the overtime for the rtm role. Good luck there! Expect to have no life outside work!

We're not leaving DSD for at least another 5 years.
People have been calling for Mondelez DSD demise for at least 8 years now. It's getting old.

Will it happen? Yeah probably but in my opinion not for at least 5 to 7 years.

@p7 it’s very simple….territory managers will be utilized after they exit from dsd to be a segway. They will have huge territories and only very limited in store responsibility, mostly checking compliance.

@p7 where are full timers getting a raise , and explain more the promotion with hotel training, is this in New York

Why would they promote the sales representatives and give full time merchandisers a raise, as well as put them up in a hotel to train for the new territory manager position , only to exit DSD within the near future. It’s clear we are slowly existing DSD, but it doesn’t make sense to waste that kind of money if the end is truly that near.

Exiting DSD will happen market by market. I’m sure there’s already some Walmarts in the country that are warehouse.

@d5 that’s not new! We’ve seen that in the past, and all the PRD’s that ship from WM with our product too. They are leaving dsd, all retailers are exiting it before too long! With higher prices and smaller margins for stores, they want to eliminate dsd!

My keebler rep also mentioned she heard we were leaving Walmart. Not sure where they are getting this info from but hope it's true

Wal Mart is getting random cases of a Isco on their trucks now. So it is in the warehouse. Probably not the entire line but it is coming. As a retired rep, I hate to see it but it is the best way to go in today’s market. Just take a look at the Keebler displays.

@OP while I don’t believe this source, anyone who doesn’t see what’s coming is working hard to ignore reality. Retailer have been setting up as well as Mondelez, for this to occur! The new retail structure, come on now! They have scaled down and thinned out field workers and just eliminated RMS. How could that be of they were to continue with DSD?
They have space slotting spaces sitting empty at the retailers warehouses waiting for product so they can pull Mondelez from their own warehouses. Mondelez pays money for the space. Win win!
Can’t know for sure when, but it’s coming and it’s not too far off! Mondelez will leave a skeletal crew in the field to take pics to make sure things are executed and help with the transition. This plan has been in motion for many years! You can’t make this change overnight! Retail is evolving. If you ride it out till the end with Mondelez, don’t expect any big send off, you’ll be disappointed.
